Triggering Item Warranties in Maximo for Transportation

One of the questions I am most frequently asked is in regards to how item warranties are triggered.
In order to explain this, I think it best to start with an example.
Say you are in the mood for listening to some of your favorite tunes as you jog along the river bank. You head down to the local electronics store and pick out a stylin’ device with headphones that match your sneakers.
Now, as is expected in our society, you must pay for this item before you leave the store. Although the device has a warranty that will take effect once you complete the purchase and register the warranty, this original transaction to purchase the device is not a ‘warranty’ transaction. Meaning it is not a transaction to replace a failed device and you should not expect to be reimbursed for the cost.
Unfortunately, shortly into your next run, the device stops working. So you return to the store to exchange it for another device. You approach customer service, wait in line for hours, and explain the situation to the bemused clerk. As there is a record of you purchasing the failed device and it still has a valid warranty, this new transaction, to replace the failed device, is a ‘warranty’ transaction. Depending on the store, you may get an immediate reimbursement (the replacement device is no charge) or you may have to pay for the replacement device and submit a claim to receive reimbursement for the cost.
Maximo operates in much the same principle. Again, let’s use an example to explain.
In the Item Warranty Contracts application, you define a warranty for a water pump. Say six months in duration for water pump item number WP99HD.
Now, you open a work order for an asset and issue a WP99HD. Since there is a warranty contract for this item, a warranty registration takes place saying this item on this asset carries a warranty starting on the current date and expiring on the calculated expiration date (Maximo does this for you).
But, as there was no previous record of a registered warranty for this item for this asset, this is not a warranty transaction and you should not expect to be reimbursed for the cost.
A few months pass (but less than six) and the water pump fails. A new work order is opened for the asset and another item WP99HD is issued. Magic time! Now, as there is a registered warranty for this item on this asset and it is within the warranty period, this transaction is a warranty transaction. You are replacing a failed water pump that still has warranty and reimbursement is a possibility. Therefore this transaction will be flagged as a warranty situation by Maximo.
Oh, and as the replacement pump being issued has a warranty contract, a new warranty registration for this item on this asset will be done also.
