Do you follow the 3 second rule? You drop a fabulous piece of toast and you have 3 seconds to quickly pick it up from the floor and still eat it - before it becomes contaminated?
Do you also apply that same rule to metrics or reports? The information must be analyzed and understood within 3 seconds or the user discards it and moves on to the next task.
Quickly consuming BI data is a critical, increasing requirement of businesses today. Using the new Cognos BI Server products in Maximo 76 helps you in meeting the 3 second BI View.
One way to analyze massive amounts of data is to consolidate or categorize it. An example of this is time. Maximo stores date fields or attributes in the database in date/time formats - For example, April 6, 2015 7:00 AM.
To get a view of open PM work, users can export a query from Maximo's Work Order Tracking application and start to analyze the rows and rows of data. However, as the data is in specific date/time values, the user would being to sort this information, and apply manual groupings of the data into weeks, months or quarters.
This manual effort increases the amount of time the user spends transforming the data - along with increasing errors and frustration - before he can analyze it.
Utilizing Cognos Framework Manager (FM) and metadata, time dimensions can be directly applied to Maximo date/time attributes - so users do not have to transform data. They receive the data formatted in Year, Quarter, Month and/or Week time dimensions.
This enables quick views of data - for example Outstanding PM Workorders by Month . Immediate attention is drawn to the very large bar in the first quarter of 2015, - and immediate analytic questions come in to play - 'Why is this so much larger then Quarter 2? Why is this almost twice as high as the same quarter last year?'
To help you get started with the application of dimensions for your individual use cases, a detailed guide is now available taking you thru the step-by-step process to do this. The guide uses an example of applying Year, Quarter and Month time dimensions to Work Order attributes including Scheduled Start, Scheduled Finish, Actual Start and Actual Finish.
This work is done in Cognos FM, so it is intended for an administrator or developer who is very familiar with the Maximo database and has a base understanding of modeling techniques.
