LAFIXes should never be applied on a version that it was not intended to.

Technical Blog Post

Abstract

LAFIXes should never be applied on a version that it was not intended to.

Body

To better understand what the title mentions, let me explain some content.

FIXPACK
Fixpacks deliver product defect fixes that have undergone a full development release cycle and the most extensive QA testing of all maintenance releases.
Fixpacks are cumulative and each new fixpack contains all fixes from all previous fixpacks/interim fixes for that release.
An example of a Fixpack is :   Maximo 7.6.0.6 Feature Pack

INTERIM FIX (IFIX)
Interim Fixes go by many names like; Hotfix, Cumulative Hotfix, IFIX.  They all relate to the same type of deliverable and are releases on fixpack levels for critical and high priority issues. Interim Fixes are bug fixes only, they rarely if ever contain class structure or DB changes that would affect customizations.
An example of an Interim Fix is :  Maximo 7.6.0.6 Interim Fix 001

NOTE :  This Interim Fix should be applied ONLY on the current Maximo version that it was built for, in this case Maximo 7.6.0.6.  For example, an Interim Fix for Maximo 7.6.0.5 should never be applied over Maximo 7.6.0.6

LIMITED AVAILABILITY FIX (LA FIX)
The LAFIX is an unofficial mechanism to deliver emergency fixes for a specific bug or issues that cannot be delayed until the next regular maintenance delivery.
This means a single APAR fix delivered directly to a customer from Support.
An example of an LAFIX is :  LAFIX_APAR_IV92639_7.6.0.5_IFIX20161111

NOTE :  This LAFIX should be applied ONLY on the current Maximo version that it was built for, in this case Maximo 7.6.0.6.  For example, a LAFIX for Maximo 7.6.0.5 should never be applied over Maximo 7.6.0.6, even if the SAME APAR is happening on the newer version.

The correct procedure that you must take is to request a new Interim Fix or LAFIX against the new version where the same APAR is being experienced. (even if you have a LAFIX for that same APAR on your previous version)

We have seen a lot of issues caused by users re-applying LAFIXes from previous Maximo versions on their current Maximo versions. Please consider the information above.
