The objective of this post is to bring awareness of an important topic for the EAM community that is being heavily discussed on the organizations Engineering forums but not as much as it should on the Asset Management organizations IT departments when going for EAM IT vendors. For those following the standards for Asset Management industry know that PAS 55 and ISO 55000 are getting close to become a reality and so are you ready to certify or get your customer certified ? For those running their EAM processes in IBM Maximo the good news is... [More]
In Part II of the series of articles calculating dates, we
learned to use the Java Calendar and Date classes and methods. The question is:
The scenario is exactly the same as Part II, so I will not
go over the set up details again. Please review Part II if you need to
understand how scripting is exploited to calculate dates. To... [More]

The purpose of this article is to present a technical solution using Maximo Automated Scripting to the problem of plain text white space content via email appearing flattened in the SR ticket Rich Text Editor (RTE).
Before getting into the nitty-gritty details, it's important to mention that this is a single application of scripting to this type of problem. If the plain text is coming in... [More]
URLs are what we send to our friends whenever we're trying to share a YouTube video of a cat playing the piano . But URLs are more powerful in business contexts; launching a colleague to a specific bit of information can save lots of valuable time. To understand how to launch into Maximo and start an operation, you need to understand the format of URLs and landing events that Maximo supports. For example, you can send an email containing a link that takes your users to a
specific record within Maximo. Here's an example URL that will... [More]
A common issue when we are extending maximo objects using java classes is the absence of proper extension information in your product xml. This file tells not only which maximo objects we are extending but it can also be used to point maximo installation - updatedb - to the proper database change scripts (dbc) that will install your product. Usually, it is even common to ignore such xml when customizing maximo and, in place of it, make usage of Migration Manager to "install" your product objects, including structural changes in... [More]
Once in a while I'll get questions about performance problems. Specific scenarios can be resolved by applying Interim Fixes or adding indexes. Those critical and urgent problems often happen throughout the entire system.
Here is a collection of performance related recordings and technotes that might help:

Email! That word triggers both positive and negative
reactions as this year’s holiday season gets underway. On the one hand, we want
to be sure we receive those emails with special offers for holiday shopping. On
the other, we are annoyed when we get spammed. We wonder about the thousands of
emails routed daily through automated email systems.
Automated email systems supporting a business’ IT operations
are a different story altogether. Emails may be the quickest and cheapest
mechanism for users to alert IT teams of issues.... [More]

I've been working with the new Maximo 7.6 installer for a while now. Compared to the installer used with Maximo 7.1 and 7.5, it is a big improvement.
First, you have many fewer screens to go through. At most, you'll see 11 screens, instead of more than 25. Each screen provides field validation for your entries.
Second, before you install anything, you can review, validate and modify all of the entries, rather than waiting until everything has been entered and pressing that next button.
Third, there is additional... [More]
Ever wondered how Maximo executes automation scripts saved in the database? Read on.. Script code is written into the Source Code field of the
Automation Script application. Alternately, script code can be imported as the
Automation Script wizards are used to create new launch point and script. Once
the Automation Script wizards are completed or, the Save Script button of the
Automation Scripts application is clicked the contents of the field are
compiled, cached into memory and, finally, saved to the Maximo database.
Are you a virtual hoarder? TV Reality shows feature physical hoarders, and whether you view them with empathy or contempt, they highlight the impact of accumulating more items that a person can care for. Virtual hoarding is similar – where a person is unable to free themselves of files, pictures and emails. Over time, this can impact their ability to find the information they need, and depending on their unique environment, can have significant impact on storage space and costs. To combat this problem, many of us have IT departments which... [More]
Depending on how BIRT reports were developed, they may look fine on screen (HTML), but can be displayed in a different way when they are exported to or printed using PDF. A simple approach can be used so that BIRT reports will look the same on screen and when they print in PDF. This approach follows: 1) After a new report is created by clicking on File -> New -> Report, select all the report containers (table, grids, etc) and on their layout tab, select the Property Editor tab, Properties sub tab and the General option as per figure 1... This white paper p rovides tips for performance tuning of version 7.5.x of Tivoli's process automation engine, and supercedes the previous Best Practices for System Performance 7.x white paper if you are using IBM Tivoli service management products version 7.5.x. Note that if you are still using IBM Tivoli service management products version 7.1 or 7.2, you should continue to utilize the white paper for those versions of products which is located here . We... A few days ago Pam Denny and I had a discussion on whether any aspects of reporting could be automated through automation scripts. I had heard similar questions from clients at a previous Pulse event and I was quite intrigued by the possibilities. The user need was very clear though: can the end user avoid having to click through a number of steps to configure report execution and instead of the system execute the report in a pre-configured way? Such an approach should not require Java customization.
I spent some time reviewing the... [More]
