Have you ever encountered or built
a cairn ? Cairns
are stacks or formations of rocks that you can often see on hiking trails or
parks. Some believe they are used as
trail markers, while others state they are artistic monuments celebrating
nature. I saw a number of cairns while taking a break from teaching a course in Arizona last week, and added
my own interpretation while heading back from Squaw Peak Trail.
As I thought about this week’s
blog – I couldn’t help but think back to those really cool cairns and how they... [More]
I found $1.36 in my pocket this weekend. After experiencing mixed emotions of where did this come from and why don’t I remember to take money out of my pocket – I settled on the thrill of finding something unexpected as I detailed here last year. You also may find something unexpected in Maximo with the Report Update utilities. These utilities were introduced in June 2010, and have been enhanced in the Maximo 220.127.116.11 release . In this release, there are now two report update utilities available for Page Break and Auto Layout. Both... [More]
When a PMR is submitted by the customer to the IBM support team, it usually comes with a scenario description that the IBM support professional can use to try to reproduce the issue in an internal environment. This same scenario can be used to create an automation script (in this case, in IBM Rational Functional Tester or Google Selenium, which has a framework tuned to work with Maximo, developed by Maximo development team) that will be used to test the hotfix when it is installed in a non-production environment for validation purposes (IBM... Compatible unit estimating (CUE) is a fundamental component in a utility transmission and distribution work management process. You use compatible unit estimates to calculate the cost of work, determine the labor hours and the bill of materials needed to perform an specific or a work package. Today I'd like to share with you a wiki document that shows a step by step information about how the Compatible Unit Estimation process works. Since it's a complex process that reuse most of the Maximo data (inventory, crew, assets, tools, services ... )... [More]
On June 10, 2011, a new report option has been made available for Maximo 6 clients in the version 6.2.8 release. This option extends our current suite of reporting tools to enable the user of BIRT reporting thru a Maximo version 7 instance. This new integration is called Version 7 Report Integration, or V7RI.
The V7RI integration utilizes the ERI, External Report Integration to integrate your existing Maximo 6 environment to a version 7 Environment, which is configured for reporting only.
To enable this... [More]
Today I want to tell everyone about the new Maximo Mobile
Cookbook for Customizations. When I say cookbook, I mean a document that
provides the ‘recipes’ or instructions, for building some of the most common
modifications to the Maximo Mobile applications.
Have you ever wanted to add a few extra fields to one of the
screens in Maximo Mobile? How do you change the color of the high priority work
orders in your work list? Maybe you want to change the validation rules for a
certain field or enable a table window to support bar... [More]
MORE Maximo BI Pack Content!
Supplementing the existing Work Order Management and metric reports, the Maximo BI Packs have been further enhanced with the new Asset Management and Asset Failure workspaces and reports.
The critical assets in your business often define the health of your operation. These assets may be vital to production processes, reliability of your operation, or safety processes. If these assets are not properly maintained, your business processes may be severely... [More]
When faced with choices , I often try to remember the food pyramid when deciding between a decadent red velvet cookie and a crunchy Kale chip. Consume large quantities of green leafy vegetables, and small quantities of delicious sugary treats the pyramid reminds me – while my stomach violently disagrees. Likewise, a pyramid is key to understanding Maximo report users. When we talk about Maximo users in terms of reporting and data analysis – we put them in the five categories shown here. These categories are based on the user’s job... [More]
Asset Configuration Manager (ACM) is designed to manage the
configuration management requirements of complex assets operating in
the aerospace, defence and rail sectors where safety and regulatory
compliance is of primary importance. One
of the central components of Maximo ACM is the Build
Data Interpreter (BDI). At
it's most basic level the BDI analyses configuration managed Assets
position by position to ensure that they comply with the
configuration rules established in the corresponding model. That
said the BDI is a pretty... [More]
The database is central to the functionality of IBM Tivoli service management products. It stores all data that is collected and calculated by the applications. This database also stores metadata for configuring and maintaining the environment. Reporting also generates resource-intensive management reports. Because all functionality is based on database performance, the database can be a key focus for performance tuning. SQL query tuning and creating indexes against a database can help to obtain maximum performance from IBM Tivoli service... [More]
Providing logging up front is MustGather for troubleshooting in general and this entry provides the MustGather for troubleshooting email communications in particular. This includes whether the problem is server communication, outgoing, incoming, formatted, non-formatted, or template related. Websphere is assumed otherwise consult your application server's documentation. 1) Be generous with application server log rotation: In the Websphere administrative console this can be adjusted under Logging and Tracing > Server Name > JVM Logs ... When you plan to use application server security to authenticate TPAE/Maximo users against an external directory you also have the option to synchronize users and/or groups and group memberships. There are a few decisions you need to make before you begin. Who will be synchronized? You can use a standard LDAP filter to synchronize a subset of users into the system. These users can be in a pre-defined OU, role or group or can simply meet a standard query. Synchronizing a subset of users will improve the performance of the sync and also improve... [More]
My relationship with my alarm clock is complex. Like my love-hate relationship with our office printer, I have implemented a system to smooth the abruptness of our interactions. The actual time on the alarm is set to a time that I would like to see when I wake up – not the actual time. This false alarm clock time has been derived over years and years of wake ups, and is not a simple value of 1 or 2 hours ahead. However, when its loud alarm this morning caused me to go thru the multiple mathematical calculations to derive the actual... [More]
As companies are becoming more security-aware they are conducting security audits of their key applications and looking for ways to ‘harden’ their implementations. Maximo and other TPAE based products are scanned using IBM's Rational AppScan tools to identify and remediate known security vulnerabilities. There are many suggested configurations to make an implementation more secure. Deploy your system over SSL. Most security auditing tools will alert if information, especially user session information, is sent over a network and not encrypted.... [More]
