Have you ever wondered how the translations in Maximo work ? If your answer is no, you are probably reading the wrong blog and you may want to work more on searching techniques If however the answer is yes, then please read on and I will hopefully unravel some of the mystery for you.
Maximo translations for the numerous languages available are provided if XLIFF files. A program called TDToolkit processes the files and creates tables and table... [More]
Security is more important than ever, and securing applications is a priority to every company. Many clients ask for documentation on configuring Maximo for LDAP authentication. You end up having to review many different articles to address a single topic, so I've decided to lay out a basic LDAP configuration using WebSphere 7 and Maximo 22.214.171.124. This will walk through connecting WebSphere to your domain right down to the synchronization process and hopefully give a more clear understanding of the configuration process. For the purpose of... Today I'd like to ask the question "just because you can do something, should you"? Just because you CAN ride a unicycle across a tightrope
that connects two skyscrapers do you really need to? I mean like why jump out of a perfectly good airplane just because we have parachutes? I mean sure they both sound like great ideas but then again maybe not. I guess it's just me but just because you CAN do something it doesn't mean you always should.
Earlier in the week I was talking with one of... [More]

Ok, you are a Maximo user, right? So, it is very likely that this dreadful message has popped up on your screen before immediately triggering a desperate reaction from you.

Yes we can, and here's where we keep the answers...
IBM Knowledge Center
Sometimes you might have a question that you think is pertaining to basic product functionality, but you don't want to go through the process of entering a PMR and then waiting to ask one of our support engineers directly, through that channel. There is a faster way to get many of the answers to these... [More]
It's been a awhile since I've written my last blog, now that the new year is here, and the holidays are over it's time to get back to some knowledge sharing.
As many of you now know, Maximo 7.6 has been released. If you haven't seen the install please head on over to my colleagues series of blogs: Installing Maximo 7.6: A first look . Once you have Maximo 7.6 installed you may be wondering where all the 7.6 industry solutions are.
Although we are running Maximo 7.6, many of the 7.5 Industry... [More]
If you are a Maximo user or a Start Center manager, you probably already created a Result Set portlet on your screen.
You must have also felt a need to add columns from other tables/objects to that portlet.
If so, you probably faced this technote:
On Result Set Portlet in Maximo 7x, Adding a Dot Notation/Joined Attribute
YES, now it is working perfectly.
BUT WAIT... Something is missing here!
I cannot filter/sort the dot notation column!!!
We have different technical references on Maximo Logging already published. In this post, I would like to share the following simplified procedure that we can use to create a log to troubleshoot the most of common application problems we may have.
Please keep in mind that depending on the problem, logs configured with other settings might be necessary. In addition, please consider:
- If the problem scenario is replicable in the Maximo Test environment, generate the Maximo log in the Test environment in order to avoid any impact in... [More]
How many times, have you been faced with a problem and you didn't even know where to start or what to do about it? If you've been in this situation before how did you work through it and find a solution? What kinds techniques did you use to get on track and how successful were they?
When it comes to my job and what I do in supporting the products (Maximo to be exact) that I do, I generally feel pretty confident going into pretty much any situation no matter how difficult it may seem on the surface. I'm sure... [More]

A tale of a hero - IBM Support Assistant ( ISA ) Team Server 5 and his sidekick (that would be me)
and of a villain - RC=13
It all started one wet and miserable morning in a small dark room in a place not so very far away. Disaster had struck as my server had just run out of memory. What could I do. Where could I turn. I had heard tales of a... [More]
A few days ago one of our L2 engineers sent me a message via Sametime, asking if he can share something with me. Next thing I see on my screen is a big photo – showing 3 tired, but very happy looking people. I wondered what this was all about!
Our engineer then forwarded a note with big THANK YOU for the exceptional support provided by our team. He explained that our client sent the ‘selfie’ to us along with the thank you note.
I have to give a big thank you back to our client -... [More]

Are you a business partner who implements Maximo and is looking for ways to differentiate your services? Are you a customer thinking about implementing Maximo and you want to get to fast ROI? Does 60 minutes seem ridiculous? A couple of years ago you would have been right. It was ridiculous to think you could have the most powerful asset management platform software running with industry best practices and your data in an hour. Today, it’s possible.
OK, let’s be real. Will... [More]
As we begin this new year we look forward to new challenges that will impact how people like myself do our jobs. I'm also looking forward to meeting and talking with clients once again at the Interconnect conference next month in Las Vegas. Interconnect (formally referred to as Pulse) will be an opportunity for clients and users to look at and demo many of the new products that will be available to them in 2015. One of the things I'm really looking forward to in 2015 is the Maximo 7.6 release. For someone... [More]
MxLoader is a great tool and allows to perform massive updates in Maximo in few seconds. Updating attributes can be a little tricky so here is a little tutorial on how to do it.
First of all you have to download MxLoader and familiarize with it if you do not already know it. The User Guide has a nice introduction on how to use it.
When MxLoader is corretly working and connected to your Maximo server you can click on the 'New MxSheet' button and select the 'Assets - Asset Classification and Attributes'... [More]
Recently I encountered a Maximo user who requested for a report parameter lookup to be added to a BIRT Report request page. Not just any parameter, but an unbound Location(s) parameter lookup that was to only show and display records subject to the Location being specified on the request page. Upon initial setup of the Table Domain and simple lookups.xml modification, the goal was partially reached but the lookup was returning ALL locations and not those subject to the Table Domain.
Within our Report Development Guide(s) (... [More]
Any customer with a large database has run into the famous preset limit of 5000 was exceeded error message. There are a few ways around this message, increasing the size of the fetch stop limit. This workaround will not always work as it is a global setting and who wants large result sets across all applications for all users. Another option is to decrease the size of the result set itself by adding further information to filter information as needed. Good option but it we don't always have the option to filter out information into... [More]
I've been working an issue with a colleague recently regarding Change Polling with the VMMSYNC cron task. When using Tivoli Directory Server there is a key step that is missing in current documentation that isn't needed with Active Directory, missing this step will prevent Change Polling from working. Before I go into the the missing piece regarding Tivoli Directory Server, I will explain a bit more what Change Polling does.
In Maximo 126.96.36.199 change polling functionality was implemented. When enabled change polling allows the... [More]
Recently I have had a few people ask me how Maximo security works when users belong to multiple security groups with different conditions on each of the security groups.
To start I would like to go over some of the fundamentals of how Maximo decides what applications and options a user is allowed to access once they are logged into the product. What the user sees is determined by the security groups they belong to and how the security rights from each group combine to give the user a security profile.
Since the 7.1 release when Maximo began integrating with Cognos, I've resolved several PMRs. Many of these were similar issues, but one of the primary concerns was locating relevant error messages and which log files to locate those errors in.
For 'Part 1' of this blog, I will cover the common log files that should be reviewed when investigating issues with the Maximo/Cognos integration and submitting PMRs to Support.
Cognos Log File Locations :
The Cognos log files that will need to be checked when... [More]
