Recently I encountered a Maximo user who requested for a report parameter lookup to be added to a BIRT Report request page. Not just any parameter, but an unbound Location(s) parameter lookup that was to only show and display records subject to the Location being specified on the request page. Upon initial setup of the Table Domain and simple lookups.xml modification, the goal was partially reached but the lookup was returning ALL locations and not those subject to the Table Domain.
Within our Report Development Guide(s) (... [More]
Any customer with a large database has run into the famous preset limit of 5000 was exceeded error message. There are a few ways around this message, increasing the size of the fetch stop limit. This workaround will not always work as it is a global setting and who wants large result sets across all applications for all users. Another option is to decrease the size of the result set itself by adding further information to filter information as needed. Good option but it we don't always have the option to filter out information into... [More]
I've been working an issue with a colleague recently regarding Change Polling with the VMMSYNC cron task. When using Tivoli Directory Server there is a key step that is missing in current documentation that isn't needed with Active Directory, missing this step will prevent Change Polling from working. Before I go into the the missing piece regarding Tivoli Directory Server, I will explain a bit more what Change Polling does.
In Maximo 220.127.116.11 change polling functionality was implemented. When enabled change polling allows the... [More]
Recently I have had a few people ask me how Maximo security works when users belong to multiple security groups with different conditions on each of the security groups.
To start I would like to go over some of the fundamentals of how Maximo decides what applications and options a user is allowed to access once they are logged into the product. What the user sees is determined by the security groups they belong to and how the security rights from each group combine to give the user a security profile.
Since the 7.1 release when Maximo began integrating with Cognos, I've resolved several PMRs. Many of these were similar issues, but one of the primary concerns was locating relevant error messages and which log files to locate those errors in.
For 'Part 1' of this blog, I will cover the common log files that should be reviewed when investigating issues with the Maximo/Cognos integration and submitting PMRs to Support.
Cognos Log File Locations :
The Cognos log files that will need to be checked when... [More]

I've been working with Maximo customers in a support capacity for a number of years now, but I haven't lost my ear for detecting that delicate blend of mild frustration and proactive curiosity in a client's voice when he or she asks me about various features and functionalities of Maximo that the client is not yet aware of, or familiar with yet. It is in these moments when I realize that my existence here at IBM is on a metaphysical plane of great integrity. Is that too much... [More]
Hi again! It's been a little while since my last entry so I thought I'd get back to it today with a three part series on one of my favorite Maximo topics and that's Linear Assets. In the first installment of the series we'll take a look at what linear assets are, in the second installment we'll look at a use case and then in the final installment we'll look at some of various industries that linear assets might be useful for.
Linear Assets is an add-on component to core Maximo that extends asset... [More]
Last year, we met with a number of customers across different industries to discuss your needs for the readme file that accompanies the Maximo Asset Management 7.5 fix packs.
You told us that you'd like to be able to retrieve information more easily, that you'd like more information on behavior changes, you'd also like security items highlighted, and generally that you'd like us to reduce the time that you need to spend testing a fix pack before you roll it into a production environment.
We've taken your... [More]
I gave a presentation on IBM Installation Manager a couple of days ago. We recently released an Interim Release Fix for both Maximo (version 18.104.22.168 and later only) and SmartCloud Control Desk (version 22.214.171.124 and later only)
This release includes WebSphere 8.5.5. (See the Tivoli Process Automation Engine Product Coexistence Matrix 7.5.x . for product versions supported on WebSphere 8.5.5). WAS 8.5.5 is installed with IBM Installation Manager, which is different than any of our other installers (we use... [More]
My car is about 4 years old and in need of serious
cleaning. With two young kids starting a
new school year, new activities and monsoon season apparently beginning in my
area, I haven’t had an opportunity to give the “family truckster” a good shine. This weekend was the perfect opportunity, so
I seized the moment and started by cleaning out the inside. As I started to clean the third row I bumped
a small button next to the seat and to my surprise out popped a cup
holder. As I said earlier I’ve owned
this car for 4 years and was... [More]
Are you having issues trying to associate multiple applications in the Go To detail menu of a specific field ?
This could be happening because of a syntax issue for when multiple application names are used in the applink property of a field.
In Application Designer, you have the option to add an application in the Go To detail button from a field, but the question here would be : Is it possible to have multiple applications in that particular Go To menu from the details button?
The answer is YES, however you... [More]
I've been working with the new Maximo 7.6 installer for a while now. Compared to the installer used with Maximo 7.1 and 7.5, it is a big improvement.
First, you have many fewer screens to go through. At most, you'll see 11 screens, instead of more than 25. Each screen provides field validation for your entries.
Second, before you install anything, you can review, validate and modify all of the entries, rather than waiting until everything has been entered and pressing that next button.
Third, there is additional... [More]
I'm back again, changing things up a bit this week from the usual LDAP blog. Today we are going to talk about clustering and go into a detail step by step guide to configuring WebSphere 8.5.5 in a horizontal cluster. Unlike a vertical cluster which is built up on the same server, a horizontal cluster spans multiple servers/nodes to allow for another layer of fail over.
Clustering is appropriate for implementations with a large user load, as you add more users you may need to add additional JVM's to either the existing nodes... [More]
MxLoader is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that allows to quickly and easily query and load data into IBM Maximo, IBM SmartCloud Control Desk (SCCD) and other TPAE based applications.
In this article I will show how simple it is to load data into Maximo from an Excel sheet using MxLoader. First of all, download MxLoader from the developerWorks community . To have a quick overview of the tool I suggest you to watch this 4 minutes video .
When you open MxLoader you are typically prompted... [More]
When using VMMSYNC to synchronize user and person records, out of the box you are limited to the attributes that exist as part of the PersonAccount Entity in WebSphere and what exists in the User and Group mappings on the Crontask. This doesn't always fulfill the requirements of the end user who needs to bring more information in from other attributes that exist on a user record in the Active Directory domain. In this post I will outline the process of adding a field to Maximo and then synchronizing data from the directory server into... [More]
