Conditional UI is a powerful tool that can change the behavior of your user interfaces based on the state of the current record or the role of an individual user. See the Application Configuration Best Practices page for more details on what Conditional UI can do for your users.
To implement some conditional user interface use cases, Maximo 7.x allows you to conditionally change the property values of your widgets. This is controlled in the Application Designer application by launching the “Configure Conditional... [More]
Do you need a quick way to determine what customizations you’ve made to your Maximo Asset Management 7.5 installation?
If so, check out the Customization Detection tool. The tool currently works on Maximo Asset Management Version 188.8.131.52 and higher. The tool provides information about customizations for business objects, field classes, and services that were customized (extended/added) for the out-of-the-box system. It does not provide information about UI bean classes or other configuration changes.

Stuart Bowden (IBM UK) and Sampath Sriramadhesikan (IBM US) contributed to this article.
APAR IZ88552 brought about some functionality in Maximo to handle email with a content type of 'message' (i.e. RFC 822 content). Two-and-a-half years later is not too late to clarify what this feature entails.
Maximo, nor the JavaMail API, are capable of encoding or decoding proprietary message formats. The Outlook message format is a proprietary binary encoded format.

I need to set limits when faced with these. Knows as Fluffernutters, smooth, decadent peanut butter and sticky marshmallow topping on plain white bread form the ultimate comfort sandwich. With a cold glass of milk, the number I can toss down is crazy high.
You may also need to stop your users from over-indulging by setting records limits when they create Ad Hoc or QBR (Query Based Reports.) The creation process of ad hoc reporting is where users select the fields, application query,... [More]
Recently, I encountered a use case of crossover domain that worth blogging about.
The concept of crossover domain is simple. It is a way to trigger something to happen when an attribute is being populated. That something is to copy one or more attributes from a related object to the current object that is involved in the operation at this moment. For example, you want to “crossover” the item’s description when you are putting the item on the purchase order that you are creating.

I have an unwarranted fear of bridges. I attacked this fear head-on last week and forced myself to walk over a beautiful bridge in Portland, Oregon while attending the stellar MUWG conference. My legs were unsteady and my mind continually meandered to the rust surrounding me – but I eventually claimed victory on the other side of the Williamette River.
To minimize your meandering while looking for Maximo Report documentation, a new, downloadable spreadsheet has... [More]
Even though in the out-of-the-box configuration, the LONGDESCRIPTION table and its LDTEXT field are audit enabled, it does not mean all objects’ Long Description fields are audit enabled. For audit records to be generated for a specific object’s Long Description field, you need to set the object as well as its DESCRIPTION_LONGDESCRIPTION field to audit-enabled.
For example, if you'd like to audit the ASSET table's Long Description field, these steps need to... [More]
When following the current Best Practices for Performance white paper, one of the Generic JVM arguments that is recommended is to set the -Xdisableexplicitgc parameter. Setting this parameter turns a System.gc() call into a no-op.
This parameter works well for the vast majority of our clients. However, there have been a few cases where JVM memory is fairly tight due to the specific workloads that the end users are generating. In some cases, requests for object memory grow faster than the Java virtual machines decides to... [More]
Configuration Managed (CM) assets are different from other product assets because they can be composed of other assets or components defined within a hierarchy that have associated CM rules. Thus, CM assets are also called complex assets and they are built based on its corresponding model.

I was fired from my first job. I was 16 years old, working as a busboy for a busy restaurant in Buffalo when my boss told me to refill the ice in the salad bar. As I carried a large bucket filled with ice past the busy dinner crowd, I suddenly lost my grip. As the ice chips settled everywhere – in plates of hot lasagna, bread baskets and under the feet of waitresses - my boss icely told me to grab a mop and then head home.
While I quickly learned that moving ice was not a viable career option for... [More]
The Nightmare of Accidentally Closed Work Orders
How do I stop my users from accidentally closing their work orders?
I had a user who accidentally closed 350 work orders, what should I do?
How can I un-close a work order?
I get these kinds of questions all the time. The problem here is closed work orders are closed. We have a closed status for a reason. Its meant to say this work order is done and I don’t want anyone making any more changes to it. But what about human error? People... [More]

One of Jakob Nielsen’s top ten rules for usability is: Minimize the user's memory load by making objects, actions, and options visible. The user should not have to remember information from one part of the dialogue to another. Sometimes adding an additional field or section into an application can greatly improve the efficiency of your end users. You can add fields or sections to an existing user interface through configuration by using the Application Designer. Here’s a tutorial on adding a simple field into the user interface that was posted... [More]

You can create screencasts (also known as viewlets) of Maximo to help your employees learn more about the product or to help them understand and complete complex tasks. Often, a company customizes Maximo and screencasts are a good way of providing company-specific information to your employees that is not available in Information Centers or other IBM platforms. A screencast is basically a recording of the computer screen, which can be produced and edited to create video demonstrations. Used correctly, screencasts can be an engaging and... [More]

What exactly is consist management?
In the rail industry, a group of assets (cars, locomotives,
etc.) that are coupled together to form a train are often referred to as a
Consist. This may also be referred to as
a Train Set.
The process of assembling a collection of individual assets
into a train set or consist is referred to Consist Management.
What this means in terms of a Maximo process is defining the
