With the added security features and functions available in TPAE/Maximo version 7 configuring your security to work just the way you want it can be extremely complex and time consuming. Once you get it configured in dev/test you then need to move it to production – you don’t want to start from scratch. Fortunately, Migration Manager comes with some pre-defined object structures and a migration group to facilitate this. There are some important considerations to help you be successful. The APPSECURITY Migration Group is dependent on other... [More]
At our PULSE conference we had a lot of interest in the Maximo Archiving with Optim product. One of the most common questions that we were asked was about how you could interact with archived data. Depending on your business requirements there are different ways that your user can interact with archived data. You can use one or more of these methodologies as they meet your business needs. ‘Just in Case’ Access – In this case the data will remain in the archive files and stored on lower-tier storage or even off site. This would be... [More]
As companies are becoming more security-aware they are conducting security audits of their key applications and looking for ways to ‘harden’ their implementations. Maximo and other TPAE based products are scanned using IBM's Rational AppScan tools to identify and remediate known security vulnerabilities. There are many suggested configurations to make an implementation more secure. Deploy your system over SSL. Most security auditing tools will alert if information, especially user session information, is sent over a network and not encrypted.... [More]
Maximo and other ISM applications can be licensed in different ways and measuring license compliance can get confusing. IBM does not 'lock out' users when licenses are exceeded but we do perform occasional audits. There are a few tools within the system that you can use to self-monitor your license compliance. If you are licensed by registered users, User Types will be important. Out of the box we ship Type 1 through Type 10 as values in a standard domain. You can add more values and descriptions at they meet your business needs. For example,... [More]
Within the Maximo and Version 7 product lines, there are numerous ways you can analyze your data. As a Balderdash lover and an IBMer immersed daily in a sea of acronyms, these data options are listed below in increasing range of data analysis capability. QBE – Query By Example. Using your application’s filter and/or query, you can immediately download your results for additional analysis in Microsoft Excel. KPI - Key Performance Indicators. Visual indicators displaying status against predefined targets. RS – Result Sets. ... [More]
QBE (Query by Example) is an excellent way for you to quickly take the results of your application query and/or filters and export them to Microsoft Excel. You can then view each of the list tab fields, and perform additional analysis, combine the data with other queries, print, or save. However, often users want to see additional fields in the exported data. And the fields that one user may want to see are not the same as fields another user may want to see. You can modify the list of fields that displays with the Application Designer. ... [More]
How many custom reports do you have? Do you have 25, 50 – or is your number in the
range of 100 to 250 custom reports? Or
are you in the category where you don’t know how many custom reports you have
because your users are creating their own uncontrolled reports in tools like
The topic of custom reports leads to a myriad of questions
- Is each custom

a custom report is approved, and then developed?
- Should super users be given database and... [More]
When you plan to use application server security to authenticate TPAE/Maximo users against an external directory you also have the option to synchronize users and/or groups and group memberships. There are a few decisions you need to make before you begin. Who will be synchronized? You can use a standard LDAP filter to synchronize a subset of users into the system. These users can be in a pre-defined OU, role or group or can simply meet a standard query. Synchronizing a subset of users will improve the performance of the sync and also improve... [More]
As the building blocks to Version 7’s Ad hoc reporting tool,
QBR (Query Based Reporting), Report Object Structures (ROS) enable you to select fields
from multiple categories (objects) for your ad hoc reports. Additionally, ROS enable you to visualize application
categories and their parent/child relationships. These categories are displayed via a category
tree drilldown in the Select Tab of the QBR window in the top left hand
Depending on the products you are licensed for, you will
receive over 20 ROS out of the box.... [More]
Hi, I am very
happy to be here on Service Management Connect, once again blogging about Asset
like to talk about a very interesting and useful accelerator we recently posted
to the ISM Library. The accelerator is
called “Maximo for E-mail.”
me briefly describe the ISM Library for those who may not be familiar with
it. IBM recently enhanced OPAL and
changed its name to the Integrated Service Management (ISM) Library. It is a rich and diverse repository for
information and... [More]
The previous BiLog entry discussed
the key items to consider when defining maxrelationships in your ROS.
One of its major components is c ardinality, which is used to define
the type of the database relationship.
In the case of reporting, there are two types: One-to-one (1:1) or single relationships, or One-to-many
(1:N) or Multiple Relationships.
To highlight the differences in cardinality, let’s use an
example from the Purchase Requisition application.
The relationship between a Purchase
Requisition and a Company... [More]

If you are an IBM client, business partner, consultant, or even a IBM Maximo developer you should be following the Maximo Development Best Practices when customizing Maximo Business Objects (MBO's). As a Maximo developer and Lab Advocate, I have dealt with many clients who have extended Maximo business objects and have made their own customizations. When extending the MBO's you should be aware that if done incorrectly, it could lead your end users to experience poor performance, out of memory errors and/or system crashes amongst... [More]
Coming in on a Monday morning after a great Red Sox win over
the Yankees last night…I can’t help wonder what is the biggest team win you’re
recently experienced. Was it the 2004
Red Sox World Series Championship? Or maybe a political lobby you have been
involved with for something like the approvals of Wind Turbines? Or maybe something simpler like your child’s music,
baseball, or lacrosse team win this weekend?
One of the biggest team wins I’ve recently been involved
with is with the release of our latest software, Maximo... [More]
In the last couple of Maximo releases, the Integration
Framework has been evolving to provide an improved user experience that will
assist you with the challenges involved with external system integration. For those of you who are not familiar with the Integration
Framework take a look at Maximo 7.5 info center for additional information on
how it enables Maximo to integrate data with other applications http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v49r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.mbs.doc/gp_intfrmwk/c_if_overview.html
Did you know that Auto-Locate hierarchy has been enhanced in Maximo Spatial 7.5. The text below describes the order and hierarchy of processing data in Maximo records that can possible generate a map position. The objective is simple. There is not always a direct link between the Maximo and GIS feature record. So rather than not display something in the map, try to find some information in the record that has a direct link to an object in the map or that can be geocoded using an address or GPS coordinates. This ultimately results in a better... [More]
…the tools that give us the power
of change. From the Faber Castell Eraser
that lets us fix the mistake on our college math test, the whiteout we use to
correct information on a form or the magical F2 and backspace keys that let us
fix our occasionally turbulent keystrokes.
Sadly, some things in life can’t
be edited. We can’t go back 25 years
ago to 1986 with our eraser and correct Bill Buckner’s fielding error with the
Red Sox that cost them the World Series, or buy oodles of Microsoft Stock when
it went public at... [More]
Throughout the last few BiLog’s
we’ve been introducing you to the new report features in the recently released
7.5 product – while keeping you immersed in acronyms, Boston Red Sox Trivia and
other amazing facts on erasers and how long it took to build Rome .
And while you may expect a trend
here to continue, let me take a slight detour
and introduce a new backronym, RTF. If
you’re not familiar with backronyms, it is where you have an acronym – and then
find the words to form one. So – while you
would expect RTF in this... [More]
One of the questions I am most
frequently asked is in regards to how item warranties are triggered.
In order to explain this, I
think it best to start with an example.
Say you are in the mood for
listening to some of your favorite tunes as you jog along the river bank. You head down to the local electronics store
and pick out a stylin’ device with headphones that match your sneakers.
Now, as is expected in our
society, you must pay for this item before you leave the store. Although the device has a... [More]
Have you ever encountered or built
a cairn ? Cairns
are stacks or formations of rocks that you can often see on hiking trails or
parks. Some believe they are used as
trail markers, while others state they are artistic monuments celebrating
nature. I saw a number of cairns while taking a break from teaching a course in Arizona last week, and added
my own interpretation while heading back from Squaw Peak Trail.
As I thought about this week’s
blog – I couldn’t help but think back to those really cool cairns and how they... [More]

Today I want to tell everyone about the new Maximo Mobile
Cookbook for Customizations. When I say cookbook, I mean a document that
provides the ‘recipes’ or instructions, for building some of the most common
modifications to the Maximo Mobile applications.
Have you ever wanted to add a few extra fields to one of the
screens in Maximo Mobile? How do you change the color of the high priority work
orders in your work list? Maybe you want to change the validation rules for a
certain field or enable a table window to support bar... [More]
On June 10, 2011, a new report option has been made available for Maximo 6 clients in the version 6.2.8 release. This option extends our current suite of reporting tools to enable the user of BIRT reporting thru a Maximo version 7 instance. This new integration is called Version 7 Report Integration, or V7RI.
The V7RI integration utilizes the ERI, External Report Integration to integrate your existing Maximo 6 environment to a version 7 Environment, which is configured for reporting only.

People often ask me about Linear Asset Manager. Not
what it does - but why the product was developed in the first place.
Here's the story...
In May 2005, Don Beahm, who was the lead product manager for
Maximo Transportation, and who now works for Accenture, stood before me and
drew a line on the whiteboard. "This
is a linear asset," he said. "It is not a pump, and Maximo should not
treat it like a pump." He went on to explain that linear assets have
characteristics that change over distance. On... [More]
