This blog explains the sequential steps that are required to migrate IBM Business Process Manager Standard Version 7.5.x to 8.5 using an existing database. As you might be aware, migration can be very complex and time consuming. Thus, it is very important to follow the steps in sequence to avoid potential issues. I hope this post helps you to avoid pitfalls and successfully migrate your IBM Business Process Manager environment. It focuses on migrating an IBM Business Process Manager Standard remote messaging, remote support deployment pattern process server.
IBM Business Process Manager Standard V7.5.1 is installed on the source machine
IBM Business Process Manager Standard V8.5 is installed on the target machine
When you migrate to IBM Business Process Manager Standard V8.5, you can reuse existing schema or create new schema. In this exercise, we are re-using the existing schema for IBM Business Process Manager Standard V8.5
Review the IBM Business Process Manager Standard detailed system requirements to verify that your target environment meets the required hardware, operating systems, and database prerequisites.
If you have customized your existing databases, such as creating or dropping indexes or constraints, remove all of these customizations before you begin the migration process.
Some authentication aliases have been removed from IBM Business Process Manager V8.5.
Before you migrate, verify that the default users and authentication aliases are removed from IBM Business Process Manager V8.5. If your applications are using aliases that have been removed, you must re-create them manually in the target environment after migration. If your applications rely on a specific WebSphere Application Server configuration, the applications might fail to start or fail to work correctly in V8.5 unless you re-create any required resources.
Check for dependencies in the following areas:
- Data sources
- Java Message Service (JMS) configurations
- Environment variables
- Shared library configurations
- Work Manager
You might need to re-create these resources manually in the target environment after migration.
Ensure that the source environment is running correctly. Before starting the migration process, ensure that all of the Java virtual machines (JVMs) in the source system start without errors by checking the SystemOut.log files of the deployment manager, node agents, application server clusters, and non-clustered servers. Resolve issues if any occur.
On a system that has Version 8.5 installed and the same operating system as the source environment, create a remote migration utility by using the BPMCreateRemoteMigrationUtilities command from the target_install_root/bin directory.
After you have run the BPMCreateRemoteMigrationUtilities command, check the generated remoteMigrationUtilities.zip file and verify that it contains the following folders: bin, BPM, java, lib, plugins, util
The bin folder should contain BPMExtractDBConfiguration.bat, BPMExtractSourceInformation.bat, and BPMManageApplications.bat
Note: The location of the remoteMigrationUtilities.zip file is displayed when you run the BPMCreateRemoteMigrationUtilities command. If you specify only the file name and not the full path name, the remoteMigrationUtilities.zip file is in the BPM_home\util\migration\scripts directory.
Copy the remote migration utility image from the target system to the source system. Then, extract the remote migration utilities into their own unique directory on the source system.
Run the BPMExtractDBConfiguration utility to extract the data source information, such as host name and database type, from your source environment.
Update the migration.properties file with the configuration information for the source environment; the file is found in the remote_migration_utility\util\migration\resources\ directory.
Run remote_migration_utility\bin\BPMExtractDBConfiguration.bat -output c:\DBconfiguration\DBConfig.properties -propertiesFile remote_migration_utility\util\migration\resources\migration.properties
- Update the migration.properties file with the configuration information for the source environment; the file is found in the remote_migration_utility\util\migration\resources\ directory.
- Configure IBM Business Process Manager Standard V8.5 on the target system, as described in this product documentation.
