Hello! This is the first part of a series that will give an introduction to using the AndEngine and will try to show you all of its features. This is a brief introduction, with an instalation guide.
What is it?
The AndEngine is a set of libraries, made by Nicolas Gramlich, made to program 2D videogames for android devices through the OpenGL ES 2.0 technology. It is easy to use, has multiple features and is open source! Now, of course it has its disadvantages. First and foremost, it has varied outdates libraries. For example, it cannot work with The 1.7 Java update; you have to use 1.6. Also, one of its opcional libraries, the one in charge of managing multi touch actions, does not fully work, but, besides that, it is very complete and useful.
Ok, so how do I use it?
Using it is not as hard as it seems. Firstly, there are a lot of tutorials out there that say you have to use Mercurial to import the libraries. These tutorials are outdated, as they point to the old location, in google code. It is now located in git. To use this, you will need the git extension, which is called EGit. The newest versions of eclipse come with it included but if your's doesn't have it, you can install it using the plugin update site: http
Here we have two options: To download the source code, or use the compiled jar I made. The first option is better because, that way, you can look at the source code and you can have them updated yourself. On the other hand, if you use the compiled jar, it is guaranteed to work but it might not be updated to the latest version of AndEngine. If you want to use the compiled jar, you can download it here (this is the jar directly). Otherwise, finish this section.
Now that you have the plugin installed (and hopefully the Android Development Kit as well) you can start downloading the libraries. You can find them here. The only one you actually need is the one called AndEngine, but if you wish to download others, you can download them too, just download the examples last. To download them, you have to do this:
