This feature is not working for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.6 (Tikanga).

As stated on kernel.org please be sure to have the proper kernel level ;) just tested this feature for several distros (including RHEL5.7+ and SLES10 sp2+)

A: As of 2.6.14, the following architectures support CPU hotplug.
i386 (Intel), ppc, ppc64, parisc, s390, ia64 and x86_64
