I've been encouraged to update my blog with activities that I'm currently involved with. I'm sorry that I didn't make the time in the past year to keep this blog alive with fresh content. Let's see if I can get my writing "mojo" back with content to please my readers.
Let me whet your appetite with what I have been doing for IBM in the past year. I'm a social strategist for IBM Analytics Financial Solutions. That means that I have been writing, podcasting and creating content about IBM's Industry Solutions that are aimed at Banks, Insurance Companies, and Wealth Managers. I've been involved with the Dave Haase story as well as looking at fraud solutions and more.
For the next while, I'll create blogs that step you though what this means to me and those of you reading this blog.

Opting In: Lessons in Social Business from a Fortune 500 Product ManagerDoes social business work, or is it just the latest marketing buzzword?I
think I know a product manager or two who I’d recommend this book to!
Do you? I’ve only been able to read the foreword and preface of this
book so far, but I can see the value the readers will gain in using a
more social way of performing their jobs.Take a look at the content from the back cover of the book: "Social
business isn't some hot new fad that will be over in an Internet
minute." So says IBM executive Ed Brill, in his new book Opting In.
Whether you are a product or brand manager, marketer, customer
satisfaction expert, strategist, HR executive, IT manager, or CFO, this
book will help you understand how you -- and your organization -- can be
more successful through becoming a social business. In Opting In,
you will learn how to be successful in social business, based on the
strategy and lessons learned as IBM adopted a culture of transformation
and engagement. Brill candidly shares the best practices, challenges,
and results of IBM's social business transformation. Opting In
outlines the process of becoming a social business, through
organizational commitment, cultural change, the right tools, and a
strategy for engagement. Brill helps readers develop individual
strategies and a roadmap for using social business tools, from time and
place considerations, volume and amplification, offense and defense
considerations, through building an army of advocates.Opting In will
help you learn how to use social business tools to grow your business
through customer intimacy, global reach, and product lifecycle
acceleration. You will improve your individual and organizational
effectiveness through influence and reach. You will learn when and how
to engage with customers as individuals and the marketplace through
unique voice. Brill also shows how social business helped him enhance
his personal brand through leadership, influence, balance, and inclusion
-- and how it can do the same for you. From the Inside FlapUsing
today's social business tools and approaches, product and brand
managers can bring new products and services to market faster, identify
new opportunities for innovation, and anticipate changing market
conditions before competitors do. In Opting In,
IBM's Ed Brill demonstrates how product managers can fully embrace
social business and leverage the powerful opportunities it offers.Brill explains why social business is not a fad, not "just people wasting time on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube," and not
just for marketers. He shows how to drive real value from
crowdsourcing, interactivity, and immediacy, and from relational links
across your organization's full set of content and networks.Drawing
on his extensive experience at IBM, Brill explores powerful new ways to
apply social business throughout product, service, and brand
management. Using actual IBM examples, he offers candid advice for
optimizing products by infusing them with the three core characteristics
of social business: engagement, transparency, and agility. Also see the Amazon page for a large and growing list of reviews of this book.Get your book:IBM PressAmazonIf you want the audio version, make sure you make the request on Amazon.com.At the IBM Connect Conference.

In Dec 2009 I posted a blog entry called “Tis the Season to be Social” and it was primarily about the books that were then available for the Social side of business. I thought this post needed updating for a number of reasons: 1) Is there an area of business that is changing as fast as social media? Or being talked about as much? 2) I just attended IBM’ Social Business Jam, which is about to end and was pleased to see the brainstorming that people from a wide variety of backgrounds were doing this week on the Jam. I was interested in primarily ROI issues, and I found much to read. What’s a Jam? Read here. There’s one day left in the Jam, so join in the discussion. One of the comments that I really liked was this one: Recalled from our Lotusphere 2011 event where Sandy Carter our VP, IBM Social Business says at IBM we do not have "ROI" but "ROE" i.e. return on everything. Miss Lotusphere? You may want to replay some of the keynote sessions: IBM Software Channel Video Library. Many of the sessions were about collaboration and social business. If you’re interested in this topic, you don’t want to miss the insight given at this conference. 3) I had to present to my management team about where our team should be going in terms of social marketing. To do my research for this presentation, I read the book “Inbound Marketing – Get Found using Google, Social Media, and Blogs”. I was in a hurry and found it to be an easy read, so I sped read it in one night. I read the electronic version on Books 24x7. The premise of the book is that we need to do everything different when using social media to reach people than we did in traditional marketing. 4) I recently joined IBM’s Social Media Community group and have attended several meetings and met some truly amazing people who are looking at how to improve our social interactions to improve everything about our business by connecting with people who use our products. Some of the articles that I read that you may find interesting are: My conclusion? There is much value in interacting with our customers, partners, competitors, collaborators, and fellow employees around the world. We can only benefit in all of our objectives by embracing ideas from the many people in the world that have opinions on what we do. Will you see changes? Yes, there are a few things we’re going to change immediately and once they are made, I’ll blog about the changes so you won’t miss a beat. 5) 14 months is a long time in terms of book publishing, so what books are available that I could recommend. I need to read more of these books before I’m comfortable recommending them! I do recommend the following books, but I’ll do some reading and get back to you on what else I’d recommend. Web 2.0 and Social Networking for the Enterprise: Guidelines and Examples for Implementation and Management Within Your Organization by Joey Bernal This book provides hands-on, start-to-finish guidance for business and IT decision-makers who want to drive value from Web 2.0 and social networking technologies. IBM expert Joey Bernal systematically identifies business functions and innovations these technologies can enhance and presents best-practice patterns for using them in both internal- and external-facing applications. We now have more than 2000 members of the ChannelDB2.com site! Are you one? I am... and I have joined many of the groups, created some groups and discussions. If you're not a member yet... take a look and consider joining. What is ChannelDB2? It is a social networking site that collects people who are interested in IBM's database technologies. Members can build a network of "friends" as you can do on most social networking sites. What is unique is that there is an aggregate feed of a bunch of bloggers... so this is an easy way to keep up with all the latest news. There are videos, papers, presentations, photos, and free books that can be accessed from this site. Really it is the most complete collection of DB2-related content. There are groups for niche groups. You can even create a group if you have a niche that you'd like to communicate with. I've noticed that the site is heavily used by students around the world who are trying to learn DB2, get certified on DB2, and perhaps looking for work too. The group that I take part in the most often is DB2 in Books. Given that my job is to get books published, it isn't surprising that this is my group. I've invited every author who I've worked with to also join the group so you can interact directly with me or authors via this group. Colleagues on my team run the certification, education, tutorials, and Redbooks programs as well, so I try to relay to you the information that I get from my team so that you are aware of the latest news as it happens. I'm also actively working on the My developerWorks site to add content where needed. Right now there may be duplication between My developerWorks and ChannelDB2... but I'm sure that eventually one of these will become more prominent. One question for you ... I'm happy to see that there are more than 2000 members to the site, but not many people have joined a group. I wonder why? If you are a member of a group you can take part in discussions and can control the amount of information you get back from the other group members. So, if you aren't a member, I hope you check it out... and join: ChannelDB2.com. And join a group! Specifically, join my group: DB2 in Books and add me as your friend! See you on ChannelDB2! Susan
