What a great year it’s been for those involved in the DB2Night Show this year! The successes include: 1) First running of the “DB2’s Got Talent” Competition The DB2Night Show’s “DB2’s Got Talent” competition. This took place in the first few months of the year and continues to please me and others. Last Friday the winner of the competition, Norberto Gasparotto Filho, gave a presentation about what he learned at the IDUG Prague conference in November. Norberto won the IDUG pass as a prize for winning the competition and it was his first IDUG conference and his first time in Europe. I was lucky to be at the conference as well and met Norberto in person. His smile says it all. He is very grateful for his chance to go to the conference, but he earned it. The competition was so successful that it will be repeated in 2012. If you think you can teach people something they didn’t know about DB2, make sure you become a competitor. I also think this competition was successful in building talents in many other people as well. Congratulations to all who took part… you should be proud of your successes. I suggest that you read my blog entries about the competition… as well as Norberto’s blog. 2) Addition of a DB2 z/OS only series hosted by Klaas Brant. 18 episodes took place this year! What a wonderful first season for Klaas and his guests who included Sheryl Larsen, Dan Luksetich, Namik Hrle, Phil Grainger, Dave Beulke, Cristian Molaro, Julian Stuhler, Surekha Parekh, Susan Visser and Willie Favero, Susan Lawson, John Campbell, Roger Miller, Jeff Josten, and Terry Purcell. Did you miss any of these shows? Don’t worry! All of them are available in replay. 3) Guest speaker list to die for! I’ve already listed the guests for the z/OS series of shows. Check out who was a guest of the show for the Cross-Platform or LUW series of episodes: Norberto Gasparotto Filho, Dirk de Roos, Dan Dubriwny, Thiru Swamy, Nadir Doctor, Iqbal Goralwalla, John Hornibrook, Kate Kurtz, Gregor Meyer, Haider Rizvi, Jim Seeger, Max Petrenko, Burt Vialpando, Julian Stuhler, Keith MacDonald, Bryan Paulsen, Paul Turpin, Susan Gausden, Terry Mason, Paul Zikopoulos, and Pat Bates. Again, if you missed any… or simple wish to listen again, all of the episodes are available to be replayed. 4) Scott Hayes winning IBM Champion award for his outstanding service as a partner. These awards were given out at IOD, but I can’t find an online page to point you to. I’ll work with Beth Flood to make sure we are aware of the awards. Scott’s award was: Social Media Contribution (Single Social event) of the Year. Congratulations Scott! To celebrate, join Scott, Klaas and a very large group of DB2 experts (top industry speakers, bloggers, champions and more) at the upcoming Eggnog Party: Celebrating 2011 DB2 Successes and sharing tips and insights for 2012. We’ll share success stories, both DB2 LUW and z/OS, and give our thoughts and tips for 2012. The studio audience will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Date: Tuesday, Dec 20, 2011; Time: 11:00 EST Why Tuesday December 20th? It will be Scott Hayes' 50th birthday! And... his eggnog might have something special in it! Register. This is sure to be an entertaining and informative show, so join to celebrate the many successes of the year, plus wish Scott a very happy birthday! Susan

Once you register for IOD you’ll be sent a confirmation email that will tell you about the pre-conference education sessions that are available. Maybe you’ve heard of these before. They are full day classes that go deep in a particular topic. These classes have an additional cost. Six of the classes are Certification Crammer Courses. These remain popular year after year and help you prepare to pass one of the free certification exams that are offered at the conference to attendees. These classes are taught by well-known experts who helped create the certification exam. Here are the six that are offered this year: In addition to this Crammer Course, Susan’s latest Certification Guide will be launched at the conference. This book will focus on what you need to know to pass exam 612. The book isn’t listed on amazon.com yet, but as soon as it is, I’ll create an entry about the book. We’ve tentatively scheduled Susan Lawson and co-author Dan Luksetich for a book signing on Tuesday October 25 from 4pm – 5pm.
Judy’s book was launched at IOD last year and is a must read if you are interested in System Administration. DB2 9 System Administration for z/OS: Certification Study Guide: Exam 737
Roger’s books will fill an entire bookcase! This year we’re launching two more of his books. One is for Certification – exam 541, the other is about writing technical books and articles. Roger Sanders’ signings are tentatively scheduled for Monday October 24 3:00 – 4:00 pm and Tuesday October 25 from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm.
- (9Q060) InfoSphere DataStage 8.5 Certification Crammer for Exam 421
instructor: Pavan Marpaka - In this one day course, students will review the 11 sections of knowledge candidates are expected to know for the InfoSphere DataStage V8.5 exam. The approach of this course is to review the 'core' knowledge for each section and the associated sub-topics for these sections. - (9Q061) InfoSphere QualityStage 8.5 Certification Crammer for Exam 422
Instructor: Dale Buckingham - This one day crammer course is designed to introduce you to the concepts a test candidate must know in order to take and pass the InfoSphere QualityStage 8.5 Certification exam 422. The material for this course is aligned with the 422 exam objectives. - (9Q080) InfoSphere BigInsights Essentials Crammer ( Mastery Test M97)
Instructor: Glen Mules - This one-day training course is for system administrators and developers responsible for managing Apache Hadoop. This course will teach you everything you need to know about IBM BigInsights and will prepare you to take the BigInsights Technical mastery test.
There aren’t certification books for these last three topics… yet. If you think that these would be valuable, let me know.

I am! For those who don’t know what IOD is, it is the IBM Information on Demand Conference which will take place in Las Vegas (Mandalay Bay) during the last week of October. Last year we had 10,000 attendees and it was an awesome conference in so many ways. See my blog entry about the top-selling books at the conference last year. Why am I thinking of IOD now, when the conference is months away? I’m planning the books that will be published specifically for the attendees of this year’s conference, and working with publishers who have books that will be published before the conference so I can arrange book sales and signings. Last year I arranged to have 5 new Flashbooks launched at the conference and a total of 16 books signings which included famous authors such as Dr. Atul Gawande (The Checklist Manifesto), Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubnar (Freakonomics), and Mark Jefferies (The Art of Business Seduction). I don’t know who the speakers will be this year, but I hope that they are authors so I can arrange a book signing, and selfishly, meet them in person! I recommended Dan Ariely as a motivational guest speaker because I loved his book Predictably Irrational. Other IBM conferences this year have included speakers who were involved in IBM Watson and of course this being IBM’s Centennial, so you can be sure that there will be buzz around the two related books: By Stephan Baker By Kevin Maney, Steve Hamm, Jeffrey O'Brien As for Flashbooks, I have a few tentative plans… An update to the DB2 z/OS Migration book, an update to the Cognos Strategy book, and maybe the Cloud book. We might have a new DB2 LUW book and maybe a Big Data book. I think a Netezza Flashbook might be useful… maybe a Data Warehouse one as well? We’ll see what I can arrange. Do you remember what a Flashbook is? It is the free, small, published books that are handed out at the conferences to introduce you to key ideas that we want you to take home with you. Here’s where you can find the titles we did last year including links to the e-version, printed version that you can purchase and a blog entry about the book: Information Management Bookstore. As for published book, I already have several on my list that I’m looking forward to: By Roger Sanders By Roger Sanders DB2 10 for z/OS Database Administration: Certification Study Guide By Susan Lawson and Dan Luksetich By Robert Laberge Information GovernanceBy Sunil Soares Karsten Oehler, Jochen Gruenes, Christopher Ilacqua By Anthony Giordano By Bill Carpenter Have you registered for the conference yet? I haven’t but will soon. Here is where you can find all the registration information: http://bit.ly/attendIOD Susan

First, what is a Flashbook? This is a name that I made up to describe the short, easy-to-read books that we publish for conferences such as IBM’s Information on Demand Conference. IBM delivers a huge quantity of messages and content at the conferences, in newsletters, in blogs, and on websites. How can you possibly retain all the key messages? That’s why I like these Flashbooks so much. We create them so that you can take away the key messages for a particular product area. We’ve received amazing feedback about these Flashbooks. People have been able to take away the key messages and share them with people back at the office. IBM employees like to hand these out at other events or when they visit customers. So, if you didn’t get one…. how can you get one? When I get these books created, I have three requirements. 1) Printed copies to hand out at events. 2) E-Versions that can be downloaded for free by anyone. 3) Printed copies that can be purchased for a very low price from amazon.com. I’m happy to say that we now have the latest 5 books in amazon and well promoted on our DB2 Bookstore Website. Here are the books that we most recently produced: DB2 pureScale: Risk Free Agile Scaling by Paul Zikopoulos, Matt Huras, Aamer Sachedina, Paul Awad
DB2 10 for z/OS - Cost Savings ..... Out of the Box by Roger Miller, David Beulke, Julian Stuhler, Surekha Pureka
The IBM Data Governance Unified Process: Driving Business Value with IBM Software and Best Practices by Sunil Soares
Business Intelligence Strategy: A Framework for Achieving BI Excellence by John Boyer, The Nielsen Company; Bill Frank, Johnson & Johnson; Brian Green, Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Tennessee; Tracy Harris, IBM; Kay Van De Vanter, The Boeing Company
IBM Cognos Analytics and Cloud Computing: Best Practices for Deploying Cognos Business Intelligence to the IBM Cloud by Stephan Jou
If you’re an IBM employee and are planning an event where you’d like many copies of these books, contact me directly. Susan

I’ve known this for the last week, but haven’t been able to blog about it till today! The authors of Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics will be special guest speakers at this year’s IBM Information on Demand Conference. They are scheduled to speak at the General Session on Wednesday morning. We’ve managed to arrange for Stephen Dubnar and Steven Levitt to come to the bookstore for attendees to get their books signed… the unfortunate things is that they only have 20 minutes available for the signing! Add this book signing to your schedule via the Smart Site Agenda Builder. Their session is Anc # 3779. Have you read the books yet? I have listened to both books in audible versions and can speak endlessly about how much I enjoyed the stories in their books. I will purchase both copies in printed format so I can get these amazing authors to sign them! About the books: Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime?
Four years in the making, SuperFreakonomics asks not only the tough questions, but the unexpected ones: What’s more dangerous, driving drunk or walking drunk? Why is chemotherapy prescribed so often if it’s so ineffective? Can a sex change boost your salary?
I’m very interested in hearing what they have to say to an IBM audience. I presume it will be related to IBM’s Smarter Planet initiative… which really is looking at the world in a different way much as the freak guys did in their books. Susan

To prepare yourself to pass the exams, I have a few suggestions for you: 1) Read through a previous blog entry that I did called Certification 101. 2) Buy or borrow a Study Guide that you should read before the conference. These books are available electronically through Books 24x7 or Safari Books Online. The suggested books are: DB2 9 System Administration for z/OS: Certification Study Guide: Exam 737 Judy Nall DB2 9 Database Administration Certification Study Guide for Exam 732 Susan Lawson and Daniel Luksetich DB2 9 Advanced Database Administration Certification Study Guide for Exam 734 Roger Sanders, Dwaine Snow DB2 9 Fundamentals Certification Study Guide Roger Sanders DB2 9 Database Administration Certification Study Guide for Exam 731 Roger Sanders DB2 9 Database Administration Upgrade Certification Study Guide for Exam 736 Roger Sanders Note that all of these books were written by members of the exam development team and each chapter contains sample questions along with answers and explanations. 3) Show up to the conference early and attend a full day Sunday class that was specifically created to give you the information you need to pass the exam. This year we have three classes scheduled: Roger Sanders: DB2 9.7 for Linux UNIX & Windows DBA Certification Crammer (Exam 541) E5973 This training is designed to introduce the student to the concepts a test candidate must know in order to take and pass the DB2 9.7 DBA for Linux, UNIX, and Window certification exam (Exam 541). The material for this course is aligned with the 541 exam objectives. Susan Lawson: DB2 for z/OS DBA Certification Crammer (Exams 730 and 732) E5976 This is a high-level certification preparation course intended to help you take DB2 9 Family Fundamentals exam (730) and DB2 9 for z/OS Database Administration exam (732). Look at all the great books that will be for sale at the IOD Conference at a 20% discount. There are more books that will be for sale at the Conference Bookstore, of course, but I've arranged a book signing session with the author(s) of the books mentioned in this blog entry. For the first time ever, I've arrange to have these book signing sessions included into the SmartSite Agenda Builder! I'm very happy about this as it will help people remember when and where the sessions are taking place. In the past, people had to manually add the sessions to their schedule, which of course rarely happened. 1) Guest Speaker Book Signing This signing will take place immediately following Atul’s appearance at the IOD General Session (8:00-9:30). Attendees must purchase the book at the conference bookstore and bring it to Atul for him to sign. 2) DB2 for z/OS book --- yes, finally a NEW DB2 book!! Judy Nall’s book is for sale… she is a Gold Consultant and this is the first DB2 for z/OS book published in a few years. Tuesday 12:30 – 1:30 Bookstore Judy Nall DB2 V9 for z/OS Certification Guide - Systems Administration – Test 737 3) Books for MDM, Information Architecture, and Business Intelligence. This first signing takes place after the General Session on Wednesday. Wednesday 10:00 – 11:00 Bookstore Michael Biere New Era of Enterprise Business Intelligence, The: Using Analytics to Achieve a Global Competitive Advantage Wednesday 12:30 – 1:30 Bookstore Kelvin Looi MDM for Customer Data: Optimizing Customer Centric Management of Your Business Wednesday 12:30 – 1:30 Bookstore Eberhard Hechler, Martin Oberhofer, Steve Lockwood, Michael Schroek, Mario Godinez, Klaus Koeig The Art of Enterprise Information Architecture 4) Career Development This book doesn’t relate technically to the conference, but the book was written by a long term DB2 developer and would benefit all attendees who are in the software industry in terms of career development. Thursday 12:30 – 1:30 Bookstore Sam Lightstone Making it Big in Software: Get the Job. Work the Org. Become Great.
Watch for future posts where I'll reveal the Flashbooks that will
be launched at this year's conference and also for further details on
each of the books that I've mentioned today. Susan

IBM's Information on Demand (IOD) Conference took place in Rome: May 19-21. My purpose at the conference was to sell books to attendees, but I wasn't able to arrange for a bookseller to set up shop. I'm not able to sell books myself so I promoted both electronic books and buying books directly from the publisher. Safari Books Online joined me as they provide one of the available options for electronic books. Erin and Martin from Safari were giving demonstrations of their system to attendees. We gave out bookmarks that promoted a free trial subscription for people to try Safari. The URL is: http://safaribooksonline.com/requesttrial/ (Feel free to give it a try!) IBM has a corporate license to Books 24x7 which provides a similar service, but there are fewer technical books than are available via Safari Books Online. I brought my Kindle to the conference to show people technical content on this device. I don't think that it is the best option for technical books. I've downloaded all the readers and find the PC eReaders to be very good. I suspect that iPads will be suitable, but have not been able to use one yet. The publishers who I work with sent me a sample copy of each book I requested. I likely had 50 books in total. These were merely for display so the attendees could browse through the books and to see the range of titles that were available. There was much interest. If someone wanted to purchase a book, I gave them information on how they could get a discounted printed version by ordering directly from the publisher. Pearson set up a site for EMEA to purchase books at a 35% discount, local currency, free shipping and duty: http://www.pearsoned.co.uk/bookshop/ibmpressbookshop Book Signings Magnus Lindkvist, keynote speaker and facilitator Author of Book: Everything We Know Is Wrong – The Trendspotter’s Handbook
Magnus brought copies of his book to the conference and sold nearly 100 copies for cash. Mario Godinez, Eberhard Hechler, Klaus Koenig, Steve Lockwood, Martin Oberhofer, and Michael Schroeck Authors of Book: The Art of Enterprise Information Architecture IBM purchased 300 copies of this book to be given to qualified attendees. Attendees needed to attend a session hosted by one of the authors or to visit the InfoSphere Demo Room. The event was very successful and all the books were claimed in about an hour. Book Giveaways I arranged to have a number of the previously published flashbooks available to hand out. These included: New Intelligence for a Smarter Planet – Driving Business Innovation with IBM Analytic Solutions Break free with DB2 9.7: A Tour of Cost-Slashing New Features Information on Demand for Dummies, 2nd edition SAP DBA Cockpit - Flight Plans for DB2 LUW Administrator I had about 50 copies of each title and they were very well received. Some of the books were moved to the Education Zone to attract / reward people who visited. Networking I was able to meet with many authors and potential authors! This networking has resulted in more books in the pipeline. I'll have more information on the titles in the future. James Lumsden from Packt Publishing flew into Rome to meet me in person and attended the Thursday night networking session that was part of the conference. I was able to introduce James to 25 authors or potential authors. During these conversations we discussed potential topics that would be good for the future. I met an IBM university ambassador for Spain and will work with him to find more ambassadors in Europe so I can further promote some of our books. Lessons Learned Since this was the first time showcasing books at a conference rather than selling them, I learned a few things that I'd like to improve for future events: Since I had books from 5 or 6 different publishers, it was difficult for me to give one URL for people to go to for our books. Our bookstore website needs to be redesigned and updated to include all the relevant books in both electronic and printed format. I need a piece of collateral that can highlight the messages we can give to the customer about the book strategy. This can be a flyer, postcard, or bookmark. Susan

My purpose at the conference is to sell books to attendees, but I wasn't able to arrange for a bookseller to set up shop. I'm not able to sell books myself so instead I've decided to do something completely different. I'm going to be promoting both electronic books and buying books directly from the publisher. Safari Books Online is joining me as they provide one of the available options for electronic books. IBM Press has published a wide variety of books that can be purchased in the traditional book format, Kindle format, PDF format, or through online book engines such as Safari Books Online and Books 24x7. Although owning a book reading device is nice, it isn't necessary. There are apps that run on smart phones and computers to optimize the online reading experience. If you are an employee with IBM, you automatically have access to all the books available on Books 24x7. If you are a student at a University, you may also have access to Books 24x7. Check with your administrator. The publishers who I work with are presenting e-book strategies to me for future publications. The idea is that the books will be available immediatly in an online format of some kind, but the books are only printed when they are requested / purchased by a reader. This means that the book can be more easily updated when necessary and the publisher will not have a warehouse full of printed books. Do readers want online books exclusively? I don't think so, yet. Perhaps there will always be a need for a printed book... and if you could see my desk, you'd know immediately that I am a big fan of printed books! I got a Kindle for Christmas, so I've started to see the benefits of reading on such a device. And really, Kindle is just the beginning. Everywhere you look there are different devices being made available: Sony, Nook, iPad, apps on iPhones and Blackberries, etc. I can't keep up with all the new devices, but I found this website that lists many that I've never even heard of! So, take a look if you are interested. I digress... back to the conference: Safaria Books Online and I will set up in a central location and have plans to showcase many of the books that have been recently published. For an idea of the books that you'll see there, see my previous blog entries: I'll also be setting up book signings for a few of the authors: Magnus Lindkvist, keynote speaker and facilitator Magnus is a trendspotter and futurologist based in Stockholm, Sweden, His mission is to help companies make sense (and money) out of future possibilities and inspire people into action. He founded his company Pattern Recognition AB in 2005 and have a mix of large conglomerates and nimble upstarts within finance, energy, media and IT on the client list. Furthermore, he was elected Sweden’s Business of Speaker of the Year in 2009. Mario Godinez, Eberhard Hechler, Klaus Koenig, Steve Lockwood, Martin Oberhofer, and Michael Schroeck Learn from this team of authors who are high ranked specialists in this field.
Besides the books, you'll also be able to buy IBM-logo merchandise. A wide range of items are being made available for you to purchase. And then of course the conference: 1) Susan Dykman will be administering Certification Exams at the event, free to attendees. 2) Expert speakers from Analysts, Industry, IBM , and customers will share ideas and experience on the value of combining information and analytics. 3) Join in on an industry round table to get the latest in strategy. 4) Browse the Expo Centre for a wide range of real-world solutions, the latest innovations, and demos. 5) Meet IBM executives, solution and industry experts one to one. 6) Take part in Hands-on and Usability Labs. 7) And my favourite... network! Meet people from a variety of backgrounds and amaze yourself at the amount you have in common by being part of IBM's IOD. Do you need some ideas to justify attending the conference? Get some tips from the "Why Attend?" web page. Start packing.... Susan

Making it Big in SoftwareSadly I haven't spent time in Europe in the spring... but I hear it's nice! I've just been approved for IBM's Information on Demand (IOD) Conference that takes place in Rome this spring: May 19-21, so finally I'll get a chance to experience the loveliness of myself! I hope many of you are able to attend the conference as well. My purpose at the conference is to sell books to attendees. Beginning tomorrow you can participate in IOD virtual sessions... from your desk... for free.... whether you attended the conference in person or not. Personally I love attending these virtual conferences and have a good headset and mic to get the most out of the experience. Which sessions should you choose? There have been many blog entries describing the sessions that took place, so take advantage of this information and choose the sessions that you most want to see. My recommendation is the Malcolm Gladwell session. He only spoke for half an hour, which is my only complaint! I could listen to his stories for hours, so I hope that in the future he is invited back to speak at the conference, but is given a large time period. Malcolm's session is playing tomorrow... Tuesday Nov 10 at 11 EST. Don't miss it! Register for this complimentary event and share with colleagues who did not attend this year’s live conference. At the Information On Demand Virtual experience, you will learn how you can: - Transform data into a trusted strategic asset using an information agenda - Improve business performance with data analytics and optimization techniques - Accelerate information intensive projects for immediate ROI Date: November 10, 2009 Time: 8:00 am Pacific Time Cost: Complimentary Register now for the Information On Demand Virtual experience at http://www.ibm.com/softwareforumFor advice on what to attend, read these blogs: Deb JensonAdam Gartenberg(2) (3) and more!Dave BeulkeCraig Mullins(2)(3)There are more... but that's a good start!
