About the book:
If big data is an untapped natural resource, how can you find the gold dust hidden within? Leaders realize that big data means all data, and are moving quickly to understand both structured and unstructured application data. However, analyzing this data without impacting the performance and reliability of essential business applications can prove costly and complex.
In the new era of big data, businesses require data systems that can blend always available transactions with speed of thought analytics. DB2 10.5 with new BLU Acceleration provides this speed, simplicity and cost efficiency while providing the ability to build next-generation applications with NoSQL features.
With this book, you’ll learn about the power and flexibility of multi-workload, multi-platform database software. Use the comprehensive knowledge from this book to get started with the latest DB2 release by downloading the trial version. Visit ibm.com/developerworks/downloads/im/db2/

Last year at IDUG in Berlin, I met Sue Sterling from MetLife. We have a shared love of books & DB2! I’m looking forward to seeing Sue at IDUG in Orlando next week where she will be presenting at the following session:
C05 - Highlight Zone-MetLife DB2 LUW-Tooling Time
It’s not always easy for employee of a company as large as MetLife to get approval for talking about their experience with a software product. So, take this rare opportunity to learn from Sue as to how MetLife has benefited from using DB2.
Abstract
At MetLife we “create time” for our DBAs with performance, availability, cost reduction, and expense avoidance tools. The presentation shares our DB2 LUW footprint with easy-to-follow examples illustrating OPM 5, STMM, WLM, ROS and V10 Oracle-compatibility
Date, Time & Location
Attend this session on Wednesday May 1 in the Grand Sierra Rooms H&I from 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM
About Sue
Sue Sterling is a Database Director and IBM Certified Solution Expert with a deep database background at MetLife as the enterprise continues to expand and globalize. Sue owns the health and stability of DB2 LUW engineering and architecture for nearly 2000 DB2 LUW databases. She has worked with databases for 15 years and in IT for 30 years, with DB2 LUW since its inception, and DB2 zOS before that. Sue is an early adopter of Optim Performance Manager (OPM), Netezza, Guardium, and a key member of the DB2 LUW Customer Council. Sue has authored and delivered technical presentations internationally in such locales as Nice, Hamburg, Berlin, San Jose, Orlando, Anaheim, Dallas and New York City.
During this session, you will learn:
Objective 1: Using a portrait of MetLife real applications, teach how to implement and use Optim Performance Manager 5.1 to very quickly allow DBAs to analyze and tune health and performance more quickly, eliminating the need for home-grown scripting and analysis.
Objective 2: Illustrate MetLife's experience, challenges, and shaping of Self-Tuning Memory Manager to free DBA time, more effectively distribute memory on hundreds of systems, and in some cases improve performance and ease CPU use.
Objective 3: Show MetLife's first implementation of Work Load Manager: our goals, our successes, and our challenges, including business rule definitions.
Objective 4: HADR has become mainstream at MetLife. Automated Client Reroute (ACR) is also popular. In 9.7 Read on Standby (HADR ROS) has become available. Here we will convey our experiences and practical tips with ROS considering the strengths and restrictions.
Objective 5: In DB2 LUW V10 Oracle-Compatible Mode is said to be 99% transparent, up from 95% in V9.7 without developer intervention. Describe our Oracle-Compatible proof of concept and findings which have helped us target Oracle database applications to convert to DB
I hope you can attend this session!

DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows 10.5 with new BLU Acceleration
Technical Immersion Workshop
Fees: No Charge
Date: Friday, May 3, 2013
Hours: 8 AM to 2 PM
Presenters: Chris Eaton, Danny Arnold and Eric Alton

IBM is sponsoring a technical DB2 workshop at the upcoming IDUG DB2 Tech Conference in Orlando, Florida. Taught by IBM DB2 technical experts Chris Eaton, Danny Arnold and Eric Alton, this workshop covers key features from the recently announced DB2 10.5 with BLU Acceleration as well as the compression features of DB2 10.1 as previously announced.
This FREE technical workshop is an ideal way to extend your technical skills to include the best capabilities of DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows. Specifically:
-
DB2 10.5 with BLU Acceleration - This hot new technology helps deliver decision-making information to your organization with precision that is termed “speed of thought” analytics. We’ll explain how BLU Acceleration implements new column organized tables and how compression works on these tables along with other new processing techniques to deliver superior performance for analytic workloads.
-
New improvements in DB2 pureScale that handle maintenance and capacity expansion needs more easily—plus new integration with HADR capabilities to support always available transactions.
-
SQL and Oracle Database compatibility enhancements added in DB2 10.5
-
DB2 compression technologies introduced in DB2 10.1 that offer key advantages in managing and better utilizing costly storage resources.
And of course there will be time for your questions and active discussion with these DB2 experts. Don’t miss what is sure to be a lively session. It is an excellent opportunity to update your knowledge of DB2 for LUW and the techniques that are increasingly required in a Big Data world.
If you are planning to attend the conference, make your travel arrangements so you can take advantage of this workshop. If you cannot attend the IDUG conference, you can still attend the workshop only at no charge.
Full details and registration. Register soon, as space is limited and filling quickly.

Today
a friend of mine asked for advice on how she can learn more about DB2.
She’s just starting in this area and is wondering how she can spend 40
hours of dedicated learning to increase her competence. My answer was immediate: You need to attend IDUG at the end of this month! There is still time to create a justification and to get the trip & education approved.
Here are a few blog posts that can help you create your justification: Ten Reasons to Attend Technical Conference – It’s a skill builder, not a trip to Vegas.
Here are the sessions I suggest you take if you are learning DB2 LUW for the first time:
Monday: April 29 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Educational Seminar: DB2 10 LUW DBA Cert Exam 611 Preparation
with IBM Champion Roger Sanders. Note that there is an extra charge
for taking this class, but it is worth the money, especially if you
follow up and take two exams free of charge.
If
you have time on Monday, take a certification exam or two. If you are
worn out or run out of time, you can take the exams other days during
the week. Free IBM Certification Exams Mon - Fri.
There may be an evening event. Check on the IDUG Facebook page for information.
Tuesday April 30th at 8:30 am Attend the Keynote to get inspired and to learn about the importance of Big Data. "DB2: Database Software for the Era of Big Data" with Bob Picciano, Judy Huber, Paul Zikopoulos
Tuesday April 30th 10:15 am - 11:45 am Spotlight: DB2 for LUW: Recent Enhancements & Trends with Matt Huras.
Lunch
- take the opportunity to meet people during the lunch breaks. I
typically choose any table and introduce myself to all at the table.
This is a great way to make new friends!
Tuesday April 30th 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm For
the next time slot, you have a choice of 4 sessions that I think might
be of benefit. If none of these interest you, it might be a good time
to take a certification exam. Here are your choices:
Optimizer Advancements - Comparing Query plans between V9.7 & V10 (LUW) with Vijay IBM PureData System for Operational Analytics with Jon Lind Advanced Query Tuning w IBM Data Studio for Developers with IBM Champion Tony Andrews Officially Amazing- DB210 powers the world's largest data warehouse with Austin Clifford
Tuesday April 30th 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm I’d recommend this session by JB who I met on the DB2Night Show’s DB2’s Got Talent Competition: The evolution of the DB2 High Availability & Disaster Recovery tool w JB Chakrapani
Tuesday April 30th 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm Either of these sessions: DB2 Business Continuity Features with Dale McInnis Prospecting for Gold Nuggets in DB2 10.1 with IBM Champion Paul Turpin
Another tough time slot: Tuesday April 30th 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm Bonnie’s talk will be about DB2 for z/OS, but she’s an awesome speaker and you’ll learn a lot. DB2 Does What? with IBM Champion Bonnie Baker
These are a bit advanced: Best Practices & Lessons Learned: DB2 pureScale in high demand with Satsumi Takeo Strengthen Business Continuity Strategy with DB2 Advanced Recovery Tooling w Bill Minor
One of these may be your best bet: DB2 9.7.1 to DB2 10: An overview of SQL enhancements with Eric Alton Big Data & Reinventing Cust Engagement: Key Use Cases with Tom Deutsch DB2 to the Cloud: A Case Study with IBM Champion Philip Nelson Best Practices: Upgrade to DB2 LUW 10 with Melanie Stopfer
That’s one busy day! There may be an evening event. Check on the IDUG Facebook page for information.
Wednesday May 1st at 8:00 AM Another Keynote: Curt is a joy to listen to... and I can guarantee you’ll be inspired. "The Latest News on DB2 Application Development Technology" with Curt Cotner & Bill Bireley
Wednesday May 1st 9:15 am - 10:15 am My suggestion for this time frame is to listen to one of the customers who will tell us how they use DB2 in their company: Highlight Zone-MetLife: DB2 LUW-Tooling Time with Susan Sterling BNSF Railway: Details & BP - DB2 pureScale Implementation with Robert Collins Jr
Wednesday May 1st 10:30 am - 11:30 am You can’t miss Leon’s talk: DB2 on the Cloud: Experiences from the Trenches with Leon Katsnelson
Wednesday May 1st 2:15 pm - 03:15 pm In
this time slot there are two sessions that are related to competition.
If that isn’t of interest, the sessions from our IBM Champions Phil
Gunning or Dave Beulke would be good choices. IBM PureData Systems vs. Oracle Exadata - Technical Facts with Chris Eaton DB2-z vs Oracle-Showdown at the Warehouse Corral with Robert Goodman Battle-Proven SQL Tuning Techniques with IBM Champion Phil Gunning Data Warehouse Designs for Big Data Performance with IBM Champion Dave Beulke
Wednesday May 1st 3:30 pm - 04:30 pm I would suggest this session since security is an important part of the database. DB2 Security Challenges with IBM Champions Rebecca Bond & Roger Sanders and Walid Rjaibi
There may be an evening event. Check on the IDUG Facebook page for information.
Thursday May 2nd 8:00 am - 9:00 am Ember or Craig... both good choices for this time slot. The 10 Commandments of Supporting E-Commerce Databases with Ember Crooks Top Ten Things You Need to Know: For DBAs, Developers, & Managers with Craig Mullins
Thursday May 2nd 9:15 am - 10:15 am From my perspective, three great choices. Choose based on your interest: indexing, SQL or availability. Index Jump Scans & Updated Rules for Optimal Index Design with IBM Champion Scott Hayes Practical options & trade-offs for database availability with Dale McInnis Interesting SQL Solutions to Real Life Problems with Anthony Tichonoff
Thursday May 2nd 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm I
have to go with Melanie for this time slot. She’s a professional
instructor and beloved by everyone who knows her or has heard her
present! Wowza! Great Tips I’ve Learned about DB2 LUW 10 with Melanie Stopfer
Thursday May 2nd 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm You’’ll enjoy this talk from former DB2Night Show contestant Brian: A DB2 LUW Fitness Plan by Brian Fairchild
Thursday May 2nd 3:30 pm - 04:30 pm Migrating existing Temporal Applications to DB2 Time Travel with Matthias Nicola
Thursday May 2nd 4:45 pm - 6:00 pm Mini Panel: DB2 LUW with Matt Huras, Paul Zikopoulos, Melanie Stopfer, Calisto Zuzarte, and Chris Eaton
Thursday May 2nd 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm This
is an awesome event that you should take part in. Choose the technical
leader who you wish to get to know better and meet at a restaurant with
others who have similar interests. Networking is really important and
much more beneficial than many people realize.
Friday May 3rd 8 am - 2 pm I highly recommend that you take one of these full day sessions. Both are free of charge. "DB2 10 for LUW Immersion Workshop" "Data Warehousing: DB2 Analytics Accelerator Deep Dive Workshop
Your
brain will be completely full after this week of training. And the
funny part is when you get home and tell people you were in Orlando for
the week, you’ll be asked if you enjoyed the sun. You’ll answer will
be... there was sun? You’ll be indoors learning, so this is definitely a
geek vacation rather than a sun vacation!
Apology:
To all the presenters of the session that I didn’t mention in this
post, I’m very sorry... I tried to filter for a new person. If you
think I’ve overlooked something that is important, let me know. Also, I
plan to do other blog entries that promote other sessions.
If you want to write a blog entry about why people should attend IDUG or what sessions they should take, let me know.

The
top 7 finalists of the DB2Night Show “DB2’s Got Talent” competition
presented today. And guess what we got? Another 7 great presentations
that were both entertaining and informative! The
last round of the competition ended up with 964 votes! Can we top that
in the next round? As a result of the votes, we’ve identified the top 4
and the bottom 3 ⇒ The judges will save 1 from the bottom 3 in this
show.
Next week we’ll hear from the Top 5 as determined by your votes. So support these rising stars... listen, vote, and share!
Here’s a summary of today’s show:
Armando The Secret Armando
is a family man who plays chess and lives in Portugal. He’s been a DBA
for 12 years and was an Application Programmer before that. Great charts, but Armando ran out of time for his conclusion. Topic a bit too big for 5 minutes.
Renu These tennis shots make me win my match in just 2 sets (1.5 hours) Renu is passionate about DB2 and would like to write a book about it at one time. She also loves tennis. Very creative SQL statements were demonstrated in her presentation: SQL from the battlefield. Perfect timing. Theme was great with helpful information.
Ember Altering a Data Type: Two Different Methods Ember
is married with two children and lives in Denver. She has a blog and
will present at IDUG in Orlando this year for her first time! If you’ll
be there, you must plan to attend her talk! Perfect
timing; great story. Ember is very easy to listen to and presented a
relevant topic. The hints she provided in the presentation are very
valuable.
Chris Restrictive Databases: It’s for Members Only Chris is married with 3 children. He became a DBA in the last year and is an avid reader.
This presentation was about how you deal with some of the
nuances or snafus of restrictive databases, which are *not* public
by default. And how you use RBAC to help solve
those snafus.
Excellent tips provided! Great presentation; very professional.
Sreeharsha Data Compression Sree Lives in India and has worked 2.5 years as a DBA on z/OS. He likes cooking and social media interaction. His presentation was entertaining and informative. He provided great tips and had perfect timing.
Eric Improving Performance: Understanding isolation levels Eric is single and living in Brazil. He has a computer engineering degree and loves working with DB2. He also likes running. Great tips on optimizing performance through the careful choice of isolation levels. He
provided great examples to lead you through his tips. Perfect timing.
It was a complex topic, but presented perfectly in 5 minutes.
Mohan How to Migrate the DB2 9.7 database from BCU D5100 Stack to ISAS 5600 V2 Stack Mohan is married and living in the UK. He likes to go into detail with DB2 and is interested in writing articles and books. This
was a very complex topic: look at those acronyms! Mohan spoke very
fast and had amazing slides. Very thorough story presented. “How to”
tips with great examples. Perfect timing.
Another great day filled with awesome presentations! Who will get the most votes this week? The judges chose to save Ember!
Check out the great shows that are coming up. Make sure you block your calendar for all the shows you wish to attend... and remember, there are over 100 great episodes waiting for you to download and replay.

IBM
Champion for DB2 Bjarne Nelson has trained DB2 users around the globe,
from his home in Switzerland to multiple Korean engagements. Regardless
of location, though, Bjarne bonds with students who really want to learn
how to get more out of DB2.
Since
1985, Bjarne has consulted in multiple industries, becoming an IBM Gold
Consultant in 1996 and working closely with IBM Labs. He also serves on
the IDUG Board of Directors and has chaired the European Conference.
Many
know Bjarne by his nickname, Kermit. Of course, we had to ask the
origin of the moniker. Bjarne explained that he once had long hair, a
“very green car,” and did a spot-on impression of Kermit the Frog as he
introduced his rock band to crowds.
The
name stuck, as has the role of mainframes. Bjarne disagrees that
mainframes are going the way of the dinosaur. He explains, “Of course
there are huge changes in technology, but the mainframe is capable of
still surviving. It’s probably the longest living platform that we have
in IT…that continues to maintain its virtue of stability, performance,
high scalability. And at the same time, you can still build modern
programming paradigm applications,” while letting the data reside safely
on a “good old mainframe.”
Even
while mainframes persist, organizations face evolving compliance and
security needs that require new software and solutions. Bjarne has found
DB2 10’s new features very helpful for meeting these needs, though new
software means migrations.
“We
all have to go through migrations,” Bjarne noted, explaining that
conference and web sessions dealing with migration topics and best
practices tend to stand the test of time long after their original
presentation. Such migrations – which may lag several years after a
release – make it more important than ever to collaborate throughout the
year.
A
migration is an educational experience, Bjarne said, and afterwards,
many “are proud of what they know” and want to share their insights.
Hence, Bjarne has worked with IDUG to assemble a content committee that
shares information between conferences. The resulting IDUG DB2 Tech Channel on BrightTalk has proved very popular, with more than 1200 technical webcasts ready for viewing.
But
that doesn’t mean conferences are going away. Face-to-face
conversations and the opportunity to ask questions are very valuable.
Bjarne explained, “If you go to an IDUG conference and pick up 3 or 5
good things you can go home and implement…that’s enough to pay for a
conference because quite often, it’s the issues you’d otherwise spend
hours and hours trying to solve yourself.” In
his spare time, Bjarne is an avid SCUBA diver, particularly in the Red
Sea, and has an impressive music collection that he uses to bridge the
generation gap with his children and granddaughter, Naia, when she gets
old enough to choose her own music.

What’s happening in your DB2 world? I
asked this question to many of the people I’m connected with on twitter
and I got many responses that I’d like to share with you.
Rebecca Bond@DB2locksmith hasn’t had time to update her blog (http://www.securedb2.com)
lately, but is thinking of topics she could write about. Is there
something you want Rebecca’s opinion on? I’m sure she’d love to have
some suggestions to help her write something.
Kohli Kshitij @kohli83 had
a great year! He won the “DB2’s Got Talent Competition” from the
DB2Night Show, he attended IDUG in Denver and IDUG in Berlin, he says
that his favourite sessions were: and... he thinks he’d like to volunteer for IDUG! Sanjeev Datta @1dsanjeev is very pleased with the publication of his new book: IBM Cognos Insight (http://www.packtpub.com/ibm-cognos-insight/book). He
recommends Chapters 1 for anyone who is new to IBM Cognos and IBM
business vision and strategy. Chapters 4 & 5 will help finance,
sales, & marketing departments in usingCognos Insights to develop their own workspaces. If you find the book sold out on amazon, contact Sanjeev through twitter and ask him for other buying options & discounts.
Michael Schulz @mikeondb2 says DB2
is rockin' and rollin' and PureData for Transactions is taking it to a
new level. Don’t forget to read this article that Mike recently wrote

How
would you like to share your expertise with others at a conference?
While at the conference, you can attend sessions and learn about other
areas and encourage other speakers. I’m
sure many people have mixed emotions about the prospect of speaking at a
conference because public speaking is still one of the number one fears
in the world. Even people who you think are natural at speaking in
front of thousands of people have fears. Ask Jeff Jonas! This fear can be overcome, and thanks to the DB2Night Show’s “DB2’s Got Talent”
Competition, you can slowly build up the skills you need to create a
presentation that conveys content you want to share and to speak in
front of others. You’ll get feedback, you’ll be recorded, and you can
learn from your mistakes and do it again. I can’t think of a better way
to build presentation skills.This
will be my third year acting as a judge on the competition. I must say
that I learn an incredible amount simply by listening to the
presentations and offering feedback.I hope you’ll consider joining our cast of contestants this year in our quest to build more talent in the DB2 pool of experts. Here are the details of how the contest works along with a few tips: Contest InformationWhy should you take part in this competition?1) To win a great prize2) To become better at public speaking3) To build a network of talented people in the DB2 world4) To become better at your current job or to help you get promoted to your next job5) To share the knowledge that you’ve created that will likely help someone else. There
are plenty of tips on the internet to help you overcome the fear of
public speaking, but here are a few tips from me for those who wish to
take part in this competition.First,
watch the replays of the past two competitions. This will give you an
idea on the topics that you can choose for your presentations and you’ll
quickly see the difference between good slides and not-so-good slides.
A good presentation vs a not-so-good presentation. Simply by watching
you’ll improve your skills.Secondly,
you’ll be asked to create a short presentation and speak to the
attendees on the webinar. Speaking in person versus speaking on the
phone can be quite different and hopefully you’ll find speaking on the
phone less intimidating to start.Third,
you’ll be given feedback from the judges as well as host Scott Hayes.
Our intention is to encourage you, so you won’t be publicly trashed
like Simon Cowell does to the contestants who face him! You can use the
feedback to improve your slides, your style, and your choice of topics. Here are links to the past shows. We HAVE a winner! DB2’s Got Talent CompetitionSession 1 of the DB2’s Got Talent 2012 CompetitionSession 2 of the DB2’s Got Talent 2012 CompetitionSession 3 of the DB2’s Got Talent 2012 CompetitionSession 4 of the DB2’s Got Talent 2012 CompetitionDB2’s Got Talent Finals – Round 1DB2’s Got Talent Finals – Round 2DB2’s Got Talent Finals – Round 3Summary of 2011 CompetitionSample presentationIn Session 4 of the 2012 competition, Klaas Brant gave a presentation and tips to help you. Here is what I wrote in my blog about his presentation: Extra Special Presentation – KlaasDB2 LUW Prefect IO ConfigurationThis
was a real presentation and a good one, at that. Klaas gave this
primarily to show the contestants a well organized presentation, that is
interesting and informative. If you are moving on, or if you simply
want to improve your presentation skills, take a look at what Klaas did
to get some ideas. The first thing I noticed and mentioned on the show
is how appealing graphics are. I’m not sure if I would have said that
before, but after today’s amazing 8 presentations I can say that the
ones that captured my attention to the fullest were the ones that had
graphics. And not complex graphics, rather simple ones that are make a
connection to the technical material being discussed. Here’s a summary
of the tips we gave over the past month:- Get rid of all typos.
- Use simple graphics.
- Finish on time.
- Run in Presentation mode.
- NEVER ever try to present without slides.
- Choose an interesting topic that is not routine or found in the manuals.
- Speak loud and clear.
- Don’t send too much time on I am and thank you for being here.
- Even if the presentation is small, give a small agenda (I’m going to talk about x and the solution for it).
- Define the environment where the “problem” occurs.
- Clearly explain the problem and why this is a problem.
- Explain the solution (watch your time…).
- Any “extra” advice.
- Where to obtain more info (references, email me, read my blog etc.).
- That’s a lot for 4 minutes! Even Klaas went over time. Remember to practice, practice….
And for good measure, here’s an article I found on the internet from Forbes: “How to Conquer the Fear of Public Speaking” by Nick Morgan.I hope I’ve convinced you to give it a try. You have nothing to lose, but much to gain!Susan
