The Ported Application Contest and pureXML Programming Contest went live in the USA on December 1st! Four new countries are going live this month: France, Japan, Italy and Israel.
This competition consists of five different contests aimed at students and professionals alike. Each contest offers its own recognition and set of prizes. The range of skills encompasses those with a passing interest in XML and database technology to those with hardcore programming skills in DB2. Before participating, you will first need to take a Quick Quiz, a short questionnaire that requires no prior XML or database experience to complete. You only have to take the Quick Quiz once.
Start now by registering for one of the contests. Earn participation points for each entry. A special prize will be given to the contestant— the “XML Grand Master” —that amasses the most participation points.

I'm packed and ready for the IOD EMEA conference that is taking place next week in my homeland: Holland! After the conference I will stay a couple of extra weeks to explore the places where my parents grew up... before moving to Canada.
At the conference I'll be working at the bookstore, recommending books to the attendees. If you are planning to be there... come and say hi to me! The booksellers I’ll be working with have the following website where books may be purchased following the conference: www.vanstockum.nl
I’m not sure how connected I’ll be at the conference, so I am not sure how many posts I’ll be able to make, but I’ll try.
While I’m away, make sure that you keep an eye on Kate’s blog!
It has been pretty tough to find time to create blog entries while at the IOD conference! One of the things I was really proud of this week was the launch of 3 NEW certification guides! I've blogged about this before, but the books were displayed in their full splendor at the conference. With the 20% discount for attendees, the book seller was very happy that the books were flying off the shelves...
Here are the books that made their debut while at the conference:
DB2 9 for z/OS Database Administration Certification Study Guide for Exam 732 (MC Press) by Susan Lawson and Dan Luksetich
DB2 9 Database Administration Certification Study Guide for Exam 731 (MC Press) by Roger Sanders
DB2 9 Database Administration Upgrade Certification Study Guide for Exam 736 (MC Press) by Roger Sanders.
Congratulations to Roger, Susan and Dan for their excellent achievements! If you bought one of the books, I hope you found it useful in your quest to pass an exam or two. I would love to hear about your experience.
Lately I've been answering many questions about how to get certified... or recertified. I'm always happy to answer these questions as it means that there is plenty of interest.
The latest Cert Mag newsletter had this article that I found interesting: Retain Your Value With Recertification. Here are the values of getting certified according to the article:
* Validated knowledge and skills. * Peer recognition. * Increased value to employers. * Increased marketability.
The DB2 Certification Program offers all of these values... and now is a perfect time to get certified or upgrade to the latest level of certification. Right now the Assess and Save Promotion is active... and best of all... is available to EVERYONE, World-Wide!
How does it work?
Want more info? See my previous blogs regarding certification, but let me know if you have any questions, at all!
Two more books by Roger Sanders are ready to preorder and will ship in October! If you are going to be at the IOD conference, you'll also have an opportunity to buy the book at the bookstore onsite. Your choice!

Apache Derby -- Off to the Races : Includes Details of IBM Cloudscape by Paul Zikopoulos, Dan Scott, and George Baklarz publishes tomorrow, Nov 2, 2005.
Details about the book:
Apache Derby is the world's only open source, pure Java, fully transactional relational database. It's small enough to be embedded directly into your Java applications, providing a local data store that requires no DBA support. Powerful enough to support a wide range of traditional applications, this database ships as the default database for WebSphere Application Server and more than fifty other IBM software products. Apache Derby is built on the mature IBM Cloudscape code base IBM recently contributed to the open source community. The IBM Cloudscape code was nominated and won Developer.com's Product of the Year 2005 award.
Paul, Dan, and George have written a comprehensive guide to making the most of Apache Derbynd its commercial counterpart, IBM Cloudscapein any development or production environment. This book systematically introduces the Apache Derby/IBM Cloudscape technology: where it fits and how to install and configure itnd how to build robust business applications and Web services with it, one step at a time.

The book DB2 9 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Advanced Database Administration Certification: Certification Study Guide by Roger Sanders and Dwaine Snow is going through its final tech review right now.... and the reviewers are loving the book! Order your copy now... amazon.com is offering a 37% discount for pre-orders.
This new book is essentially an update to the very successful book that was published to support DB2 V8: Advanced DBA Certification Guide and Reference for DB2(R) Universal Database v8 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows by Dwaine Snow and Thomas Phan.
1) We changed publishers... This book will join the series of V9 study guides published by MC Press. These books are very successful and are excellent resources to prepare people for the V9 cert exams.
2) We changed one of the authors: Roger Sanders teamed with Dwaine Snow... so together they bring their talents to this one book. Roger with his amazing writing skill and the creator of the study guide format that you will recognize throughout his books.... and Dwaine for his deep technical knowledge in the advanced DBA area.
3) Sample questions were added that are similar to the actual exam... along with explanations for the correct answers.
What's the same?
1) Much of Dwaine's content is the similar to the old book... and if the exam doesn't cover certain topics, the content has been included in an appendix of the new book.
2) The first book had 14 5-star reviews... and one 4-star review. Of course there are no reviews of the new book yet... but I'm asking the reviewers to give their feedback so you can see it.
