A friend / co-worker of mine has just self-published a book about her dog, Dylan. The book is filled with humourous stories about Dylan when he was a puppy. Lots of photos too! I haven't received my copy yet, but I'm quite impressed with the comments posted on amazon:

I started my career in database as a technical writer working on the Toronto Information Development team. This is the team of people who create the documentation that is available to support the product in manuals and online help. The team of people has changed much since I left 9 years ago... and the sheer volume of information that the team creates is incredible! I hope the job is as much fun now as it was during my 6 years.
(Interesting side note: One of the technical writers who is back on the team on an assignment is sci-fi author Karl Schroeder. Welcome back Karl!)

Have you ever looked at the annual results of the Certification Magazine Salary Survey? This year, take part in the survey to see how your salary measures up to the others who answer the survey!
Here are the details:
On Aug. 7, 2007 Certification Magazine launched its 2007 Salary Survey, which compiles compensation, certification and education information for IT professionals. The Litchfield Group, an independent research company, will conduct the research and finalize the data. The survey will close Friday, Aug. 31. To participate in this year’s survey, visit www.certmag.com/salarysurvey.
Last year, 22 companies agreed to partner with Certification Magazine as Salary Survey sponsors. Their extensive promotional efforts via e-mail, newsletters and Web sites helped draw more than 35,000 respondents worldwide — given this participation level, it was truly an industry-wide survey. This year, 23 companies have agreed to partner with Certification Magazine as Salary Survey sponsors. Additionally, the survey has been revised to expand its scope to represent the industry as a whole. The survey results will be reported in the cover story of Certification Magazine’s December 2007 issue. Every year, this article provides vital analysis on the state of the certification industry and IT in general. To ensure delivery of the December issue, sign up for a FREE subscription to Certification Magazine at www.certmag.com/subscribe.

This book was written by members of IBM Research: Mining the Talk: Unlocking the Business Value in Unstructured Information * By Scott Spangler, Jeffrey Kreulen * Published by IBM Press
Information from the publisher:
In Mining the Talk, two leading-edge IBM researchers introduce a revolutionary new approach to unlocking the business value hidden in virtually any form of unstructured data–from word processing documents to websites, emails to instant messages.
The authors review the business drivers that have made unstructured data so important–and explain why conventional methods for working with it are inadequate. Then, writing for business professionals–not just data mining specialists–they walk step-by-step through exploring your unstructured data, understanding it, and analyzing it effectively.
Next, you’ll put IBM’s techniques to work in five key areas: learning from your customer interactions; hearing the voices of customers when they’re not talking to you; discovering the “collective consciousness” of your own organization; enhancing innovation; and spotting emerging trends. Whatever your organization, Mining the Talk offers you breakthrough opportunities to become more responsive, agile, and competitive.

I'm spending a good portion of each day now getting ready for the big IOD conference that is only a few weeks away! I guess I should book my flight soon!
One of the things that I am doing this year is arranging for authors, speakers, or entertainment to sign either their books or CDs. Make sure you bring a bit of spending money, as I'm sure you'll be very interested in buying at least one book or CD, either for yourself, or as a gift for someone special to you.
The one I'm most excited about is the children's inspirational book by Devon Harris, the Jamaican bobsled Olympian. I haven't yet met Devon, but I've been told that not only is he talented and good looking, but he is a super nice person as well. I've arranged to have Devon available to sign his book on two separate days. Here is a link to Devon's site: http://www.devonharrislive.com/.
Gladys Knight will be performing at the conference, but is not available to sign her CD.... unfortunately. She is required to travel immediately after the show for another event. Her CD, however, will still be available for sale at the conference.
There are two other entertainers who will be selling their CDs. I've never heard of either of them, but in doing my research, I'm sure they will be amazing shows and the CDs will be worth buying. The bands are Toxic Audio and Hampton String Quartet. Toxic Audio (http://www.toxicaudio.com) is an acapella band that borders on comedy. There may be room for audience participation too, but I'm not sure. The Hampton String Quartet (http://monalisarecords.com/basic/details/takeNoPrisonersCDDetail.html) play classical rock music such as Zeppelin, the Stones, the Who, and more.
Michael Eisner has agreed to sign copies of his latest book called "camp". It is a book about his personal experiences as a child at a camp in Vermont that shaped Michael's life and allowed him to be the success that he is.
Beyond the "big" names, we also have some lesser known, but equally important authors available to sign their latest creations: Paul Zikopoulos, Chris Eaton, Leon Katsnelson, Chris Stakutis, and John Todor.
The bookstore at the conference will have these and many more books available for sale at excellent prices. I hope you are able to take advantage of some of these deals, and most importantly, the rare opportunity to get a celebrity to sign their work.

The first tutorial in the DB2 9 Application Development 733 certification prep series is now available.
DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 1: Database objects and programming methodsGet an introduction to the different types of database objects and programming methods. The material in this tutorial primarily covers the objectives in Section 1 of the exam, entitled "Database objects and programming methods."
This one was authored by Clara Liu who you may recognize as one of the authors of the Understanding DB2: Learning Visually with Examples book. Pass Exam 733 (and its prerequisite) earns you the IBM Certified Application Developer certification, which confirms that you are an intermediate or advanced level DB2 application developer and shows that you have strong skills in all common programming tasks as well as embedded SQL programming, ODBC/CLI programming, or Java programming.
The series will consist of nine free tutorials and is designed to help you prepare for Exam 733. Each tutorial includes a link to a free DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows trial download. These tutorials provide a solid base for each section of the exam. However, you should not rely on these tutorials as your only preparation for the exam.
After a quick registration, you can begin a tutorial. Each tutorial should take about an hour to complete. You can take the tutorials online, or download a PDF.
Other tutorials in this series will follow very soon, and include:
* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 2: Data manipulation* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 3: XML data manipulation* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 4: Embedded SQL programming* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 5: ODBC/CLI programming* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 6: .NET programming* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 7: Java programming* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 8: Advanced programming* DB2 9 Application Development exam 733 prep, Part 9: User-defined routines
Unfortunately at this point, we have no plans to update the Certification Study Guides to support this exam. I'm hoping that will change and will let you know if it does.

This is an event that I don't normally attend, but many of the partners I've worked with have attended in previous years. In the past the PartnerWorld conference took place in February, I believe, so I was a bit surprised to see that this year's conference is planned for April. The conference will be held Sunday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 2 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Sam Palmisano is the keynote speaker for the event and the scheduled entertainment is ZZ Top!
The PartnerWorld Conference is the premiere event for partners and is designed to share IBM strategy, solutions and programs in innovative ways. This year more than 5500 attendees will gather to enjoy an exceptional conference experience that will focus on business management topics that help to drive results and enhanced networking opportunities that build and strengthen relationships.

IBM executive Sandy Carter has published the newest book about SOA, and it is a must read for everyone: The New Language of Business: SOA & Web 2.0.
About the book:
There is now a direct, provable link between an organization’s flexibility and business performance. To optimize flexibility, companies must achieve unprecedented levels of integration and automation of key processes and infrastructure, both internally and externally. At the same time, they must learn to manage their processes far more dynamically and responsively.
They must become flex-pon-sive*.
Until recently, technology stood in the way of achieving these goals. Thanks to the emergence of service oriented architecture (SOA), Web 2.0, and open standards, technology now enables companies to achieve those goals. In The New Language of Business, one of IBM’s top SOA strategist demonstrates how business leaders can use innovations in technology to drive dramatic process improvements and support accelerating change.
Sandy Carter shows how to deconstruct your business into a “componentized” business model, then support that model with linked, repeatable IT services that can adapt quickly, easily, and economically. These techniques will help both IT professionals and business leaders reach new levels of operational excellence to deliver the market-focused innovations that matter most.

I was just reminded yesterday about a blog entry that I read early last year about the book Understanding DB2(R): Learning Visually with Examples. The entry was from James F. Koopmann. The statement that I found most interesting was this:
Now it has been close to 15 years since I worked with DB2 on MVS and have over the years wanted to pick up DB2 again. But having enough time to pull away from Oracle and all the projects I seem to be doing never really gave me the opportunity. Honestly I can say that I am glad I waited. If I would have started with any other book instead of Understanding DB2 I may have gotten discouraged.
One of the best parts of reading this book was that it went into just enough detail for experienced database practitioners to obtain a clear understanding of the components of DB2. Often I was able to easily relate my Oracle, and old DB2 experience, to the concepts in this book. This made learning even easier. This is no easy. I am not even sure that the authors of this book sought out to do. But I can tell you from experience that I have in the past tried to relate database systems, such as Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, and Sybase, together and it is not an easy task to find the information needed. This book cuts through the chase and quickly and easily points out the physical and logical components of DB2 that now allows me to do this.
One of our training courses that was created specifically for those trained on other relational databases has been recently update and is another good way to expand existing skills to include DB2: CF282 Fast Path to DB2 9 for Experienced Relational DBA * Classroom * 3 Days *
