I work out of the IBM Toronto Software Lab. This year the lab celebrates 40 years of operation! An article where the first lab director is interviewed, was recently published in the itbusiness.ca newsletter.
Our current office is 6 years old, is state of the art with wireless available through out the building, and is home to 2500 people, all in the software creation business. The lab may be known for its work on the Linux, Unix, and Windows version of DB2, but there are also people working on Tivoli, WebSphere, Rational, and Lotus. This covers all 5 major brands of software that is produced by IBM Software Group! Beyond these 5 brands, there are also quite a few additional areas that are worked on, but I’m not qualified to even mention them!
I've worked for IBM for 18 years now... most of them in the lab. Very enjoyable! Time flies!

I've met Rick and Klaas several times at IBM Gold Consultant meetings over the past several years. I met with Rick and Klaas this morning to see how I can help with the symposiums in terms of books and certifications.
Rick is also an author and has several books that may be of interest. Here is a link to the English version of his latest book: Introduction to SQL: Mastering the Relational Database Language (4th Edition)

The February edition of the Certification Magazine has an article about the value IBM places on employees becoming certified. Kellye Whitney wrote the article and interviewed IBM's Chief Learning Officer, Ted Hoff for his insight to the types of people who are hired into IBM and the life long learning goals that IBMers take on.
I have the printed version of the magazine on my desk, but was able to locate the article online as well: IBM: A Technical and Professional Development Mecca for IT.
I just wanted to add that one of the roles that I have at IBM is to administer DB2 certification exams to employees at the Toronto Lab. We have a very large DB2 development team at this location, so I end up administering quite a few exams to new hires, students, and full-time employees. I'm also one of the regular speakers at the Lab's New Hire Presentations and deliver a message as to why getting certified is an important goal.
DB2 exams are experienced based, meaning an exam candidate using DB2 day-in-and-out in a particular job role (for example, DBA), will have a fairly easy time passing the exam, regardless of the amount of studying. On the other hand, not many of the people working on the DB2 development team have job experience as professional DBAs, so the exams are much harder to pass and these people must learn the product through books, tutorials, courses, and trial & error using the product. The benefit is that in preparing to pass the exam, IBM employees are putting themselves in the mindset of professional DBAs and this knowledge will in turn help him or her build more usable features for future releases.
Use the new developerWorks tutorial created by Eric Johnson to learn how to debug SQL stored procedures using Visual Studio 2005.
Title: IBM Database Add-Ins for Visual Studio 2005, Part 2: Deploy, debug, and correct your SQL stored procedures
Follow steps to deploy, debug, and correct SQL stored procedures using IBM® Database Add-ins for Visual Studio 2005.
In this tutorial
* Create a stored procedure that updates the salaries in the EMPLOYEE table of the sample database.* Use the major features of the SQL stored procedure debugger.
* Use the SQL stored procedure debugging features to test SQL stored procedures, and to find and fix problems in them.* Learn about the features of debugging SQL stored procedures when run from Visual Studio 2005.
This tutorial is written for DB2® SQL PL programmers. Familiarity with DB2 SQL PL is assumed.
General familiarity with the IBM Database Add-ins for Visual Studio 2005 is also assumed. To become more familiar with the general features of the IBM Database Add-ins for Visual Studio, see Overview of IBM Database Add-ins for Visual Studio 2005 and the Develop proof-of-concepts .NET applications tutorial series.
System requirements To complete this tutorial, you need a DB2 9 database server. You also need to have the DB2 server or client installed on a workstation with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Version 9 fix pack 2 (FP2) or later of the IBM Database Add-ins for Visual Studio 2005. Finally, you need the sample database that comes with the DB2 database server.

There were plenty of notes about the DB2 wiki when it first launched, but have you had a chance to benefit from it yet?
The purpose of this wiki is to provide technical information about using DB2 on Windows/Unix/Linux platforms in a slightly less formal manner than the product documentation. The wiki was started to support DB2 Express C users who have downloaded DB2 for free, but since DB2 Express C is largely the same as other editions of DB2, all can benefit from this information.
If you would like to ask questions about the product, try the Discussion/ Help forums. You'll see a lot of ongoing activity on these forums, so join in if you can.

The August edition of the DB2 Magazine Newsletter came out today and I learned about this challenge that IDUG is running... IBM is sponsoring:
Introducing the DB2 9 Deep Compression Challenge
Based on feedback from early users, Deep Compression is a hugely-popular feature of DB2 9 for Linux/UNIX/Windows, IBM's latest data server. To highlight this feature, the International DB2 Users Group (IDUG®) is pleased to announce the IDUG DB2 9 Deep Compression Challenge, a non-competitive industry-wide competition aimed at highlighting the storage optimization benefits - costs savings, in particular- users can achieve with the Deep Compression feature available in DB2 9 for Linux, UNIX and Windows.
For details see the August edition of the DB2 Magazine Newsletter and the description of the IDUG DB2 9 Deep Compression Challenge.

I'm not at IDUG NA this week for a number of reasons, but a few of my team mates are there representing Education and Certification :)
Susan Dykman is keeping very busy giving primarily DB2 V8 and V9 certification exams, but is also offering other IBM exams as well.
Angela Moore is meeting people in the Expo to tell them about the latest classes, books, and tutorials that are available.
Lucy from Breakpoint Books is well stocked with the latest DB2 9 books such as:
1) IBM DB2 9 New Features2) Understanding DB2 9 Security3) DB2 9 Fundamentals Certification Study Guide
Susan Lawson and Roger Sanders taught Sunday education sessions to help people cram for their exams. Other authors I'm working with are there as well.
I hope if you are at the conference that you are finding it educational. If you have a story about certification, books, or something that isn't being covered by Willie or Chris, let me know.... I'll be happy to share your story :)
