Keep on Learning
We now have more than 2000 members of the ChannelDB2.com site! Are you one? I am... and I have joined many of the groups, created some groups and discussions. If you're not a member yet... take a look and consider joining.
What is ChannelDB2? It is a social networking site that collects people who are interested in IBM's database technologies. Members can build a network of "friends" as you can do on most social networking sites. What is unique is that there is an aggregate feed of a bunch of bloggers... so this is an easy way to keep up with all the latest news. There are videos, papers, presentations, photos, and free books that can be accessed from this site. Really it is the most complete collection of DB2-related content.
There are groups for niche groups. You can even create a group if you have a niche that you'd like to communicate with. I've noticed that the site is heavily used by students around the world who are trying to learn DB2, get certified on DB2, and perhaps looking for work too.
The group that I take part in the most often is DB2 in Books. Given that my job is to get books published, it isn't surprising that this is my group. I've invited every author who I've worked with to also join the group so you can interact directly with me or authors via this group.
Colleagues on my team run the certification, education, tutorials, and Redbooks programs as well, so I try to relay to you the information that I get from my team so that you are aware of the latest news as it happens.
I'm also actively working on the My developerWorks site to add content where needed. Right now there may be duplication between My developerWorks and ChannelDB2... but I'm sure that eventually one of these will become more prominent.
One question for you ... I'm happy to see that there are more than 2000 members to the site, but not many people have joined a group. I wonder why? If you are a member of a group you can take part in discussions and can control the amount of information you get back from the other group members.
So, if you aren't a member, I hope you check it out... and join: ChannelDB2.com.
And join a group! Specifically, join my group: DB2 in Books and add me as your friend!
See you on ChannelDB2!

Can you think of a better way to learn? Whenever, wherever, at your own pace or with peers... without traveling. Now with three different options, you can really find the perfect way to keep your skills at the top level!
Self-paced virtual courses (SPVC) are online courses that include the same quality course content, exercises and hands-on labs as our classroom courses. These courses can be taken any time of day or night allowing students to study when and where they want. Start your training by watching a recorded instructor. When ready, log into the lab environment to complete your hands-on lab assignments working with IBM software. Self-paced virtual courses are the perfect training method for students who can't travel or prefer the flexibility of self-paced training.
courses allow you to learn at your own pace and on your schedule with
training that is completely self-contained from your desktop. Most
courses provide introductory and overview training that serves as the
foundation for more technical and follow-on training. Courses include
expert instruction but do not include hands-on labs. NOTE: All of these courses are less than $500!
Instructor led online (ILO) courses are taught by a live instructor with whom you can interact and ask questions using Voice Over IP (VOIP). Courses are taught on a specific day and time, some of which may even be scheduled after business hours to minimize time away from work. Most courses are exactly the same as their classroom equivalent, including the course duration, content, hands-on labs and student materials.
Just about every course listed above has a book that can be used to supplement your learning or as a reference after you've finished the course. See our Information Management Bookstore for a list of the current and upcoming books.
Looking for a bargain? These days I think that everyone is looking for a bargain. During the month of June you can get great prices on a selection of MC Press book. There are two titles in particular that should be added to your library:

DB2 9 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Database Administration Upgrade Certification Study Guide

A few interesting things about the IOD Conference in Berlin that I wanted to share with you.
First of all, apparently attendance for this conference is tracking to be higher than last year's conference in Den Haag, Netherlands. This is excellent news especially given the fact that there are 12 days remaining before the conference begins. I've been told that it is quite normal for attendees of European conferences to sign up just before or the day the conference begins. So if you can make it, you won't be disappointed.
I will NOT be attending the conference, but I have set up a bookstore for you to browse and buy the latest book titles. The bookseller is Andreas Cwienk from Lehmanns.
I'm disappointed that I won't be able to hear guest speaker Frans Johansson speak:
Entrepreneur, Thought-Leader and Author of "The Medici Effect"
Frans Johansson is an entrepreneur and thought-leader. He is also a consultant and the managing director for a hedge fund. Frans previously co-founded and managed two companies, a Boston-based software company and a medical device company operating out of Baltimore, Maryland and Stockholm, Sweden.
Raised in Sweden by his African- American and Cherokee mother and Swedish father, Frans earned an MBA at Harvard Business School and a BS in environmental science at Brown University.
Frans is a successful author and has written on a variety of topics, from business management to healthcare to sport fishing to how to save our oceans. His bestselling book, The Medici Effect, has been translated into 17 languages and was named One of the Ten Best Business Books of 2004 by Amazon.com.
Frans will be signing copies of The Medici Effect on Thursday, 4 June during the Coffee Break at 15.45 – 16.15 in the Marketplace
If you need more reasons to attend the conference, see the website for lots of great ideas!
If you are planning to attend, I hope you have a good time, enjoy the speakers, meet lots of people, and best of all, increase your skills.
