Too much information? How to cope?

svisser1 Marcações:  newspaper tweeting planetdb2 blogs leon 5.940 Visualizações

On top of blogging as often as possible, I’m now tweeting… mostly to drive awareness to my blog entries.  When you blog and tweet, you end up following others who blog and tweet.  Tweeting is very reciprocal… so if someone follows you, it is “expected” that you follow them as well.

I am following only about 200 people at this point, so not a huge amount, but I must say, I still can only read a very small percentage of the information.  So what to do?

Yesterday Leon Katsnelson sent me some suggestions that I’m finding really help… a lot!

First, Tweet Newspapers.  This is a collection of related tweets, by a variety of people.  A person who tweets will put a tag in their entry, something like #DB2 and all such tweets are collected and produced in a very handy newspaper front page style.  I quite like it.  Here are the ones that you may want to look at:

DB2 Daily

Informix Daily

Cloud Computing Daily

IDUG EMEA Conference Daily

IOD Global Conference (Las Vegas) Daily

BigData Daily

Hadoop Daily

Second, for blogs we have a aggregator called “PlanetDB2” which collects blog entries from a variety of people giving you one place to look for the blog entries that might interest you.

So, to get an idea of what is going on in the tweet or blog worlds, you simply need to look at a couple of websites … once a day… rather than consuming your precious time reading all of the entries that come on a daily basis!

I love data, you love data, and they really love data!

svisser1 Marcações:  dubner books levitt freakonomics signing iodgc 5.331 Visualizações

I’m re-listening to the audible versions of Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics.  As I’m going through it, I’m convinced that the IBM Information on Demand Conference committee couldn’t have chosen better guest speakers for a conference that is all about data!

What are these books about?  Steven Levitt is an economist who is intrigued by the stories behind the data.  He’s managed to find data in the most unlikely places about topics that are not well documented.  Stephen Dubner is the journalist who has an exceptional talent of putting together the stories that give radical conclusions to the data.

The Freakonomics book answered such questions:

  • Do teachers cheat on standardized tests?
  • What brought the crime rate down so low in the 90s?
  • What is the most dangerous job in America?
  • Do real estate agents really have your interests in mind when selling your house?
  • What effect does the name you give to your child have on his / her future?
  • What really matters most when parenting?

SuperFreakonomics:

  • How can technology improve the quality of life for women in remote areas of the world?
  • How did the car save the world from one of the biggest problems occurring in 1900?
  • Why are brownstones in NYC built the way they are?
  • Does chemotherapy really help cancer victims?
  • When is 99% not accurate enough?
  • Why should you desire to have more the IRS conduct more audits?
  • Why are there so few women at the head of large companies?
  • Why is being in the military more dangerous in times of peace vs times of war?
  • When is it best to avoid going to the emergency room for an illness?
  • Why did the crime rate go up so high in the 60s?

These are just some of the stories that I remember.  If you love data, you’ll love the stories and conclusions that Levitt & Dubnar put together based on the data that they analyze.

Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt  are presenting at the keynote session at IOD that takes place Wednesday morning…. and come by to get your book signed after the keynote for an incredibly short signing session from 10:00 - 10:20 am.    I hope you can join us.  Add this book signing to your schedule via the Smart Site Agenda Builder.  *** changed signing date/time for Mark Jeffries

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been blogging about the authors who will be signing books at the IBM Information on Demand Conference this October.  I think it’s a record that we have 9 amazing authors with books that you can buy and get signed.  I’ve read several of the books myself and highly recommend them, but I’ll also be in line buying copies of the books I haven’t yet read.

Although it isn’t necessary, I suggest that you use the Smart Site to build an agenda for yourself, and “sign” up to attend these book signings.  Why?  Simply so you remember when and where they are taking place.  I’ve tried to make it easy for you by listing the Meeting number for each author / signing, but you can also search on the word “signing” in the Smart Site and you’ll be presented with all of the signings that have been scheduled.

Here is the list:

Book signings: you must purchase a copy of the book for the author to sign.  All books at the bookstore will be for sale at a 20% discount.  If you already own the book…. bring it with you!

Viral Data in SOA: An Enterprise Pandemic

by Neal Fishman

“This book is a must read for any organization using data-integration or data-interchange technologies, or simply any organization that must trust data. Neal takes the reader through an entertaining and vital journey of SOA information management issues, risks, discovery, and solutions. He provides a fresh perspective that no corporation should overlook; in fact, corporations might head blindly into SOA implementations without this awareness.”

–Kevin Downey, Senior Partner, Xteoma Inc., Canada

“Neal Fishman’s book on the viral affects of data is a much-needed warning signal for a time when critical consideration of risk and impact take a backseat in the thrive to integrate and apply new technologies. This book alerts its readers of potential risks and indicates how these can be minimized in real-world implementations. A must read for all decision makers for today’s increasingly complex information architectures.”

–Thomas Buehlmann, Ph.D., Senior Manager, Accenture, United States

This year at the IBM Information on Demand Conference, Neal is a speaker at several sessions and will be signing copies of his book.  Neal’s signing session is scheduled for Thursday, October 28 from 11:30  am – 12:30 pm..  Add this book signing to your schedule via the Smart Site Agenda Builder. His session is Anc # 3801.

Book Description:

Ensure the Reliability of the Data Your SOA Environment Depends Upon

Service-oriented environments can share data more widely and rapidly than ever before. Incorrect data can easily trigger inappropriate actions, prevent urgent actions from being taken, disrupt customer transactions and relationships, generate compliance problems, and damage business performance. Companies need a comprehensive blueprint for ensuring data reliability in their SOA environments. Viral Data in SOA provides that blueprint.

Leading IBM information forensics expert Neal Fishman helps you identify the unique challenges of data quality in your SOA environment–and implement solutions that deliver the best results for the long term at the lowest cost. Writing for both business and technical professionals, Fishman shows how to think about data quality on a risk/reward basis...establishing an effective data governance initiative...how to evaluate data quality, and overcome its inevitable decay...and, last but not least, how to actually derive a data quality initiative that works.

Coverage Includes

• Why poor-quality data in SOA can be dangerous to an organization

• Practical solutions for assessing, improving, and sustaining trusted information

• Why data governance is so critical–and realistic models for implementing it

• Benefits of data provenance

• Why business data is a form of metadata

• Programming and database design techniques to improve data quality
