Yes, he’s quite a prolific author! I think the one that most people have heard of is The Blind Side, since it became a very popular movie. I’m listening to the audible version of The Big Short right now and am learning a huge amount about the sub-prime mortgage fiasco of a few years ago.
From what I understand, the topic Michael will be covering at the conference is related to his 2003 book, “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” . Once you register for IOD you’ll be sent a confirmation email that will tell you about the pre-conference education sessions that are available. Maybe you’ve heard of these before. They are full day classes that go deep in a particular topic. These classes have an additional cost.
Six of the classes are Certification Crammer Courses. These remain popular year after year and help you prepare to pass one of the free certification exams that are offered at the conference to attendees. In addition to this Crammer Course, Susan’s latest Certification Guide will be launched at the conference. This book will focus on what you need to know to pass exam 612. The book isn’t listed on amazon.com yet, but as soon as it is, I’ll create an entry about the book. We’ve tentatively scheduled Susan Lawson and co-author Dan Luksetich for a book signing on Tuesday October 25 from 4pm – 5pm.

Today I registered for the IOD conference, requested a hotel room and certified that I’ll be presenting this year. Now it is time to start using the SmartSite to schedule my time. Virtual Conferences - Last year there were several virtual conferences that were run by IBM that allowed you to "attend" a conference via your computer. I don’t know of any that are active right now, but will post a future blog entry when one is available.
Retail books -IBM Press, MC Press, McGraw-Hill, Apress, O'Reilly, Packt are the publishers who have invested in publishing about IBM products and technologies. Conferences - IDUG holds amazing user-based conferences in various regions each year; IBM holds many conferences including the popular Information on Demand Conferences.
Instructor-Led Training (ITL) classes are traditional classroom courses where students are in the same room as the instructor who guides the students through classroom material and hands-on lab exercises. Students are able to interact with fellow students and the instructor and are provided with printed course material.
Instructor-Led Online (ILO) classes are equivalent to ILT classes in terms of classroom material, labs, instructor and fellow students, only you won't need to leave your home or office as you will connect to the classroom via your computer. See my blog entry about ILO classes.
Self-Paced Virtual Classes (SPVC) are for students who don't need the instructor or don't want to be tied to a class schedule. These classes are typically lower priced than ILO or ILT classes meaning that you save on travel and tuition costs. Content, labs and instructors are the same as ILO and ILT classes, but it is recorded so the class can be taken at your pace, where and when you want it. See my blog entry about SPVC.
Web-Based Training (WBT) are standalone courses on the web that provide 6-8 hours of instruction. These are typically voice over power-point format.
Custom Classes are available for companies that want training to take place on their premises with course material that is taken from multiple existing courses and changed to suit specific needs.

Here are articles and white papers that I've read that emphasize the importance of continued learning:
Whitepaper The Value of Training shows that by cutting skills development and training budgets in the hopes of improving gross margins will cause higher attrition, higher support costs, and the risk of falling behind in technological advances.
Article 5 surefire ways to get fired by Denise Dubie shows that the best way to KEEP your job is by continually growing your skills.
Whitepaper DBA Certification: Is It Worth It? by Howard Fosdick compares the costs to the benefits of earning a DBA certification. This white paper is a few years old, but the message is still valid.
Article "Is certification valuable, or not? We have the definitive answer" by Linda Musthaleris says that companies need high-functioning teams that are able to transform and grow the business like never before. These teams consist of highly skilled professionals who have current and relevant knowledge. Certifications are designed to encourage people to keep learning and then to validate their skills.
The results of the IDC study in the November 2009 report by Cushing Anderson called "Impact of Training on Network Administration: Certification Leads to Operational Productivity" shows "a direct relationship between higher levels of certification and improved performance -- when team skills improve, organizational performance increases proportionally."

This document describes IBM Smart Analytics Systems scenarios where DB2 software manages multiple database partitions in a cluster. The scenarios describe optimization methods that can help improve performance in a short time.
The two main tasks for query optimization are:
- Provide the DB2 optimizer with rich statistical information. The DB2 optimizer uses the statistical information to perform its analysis and find a good execution plan. This article describes the best practices for gathering statistics.
- Determine the best query execution plan. If a query needs further tuning, you must inspect the explain plan for the query. This article provides a list of patterns to look for in explain plans. Each pattern is paired with recommended actions.
The key design goals of ingest application design are to balance the required rate of ingest with the availability of processing resources, to ingest data without affecting data availability, and to maintain flexibility in the volumes of data ingested. Identifying service level objectives for the speed and volume of data ingested into the data warehouse will determine the architecture, design, and development of the data ingest application.

I have an idea that I want to pursue and was curious if others have advice for me. When I attend a conference, I work in the bookstore and help sell printed books that have been published about IBM products or technologies. I’m also heavily involved in promoting the adoption of different forms of books, such as e-versions (Kindle, Nook, PC, iPad, etc), e-libraries (Safari Books Online, PacktLib, Books24x7), and audio books. My dilemma is that we don’t currently have an easy way to send people to other versions of the books from a bookstore.
The idea I came up with is to provide a QR code for each book that people can scan into their smart phones. QR codes are the square barcodes that are beginning to get popular. When you scan them, your phone takes you to a website where you can instantly order an alternate version of the book.
Some of the questions that I need to explore:
- How much education do people need to make this a viable option?
- Wikipedia says that QR codes are popular in Japan, Netherlands and South Korea. It also says that Canadian passport applications have a QR code on the online form. So, its becoming more mainstream, right?
- What apps do people need on their smart phones to enable them to scan a QR code?
- My Blackberry has Blackberry Messenger installed which allows me to scan QR codes. My phone’s browser history keeps track of all the websites I’ve scanned in this manner. Is Black Berry Messenger standard on a Blackberry? Does it need to be activated first?
- I’ve also found this website QR Code Reader Finder. For Android http://code.google.com/p/zxing/, free from Android Market.
- What website should the QR code point to?
- Kindle versions must be purchased on Amazon, other e-book formats can be purchased through multiple e-retailers, but not through Amazon. I could send people to the publisher’s website. Or maybe to a blog entry I write for the book with links to the various formats. Or maybe my bookstore page?
- How to display this information at the conference?
- I guess the best thing would be for books to be published with a QR code or to have a smart phone scanner that could read the barcodes that are already on the books. Since this doesn’t exist, I was thinking of creating postcards or business cards for each book so people can either take a card or scan it on the spot. I need to check the quality of the QR code for these options. Or should I create a standard flyer that is put in a display?
- One thing I tried at the CCDB2UG meeting on Monday is to have a series of books with QR code printed on high quality paper and stored in sheet protectors. I could staple this together and can have interested people look through the list to find the codes they wish to scan.
- How do you synch the websites you’ve scanned on your phone with your computer?
- I personally don’t like reading much on my smart phone since the screen is way too small for my bad eyes. I’ve been told that when you back up your phone’s data you automatically get the history of the websites that you’ve marked as favourite. Something for me to try.
