Today’s show had two very important purposes. 1, to give us valuable information about the upcoming IDUG conference and 2, to reveal the winner of this year’s DB2’s Got Talent competition. If you’ve been following the competition, you’ll know that the competition was really strong this year. This meant that some amazing talent did not make it to the top 3, but those who did were consistently good at entertaining and educating all the listeners.
The prizes for the winners were provided by very generous sponsors. My sincere thanks to these sponsors for helping to build talented speakers / educators, and for providing a means to build very valuable skills. Here are the prizes and sponsors:
- First place winner: free pass to 2012 IDUG conference of choice, provided by sponsor IDUG and $1500 for travel expenses, provided by DBI.
- Second place winner: free pass to a DB2 Symposium of choice, provided by KBCE plus $1000 for travel expenses, provided by sponsor HLS Technologies.
- Third place winner: Apple iPad, provided by sponsor Responsive Systems.
- Top 10 contestants won $50 Amazon gift certificates provided by Triton Consulting.
The contestants worked hard to compete and the prizes are very generous to thank them for all their hard work.
Host Scott Hayes showed us a relative performance chart that showed the votes that were received for this final round. The chart showed that first place was a strong first place. Second place was a strong place. Third and Fourth were quite close.
And the winners are:
Fourth - Elder
Great job Elder! All of us felt that your technical difficulties at last week’s show didn’t help you very much. Good for you to use your creativity to post your presentation to YouTube for people to watch after the show. Keep presenting!
Third – Brian
Brian says he got into this competition to brush up on his presentation skills but ended up learning a lot, having fun, and teaching all listeners. As a result of this show, Brian is now considering submitting to present at future IDUG events. Brian lives in Denver area, so he is hoping to attend this year’s conference for at least one day. Personally, I learned plenty from watching Brian’s creative and entertaining presentations.
If you took part in last weeks show, you’ll remember that Jean was the contestant that the judges saved! Jean was very excited about winning and thanks all her voters. She wasn’t sure which DB2 Symposium she plans to attend, but Chicago is one of her choices. Jean is a great presenter and we very much enjoyed her presentations. We all agreed that we need to meet mystery man Chuck who was Jean’s content collaborator for all her presentations. She took part in this competition as a lark and appreciated Scott’s encouragement for them to take part. She would like to present at conferences in the future.
First - Kohli
Kohli was completely speechless to find out he won first prize. He said there was lots of strong competition and had no hope to win. He’s only been a DBA for a few years, but he thought he had nothing to lose by taking part. I’m glad he took part. He gained, but so did we all! lots Kohli has decided that he’ll attend Denver. I’m looking forward to meeting him.
Rounding out our top 10: Douglas, Ember, Rodolpho, Kingo, Richard, and Yonghang. Thanks to all of you for participating. I hope to see all of you in the future as presenters at conference, or bloggers, or writers. You have much to contribute and we appreciate what you have given to the community.
Thanks again to host Scott Hayes for pulling all of this together. We all know that committing to an event of this size and orgazining as well as he did, takes much dedication and hard work. I’m sure you can see why Scott won a special award last year for his contributions as an IBM Champion. Keep up the great work Scott!
To my fellow judges, Martin Hubel and Klaas Brant: always a pleasure to work with you. I hope to see you in Denver… maybe at Scott’s party?
The second part of the show was dedicated to IDUG. I’ve decided to post my thoughts about that part in a separate post.
