What’s the book about? Briefly, in the word of Arvind Krishna, General Manager at IBM:
IBM has assembled a comprehensive approach to Information Governance that delivers the industry’s strongest portfolio of products, services, and best practices to address every organization’s needs. This book provides a practical set of detailed steps and sub-steps to implement an Information Governance program, as well as the associated automation provided by IBM Software.
Many of my blog entries had their origins in a question posed to me. Earlier this week someone asked me for some free resources that can be used to stay on the cutting edge of all DB2 changes. I went through recent blog entries and without much effort, I was able to come up with 10 different types of free stuff. Check it out:
Keeping your skills sharp are extremely important and getting certified can certainly help you do that. But, we need to watch the amount of money we spend on everything these days. Good news: IBM’s certification program offers ways to help you keep the costs down while keeping your skills up.
Here are some ideas:
Take It Again is a voucher program
This promotion has been offered in the past and will happen again this year. The details on this year’s promotion are not on the web yet, but I’ve been told that they’ll be there soon. Here’s how the program works: With Take It Again you may purchase specially priced vouchers so that in the event you do not pass an exam on your first attempt, you may quickly and easily retake the same exam for no additional costs. Learn more about Take it Again!
Free or discounted exams at conferences
Conference fees and travel can be quite expensive, so to help, IBM quite often offers conference attendees a chance to take 3 exams free while at the conference and perhaps half price for further exams. Exam fees are normally $200 a take, so this can be an immediate $600 savings to you if you take the exams. Add this justification to your conference request and maybe you’ll be approved to attend the conference of your choice. Find out what conference have free or discounted exams.
Free Assessment Tests
Typically before a conference, the Certification team waives the $10 fee for the assessment exam in the 3 weeks prior to the conference. We want you to pass your exam and to help you do that, you are given tools to help you increase your skills before attempting a free exam at the conference. For the conferences that offer this program, you should be emailed a promotion code after you’ve registered for the event.
For less expensive study materials, check out my previous entries about electronic books, tutorials, product documentation, Express-C versions of products, free webinars, and WBTs:
started my career at the Toronto Lab writing DB2 product documentation.
I learned a lot, met many great people, and created my career. One of
the things I learned during my 6 years writing is that there is much
work put into this content. Planning, writing, discussing, reviewing,
revising, translating, publishing, and more. Bottom line: there is
quality in the product docs! Another
thing about the product docs is that they cover every area of the
product. People are always asking me how they should prepare to pass
the IBM Certification exams, and one of the valid options is to read the
might have sounded like an impossible task until now. Amyris Rada, a
very creative member of the DB2 product documentation team decided to
build a book based on the exam objectives... using only... you guessed
it, content from the documentation. And here are the results:
They are rather large, but they should provide you all what you need to know to pass the exam. So, what’s different from the other study resources? My favourite study materials for the DB2 LUW area are the series of study guides produced by Roger Sanders.
Harness the Power of Big Data - The IBM Big Data Platform
by Paul Zikopoulos, Dirk deRoos, David Corrigan, Tom
Deutsch, Krishnan Parasuraman, James Giles
Information about book:
Big Data represents a new era of computing – an inflection point of
opportunity where data in any format may be explored and utilized for
breakthrough insights - whether that data is in-place, in-motion, or at-rest.
IBM is uniquely positioned to help clients navigate this transformation. This
book reveals how IBM is leveraging open source Big Data technologies, infused
with deep IBM innovation from over 6 billion dollars in analytics acquisitions,
that manifest in a platform capable of 'changing the game'.
The four defining characteristics of Big Data – volume, variety,
velocity, and veracity – are discussed. You’ll understand how IBM is fully
committed to Hadoop and integrating it into the enterprise. Hear about how
organizations are taking inventories of their existing Big Data assets, with
search capabilities that helps organizations put their hands around what they
already know, and extending their reach into new data territories for
unprecedented model accuracy and discovery.
In this book you will also learn not just about the technologies that make up
the IBM Big Data platform, but when to leverage its purpose built engines for
analytics on data in-motion and data at-rest. And you’ll gain an understanding
of how and when to govern big data, and how IBM’s industry-leading InfoSphere
integration and governance portfolio helps you understand, govern, and
effectively utilize big data. Industry use cases are also included in this

The availability and integrity of data is critical to the business enterprise. When a problem occurs and your data is compromised or unavailable, it is paramount to be able to recover from such an 'outage' as quickly as possible. Equally important, is the ability to recover efficiently by quickly identifying recovery assets and minimizing the recovery scope, required resources and effort. This session will explore in detail the Advanced Recovery Solutions for DB2 LUW. The solutions are comprised of the Recovery Expert, Merge Backup and High Performance Unload tools. The Advanced Recovery Solutions for DB2 LUW provide unique capabilities for changed data analysis, elimination of physical or logical data errors and maximizing data availability. We will examine in detail the features these solutions present and demonstrate, through realistic user scenarios, the business value that can be gained by complementing and extending your data management and recovery strategies with these tools.

Flashbook: Big Data Analytics by Dr. Arvind Sathi About the Book: Big
Data Analytics is a popular topic. While everyone has heard stories
of new Silicon Valley valuation bubbles and critical shortage of data
scientists, there are equal number of concerns – Will it take away my
current organization or investment? How do I integrate my Data Warehouse
and Business Intelligence with Big Data? How do I get started, so I can
show some results? What are the skills required? What happens to data
governance? Unlike many other Big Data Analytics blogs and books, this
book presents a practitioner’s viewpoint. It identifies the demand for
Big Data Analytics, its engineering components and what happens on the
production floor. In doing so, it respects the large investments in
Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence and shows both evolutionary and
revolutionary ways of moving forward to the new brave world of Big
book discusses three perspectives on Big Data Analytics. First, why is
Big Data Analytics becoming so important and what can we do with it.
It presents major trends behind the rise of Big Data and shows typical
use cases tackled by Big Data Analytics – where leading organizations
are already seeing major benefits in using Big Data Analytics. Second,
it lists major components of Big Data Analytics - Unstructured Data
Analytics, Massively Parallel Processing, Adaptive Real-time and
Predictive Modeling, Data Privacy Management, Data Visualization, and
Ontologies. It shows how these components work together to provide an
integrated engine that can combine Big Data with traditional Data
Warehouse and Business Intelligence to provide an overall solution.
Third, it provides a glimpse at implementation concerns and how they
must be tackled. How do we combine various components, which are running
at different velocities and volumes? How do we get structured
information out of unstructured data and combine with other structured
data? How do we provide governance across this data, when the
originating data may have varying quality or privacy constraints? How
do we embark on an implementation road map in a systematic way to show
results as we go and build skill level and momentum for Big Data
Analytics in our organization?

Are you feeling left out that you are back to work and NOT back to school like so many others? Take one of the the Self-Paced Virtual Classes (SPVC) trials for free and you'll be "back in school" too!
What is SPVC?
Self-Paced Virtual Classes (SPVC) are recorded lectures, demonstrations and exercises that you can access on-demand. Meaning... you can take the class in the middle of the night if you like, wearing whatever you choose to wear, and wherever you choose to be (as long as you have high speed internet access! The classes are narrated by IBM classroom instructors.
What is the benefit of this type of class?
* Big savings with no travel costs and lower tuition * Delivers same content, exercises and hands-on labs as classroom courses * Instructors are included “virtually” through recorded lecture, demonstrations and exercises * Conduct hands-on labs with real IBM software – not simulations * Access to course Forums with expert feedback from instructors and fellow students * Flexibility to train when and where you want What is offered in the Free Trial?
The trial courses include a portion of a real course that, depending on the course, includes instructor lecture, demonstrations, and exercises. The trial courses do not include access to the hands-on lab environments. However, a copy of the lab exercise books are included on the materials tab.

Begin your study by reading the course content and to reinforce key concepts, you are challenged to multiple interactive online exercises.
Enjoy the free trial and if you like it... let me (and others) know!
I know! We're on a roll here with all the new books that are publishing or about to publish. October seems to be our big month!
I'm very happy about all of the books, but especially this one! I've been working with Liwen for what seems like 10 years on getting a book about DB2 & SAP published! Lots of hurdles, lack of authors, lack of time...you name it... it was a problem. But persistence from everyone and look what we have! Right now we only have the e-version of the book...which you can print if you want a printed copy... and hopefully we can go the next step with this book in the near future.
Here are the details: SAP DBA Cockpit - Flight Plans for DB2 LUW Administrator by Eduardo Akisue Jeremy Broughton Patrick Zeng Liwen Yeow
This book is a reference document on the fully integrated monitoring and management of DB2 through the brilliantly designed SAP front end. The book takes the reader through all aspects of the DBACOCKPIT tooling and suggest certain best practices that should be considered.

technologies are becoming more popular to help efficiently utilize
resources by consolidating servers. IBM, the first company that
developed and made available the virtual technology in 1966, offers
advanced, powerful, reliable, and cost-saving virtualization
technologies in various hardware and software products including DB2®
for Linux, UNIX, and Windows. This IBM Redbooks publication describes
using IBM DB2 9 with server virtualization.
The book starts with a
general overview of virtualization and describes specific server
virtualization technologies to highlight how the server virtualization
technologies have been implemented. With this introduction anyone new
to virtualization will have a better understanding of server
virtualization and the industry server virtualization technologies
available in the market.
Following the virtualization concept, the book describes in detail the setup, configuration, and managing of DB2 with
three leading server virtualization technologies:
IBM Power Systems™ with PowerVM™
The virtual machine setup is done with DB2 in mind to help IT support
understand the effective ways of setting up a virtual environment
specific for DB2. The architecture and components of these
three server virtualization technologies are explained to allow DBAs to understand
how a database environment using DB2 can benefit from using the server
In addition, the DB2
features and functions that can take advantage of using server
virtualization are discussed. These features are put into practice when describing
how to set up DB2 with the three virtualization technologies discussed
in this book. This book also includes a list of best practices from the
various tests performed while using these virtualization technologies.
These best practices can be used as a guideline or a reference when
setting up DB2 using these virtualization technologies.

the three judges of the DB2Night Show “DB2’s Got Talent” Competition
presented along with host Scott Hayes. It was fun, and hopefully
informative to the audience. I
presented first and sadly ran out of time! It is much harder than it
looks. My presentation was on the Power of Social media. I gave tips
on how people can promote the work that they do to the DB2 community,
how to listen to what is going on in the community, and how people can
contribute via likes, comments and sharing the content provided by
I didn’t come close to finishing (did I spend too much time on my bio?
give too many examples?), I’ve posted my slides in SlideShare. Here’s
where you can get them: Db2 night social_promoting_susan. Martin
presented next: “How I Started Dropping DB2 Indexes & Put my Girls
Through College”. Martin is a great teacher and his presentation was
very informative. He also ran out of time and reminded us that he’ll
being doing a similar presentation at IDUG this year. Scott
was next: “ Breakthrough DB2 LUW Performance Every Day!” . I loved the
one quote that Scott used: “Success comes to those who focus on helping
other people be successful”. I would say that all involved in this
show have this sentiment in mind! Entertaining presentation and even
Scott ran out of time! Lastly
came Klaas: “Da House is on Fire: How to Fix a Performance Problem”.
Very interesting graphics, but very effective as well. Klaas is a
natural speaker and if you get a chance, you should attend his talks.
Of the 4 presentations, Klaas was the only one who finished on time!
voting was interesting, but not surprising. Clearly the audience
prefers technical content about DB2. My presentation was in a
completely different category! Congratulations to Martin for being the
overall “winner” of this show. Some reminders:
Attend the shows in March to witness our finalists presenting in aim of the big prize.
