Another great IBM conference is around the corner. This one is called InterConnect and is focused on cloud and mobile technologies. Since data and analytics play in both areas, you'll find great sessions to increase your skills and knowledge by attending.
The conference takes place in Las Vegas, February 22-26. I think most of us in the north east are already tired of winter, so a conference in a warmer climate is very welcome this time of year!

A few weeks ago, I started a discussion in the DB2 Professional LinkedIn group that turned out to be quite popular. Request to join the group so you can take part in this and other discussions.
My question: When you were using DB2 for the first time, how did you go about learning how to use it? If you are already an expert, what learning path do you recommend to any newbies who you may meet?
This blog entry summarizes the responses. The text in italics is a response... [More]
I was pretty surprised when I heard the top selling books at the IBM Insight conference that started October 26, 2014 in Las Vegas. Why? Well, I had blogged about each and every one of them. So either I had a premonition as to what would be popular or my blog entries helped them sell? Cause and effect??
Anyway, the books that most people took home were the books that we were giving away for free. This includes the three latest Flashbooks, plus these retail books that were purchased by IBM to give away:
Can you think of an industry that is changing more drastically than publishing is at this time? More books are now being sold for devices such as Kindle than printed books. There are so many Kindle-like book readers available that it is pretty difficult to name them all. I’m not sure if “books on tape” or audible forms of books were popular in the past, but I’ve personally become a huge fan and am listening to about half the books I consume in a year.
Another big change is the... [More]

I enjoy meeting people, so the IBM Information on Demand Conference
is one of my favourite events that I attend every year. In this post,
I’d like to talk about the authors I’ve met and those who will be available to
meet you this year. I’ve
been lucky enough to meet some pretty famous people at previous IOD
conferences. Some of the highlights: Malcolm Gladwell, the Stephens
from the Freakonomics books, Steven Covey, Michael Eisner; and remember
the craziness surrounding Michael Lewis and Billy Beane last year? Beyond

knowledgeable about our products and another is that they tend to make
excellent authors. Take a look at this list and you’ll see: Craig Mullins Craig has published two books this year! What a great accomplishment. One of the things that I love most about the IBM Information on Demand
Conference is the buzz on books. Every year we have a giant bookstore that
showcases all the latest books related to DB2, Analytics, Big Data, and more.
My job is to arrange to have the right set of books at the conference and to
invite authors to be available to sign copies of their books for attendees.
All books purchased at the bookstore are discounted by 20% off the retail

I like to read when I’m on vacation. Actually, I like to read all the time.
I get through many books in a year and find that I really like learning this

Here are a few books I'd suggest you consider for your summer reading list:

I like to believe that we all “have a book in us”. I’ve written two books
and found it hard work, but very gratifying to accomplish such a feat. I know
many authors and most feel the same way. You can tell by looking at how many
people become repeat authors!
Maybe not everyone can write a book, but for those who have an interest,
consider writing an article for starters. Many people come to me with ideas for
articles and books and I’ve helped people get published in many places. Most
recently I’ve worked with Dan Gibson... [More]

Yesterday I read this article “ How Employers Can Help Solve the Skills Gap ” by David Smith
which discusses the skills gaps that are appearing throughout the world. A
big part of the problem is the lack of corporate funding for education. This
leaves employees to take initiative to keep their skills sharp. But how does
one do so?
My suggestion is to get skilled digitally. IBM is good at digital…

how to do this.

The exam that you need to pass to start your journey on the road to DB2 Certification is the DB2 Family Fundamentals Exam 730. This exam only contains questions for concepts that are common across all platforms that DB2 runs on. There is a heavy SQL component to the exam, and most people who use DB2 daily should find this exam fairly easy. You’ll find it easier as well if you examine the objectives and use one or more of the listed study materials. Database Associate Certification Role Exam 730 – DB2 9 Family Fundamentals Number of... Also, the popularity of iPads only increases with time. Note that some of these books haven’t published yet, but will soon. I haven’t noted which to encourage you to click the link to find out.
