While listening to this excellent podcast "Talking Big Data" which is a conversation between Data Expert Jean-Marc Blaise and Big Data Expert Leon Katsnelson, I learned about another technology preview that I wish to share with you.
Leon called the IBM Big SQL Technology “easier than hadoop”. We want to know if you think Leon’s statement is accurate. To do so, download the software, give it a try, and give us your feedback.
Here are the details.
What is Big SQL?
IBM Big SQL is new and exciting technology that extends the power of SQL to the world of Apache Hadoop data repositories (HDFS and HBase).
How does the Big SQL Technology Preview program work?
This Technology Preview program is open to a limited number of participants. To request participation in this program fill out this form.
Once approved, you’ll get access to a Hadoop cluster on the IBM IM Demo Cloud. This Hadoop cluster is fully configured with both HDFS and HBase and has sample data loaded and available for queries.
You’ll be able to download Big SQL JDBC and ODBC drivers and use these drivers with your favourite applications to explore and query data in the Hadoop cluster. You’ll also be able to use command line tools like JSqsh to submit queries.
To learn how to use Big SQL and to get maximum value out of the program it is suggested that you take a free course on BigD
Very easy to begin your preview
By participating in the Big SQL Technology Preview program on the cloud, you gain access to a Hadoop cluster with HDFS and HBase installed and loaded with sample data all ready to go. There is no need to obtain hardware, install and patch operating systems, install the Hadoop code or manage the Hadoop cluster. Simply download the provided JDBC or ODBC driver and connect your favorite application to the Hadoop data. Alternatively, you can use a command line interface to submit SQL queries against your Hadoop data. We will manage and run the Hadoop cluster using the latest stable code so you will never be rediscovering old issues. Our development team will have full access to the same system so if there is an issue that you want to bring to our attention we will be able to diagnose it on the system with you. No need for cumbersome diagnostic information collection and complex processes for recreating issues.
I hope you can take part! Thanks to Leon for making me aware of this program.
