Can you think of an industry that is changing more drastically than publishing is at this time? More books are now being sold for devices such as Kindle than printed books. There are so many Kindle-like book readers available that it is pretty difficult to name them all. I’m not sure if “books on tape” or audible forms of books were popular in the past, but I’ve personally become a huge fan and am listening to about half the books I consume in a year.
Another big change is the movement away from large books. Remember when the technical books you used to purchase were at least 2 inches thick? These types of books are not selling well now… nor are publishers eager to get into such a venture.
But, what is one to do when the topic is huge and deserves a large number of pages to cover it effectively? Take a look at what publisher MC Press has decided to do with the certification study guide by Susan Lawson and Dan Luksetich: “DB2 10 for z/OS Database Administration (Exam 612)”:
Purchase individual chapters in electronic format as needed. The chapters are priced from $2.99 to $9.99 (depending on length).
This link takes you to the “Database & Data Management” category on the MC Press ebook site. When you scroll down, you’ll see the individual chapters for sale, followed by the entire book item.
Let me know what you think of this offering. I am working on having other books made available in the same way.
