A new way to study for DB2 Certifications

I started my career at the Toronto Lab writing DB2 product documentation. I learned a lot, met many great people, and created my career. One of the things I learned during my 6 years writing is that there is much work put into this content. Planning, writing, discussing, reviewing, revising, translating, publishing, and more. Bottom line: there is quality in the product docs!
Another thing about the product docs is that they cover every area of the product. People are always asking me how they should prepare to pass the IBM Certification exams, and one of the valid options is to read the documentation.
That might have sounded like an impossible task until now. Amyris Rada, a very creative member of the DB2 product documentation team decided to build a book based on the exam objectives... using only... you guessed it, content from the documentation. And here are the results:
They are rather large, but they should provide you all what you need to know to pass the exam.
So, what’s different from the other study resources?
My favourite study materials for the DB2 LUW area are the series of study guides produced by Roger Sanders.
There are many differences between the study guides that Roger produces and what you’ll get from these new preparation guides produced from the product documentation. First of all, Roger was a key member of the exam development teams. He wrote many of the questions that you’ll see on the exam. This enabled Roger to prioritize what he put in the book, so that content that is not necessary for the exam could be downplayed somewhat. Also, Roger wrote many sample questions for his books and provides the answers to these questions and reasons why the correct answers are correct. This is an added value that you cannot get anywhere else.
These are also published books that you can purchase in printed format or in an electronic format for one of your reading devices.
Currently Roger’s books are NOT available for the DB2 V10 product. Roger is in the process of updating or shall I say, rewriting his books, for the current level. Follow my blog to get notified when the new books are ready.
The developerWorks Tutorials are another free option available for test takers to prepare for their exams. These are currently being updated for V10, but only one of them has already been published: DB2 10.1 Fundamentals certification preparation series.
Follow my blog to get notified as these become available.
If certification is your goal, I encourage you to read this article: The Man to See About Certification - “The guru of DB2 certification tests talks about how he puts them together—and how they can help your career” by Howard Baldwin
