2) I've had the pleasure of reviewing the latest edition of the "Getting Started with DB2 Express-C" free book. Raul and his team did an amazing job writing a short book that covers just about everything that you need to know to get started using DB2. The latest edition isn't posted yet, but should be really soon.
3) Compression, WLM, and SQL/PL are the big stories. Did you see the cool video that explains how great these feature is? The video is actually the Technology Update Chat with the Lab.... watch it :)
The release of DB2 9.7 for Linux, Unix and Windows is creating quite a stir in the industry. CNET said that "IBM puts Oracle to the Sword." ZDnet commented that "IBM's latest DB2 woos Oracle customers." Industry analyst Merv Adrian said, "This is a BIG deal." Beta participants claim that "this is a paradigm shift" and "simply amazing."
IDUG is pleased to host this unique 60-minute webcast on Wednesday, June 24 at 12:00pm Eastern. In this free event, you'll discover the new features of DB2 9.7 that will save you time, improve performance and lower your management costs. Join renowned DB2 evangelist and respected author Paul Zikopoulos as he explains what the DB2 9.7 buzz is all about. Along with live Q&A, Paul will discuss DB2 9.7's new features for:
1. increasing performance, reliability and ease of use 2. lowering management costs 3. enhancing workload management 4. compatibility with Oracle Database SQL, PL/SQL, data types, scripting and more
In addition, IDUG President Michael McBride will discuss how this webcast is just one example of the many technical DB2 resources offered through IDUG's worldwide DB2 community.
I ended up getting several comments after my blog entry Do you know an IBM Data Champion published. In that entry I had specifically mentioned the authors in the group, but beyond authors of retail books, I'd like to mention some of the other ways Data Champions have been very active.
Book reviewers for DB2 content: Again I know I'm going to miss several people who were very active in reviewing either IBM Redbooks or Retail books to ensure that they were accurate before they published. I thank you all! I'd like to specifically mention Fred Sobotka who was the key influencer and reviewer on the following book:

I've enjoyed writing about these people and have ideas for future entries... ie, those critical for conference successes, those who contributed in areas beyond DB2, and more! Send me ideas if you have them.
Thanks again to all current Data Champions and be sure to nominate any people who you think are strong contributors who are not recognized yet.
Recognizing exceptional contributions to the Data Management community
I've been blessed with many friends and I'm happy to say that many of the IBM Data Champions are friends of mine! I know I'm not unique since likely most of us in the data community know these well-known, friendly, outgoing people! Beyond friendship, one of my primary connections with these people are books. Many, if not all, of these people are authors of retail books, IBM Redbooks, articles, courses, presentations, exams, forums, websites, blogs and more! What exactly is a Data Champion? Data Champions are objective experts. They have no official obligation to
IBM. They simply share their opinions and years of experience with
others in the field, and their work contributes greatly to the overall
success of Data Management. For 2009,
IBM honors the commitment of 88 individuals with a special designation
— Data Champion — as a way of showing our appreciation for the time and
energy these exceptional community members expend.
Check out our Data Champions! In the photo above, I recognize Scott, Dave, Judy, Sheryl, and Julian. Check out the photos and profiles for each of the Data Champions....
Want to become or nominate a Data Champion? Click here for information on how this works. Books by Data Champions: I've listed a few of the retail books that were recently published by one or more of our Data Champions. Many others acted as reviewers of these books and others not listed. I thank each and everyone of you for your help in building our retail book projected and want you to know that you are greatly appreciated for everything that you do!
DB2 9.7 for Linux, Unix, and Windows has out-of-the-box support for
Oracle's SQL and PL/SQL dialects. This allows many applications written
against Oracle to execute virtually unchanged against DB2. Whether you
want to switch your custom application or extend your DBMS vendor
support, its now time to break free with DB2!

Can you think of a better way to learn? Whenever, wherever, at your own pace or with peers... without traveling. Now with three different options, you can really find the perfect way to keep your skills at the top level!
virtual courses (SPVC) are online courses that include the same quality
course content, exercises and hands-on labs as our classroom courses.
These courses can be taken any time of day or night allowing students
to study when and where they want. Start your training by watching a
recorded instructor. When ready, log into the lab environment to
complete your hands-on lab assignments working with IBM software.
Self-paced virtual courses are the perfect training method for students
who can't travel or prefer the flexibility of self-paced training.
courses allow you to learn at your own pace and on your schedule with
training that is completely self-contained from your desktop. Most
courses provide introductory and overview training that serves as the
foundation for more technical and follow-on training. Courses include
expert instruction but do not include hands-on labs. NOTE: All of these courses are less than $500!
led online (ILO) courses are taught by a live instructor with whom you
can interact and ask questions using Voice Over IP (VOIP). Courses are
taught on a specific day and time, some of which may even be scheduled
after business hours to minimize time away from work. Most courses are
exactly the same as their classroom equivalent, including the course
duration, content, hands-on labs and student materials.

I met the four authors of this book through a volunteer organization that I am part of in the Toronto Lab: Technical Vitality. This is a Women in Leadership initiative that encourages continuous learning. The last two events that came from this group were:
1) Tech Connect. This took place last week. I had a poster session about the publishing options that are available and met many potential authors and am following up on several book ideas. The thought behind this event is for people in the lab to share the best practices that they use with their product or to develop their product. This is the second year that the Lab ran this event. This year we had something like 80 posters in the exhibit along with about 30 on Second Life. The winning group should how they can use DB2 and business intelligence tools to analyze customer support data to learn more about their customers. Since I was busy presenting on my own area of expertise, I wasn't able to spend as much time as I wanted with the other presenters. I plan to review the submitted posters from each group to learn more and will share some of the great ideas if possible.
2) Mentoring. We all know how important it is to learn from others to make the most of your career. With the mentoring session, we help match people in the lab to someone more senior than them in their pursuit of learning about the company and future job opportunities. This went very well and will be repeated over the course of the year. Some of the participants were given a copy of the "Intelligent Mentoring: How IBM Creates Value through People, Knowledge, and Relationships" book which will help them fine-tune their mentoring relationships.
A Rough Cuts book is a pre-published manuscript. As you may know..... once a manuscript is given from an author team to the publisher, it may take 3-4 months before the book is printed and available to purchase. By getting a Rough Cuts version of a book, you will be more able to stay on top of the curve of technology and if you choose, you can provide feedback to improve the final version of the book.
