I know that it is very difficult for some people to arrange to go to a conference at their company's expense. Even IBMers who are trying to attend an IBM conference, it can be challenging. It seems that the rule is to now have 2 presentations or more accepted at the conference. Maybe this is a requirement for many other companies as well. If it's tough to get approval if you volunteer to be a speaker at the conference, you can imagine how difficult it is to get approval to attend the conference to be educated.
A friend of mine suggested that we look into providing a scholarship to one or more people that would entail a free registration to the conference. I like the idea and will promote this idea for future conferences where I can. As I was thinking of this, I came across this news item:
Got 10 minutes? Enter the DB2 9 Compression ChallengeThe DB2 9 Compression Challenge is less than a month away from closing and we need your entry. There is no purchase necessary and it takes only 10 minutes to enter. You don’t need to be running any version of DB2 to participate. First Prize - Full-event registration to one of IDUG's 2008 events. Second Prize – Upgrade Membership for the same eventsIDUG 2008 - Australia (March 2008 in Sydney, Australia) IDUG 2008- North America (May 5-10, 2008, in Dallas, Texas) IDUG 2008 - Europe (Dates/Location TBD)
So a "scholarship" to attend an IDUG conference in 2008 is possible! All you have to do is to enter this challenge. My friend is working at a shop that isn't running DB2... yet, so I like the caveat that You don’t need to be running any version of DB2 to participate.
I hope this gives an opportunity to one or two people who have not been able to go to conferences... and would like to. Conferences are a great way to keep up to date on a large variety of related topics. It helps you network with people who can help you in many different ways. And, perhaps most obvious of all, going to a conference gives you an opportunity to earn several certifications.... normally the tests are $150 US, regardless if you pass or fail, so taking exams is a very easy way to justify attending a conference.
But, if you are still unable to go a conference, don't despair. IBM provides many learning opportunities that you can take part in, either for free or inexpensively. I'll use books as an example... see our Bookstore Page for links to excellent books that can be used for self-study.... and we try to point to the lowest cost provider of the books. The other book example is of course the IBM Redbooks. For free you can download PDF versions of technical books that are excellent references as well as self-study resources. DeveloperWorks is another example where you can find a variety of helpful technical documents... free of charge. As for classroom education, our new ILO offerings are an excellent way to take award-winning education, right at your desk.
We all know how important database security is -- no one wants to hear that their precious data was hacked or compromised in anyway. According to the article The Job of Securing the Database published on DATE: 21-SEP-2007 by Deborah Perelman, a Forrester Research study shows that DBAs are only able to spend 7% of their time ensuring that data is secure.
The worst message in the article is that DBAs are so overworked in their day to day duties that they are typically unable to spend more time on addressing security issues AND they are unlikely to have time to upgrade their skills in this area.
I have some good news for you if you are in this situation. Earlier this year, Rebecca Bond and three database security experts from the Toronto lab published a book about database security. The book, Understanding DB2 9 Security, is the only comprehensive guide to securing DB2 and leveraging the powerful new security features of DB2 9. This book gives DBAs and their managers a wealth of security information that is available nowhere else. It presents real-world implementation scenarios, step-by-step examples, and expert guidance on both the technical and human sides of DB2 security.
Those who have read the book have found it very beneficial. Buy the book... you won't be disappointed and you'll be able to quickly expand your knowledge of security issues. If you are one of the lucky DBAs who is attending the IBM IOD Conference, October 14 - 19, 2007 Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas, you'll be able to buy this book at a 20% discount, and you'll be able to attend one or more of the following sessions related to DB2 Security:

Reaching The Goal: How Managers Improve a Services Business Using Goldratt's Theory of Constraints by John Ricketts
Managing services is extremely challenging, and traditional “industrial” management techniques are no longer adequate. In Reaching the Goal, Dr. John Arthur Ricketts presents a breakthrough management approach that embraces what makes services different: their diversity, complexity, and unique distribution methods. Ricketts draws on Eli Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints (TOC), one of this generation’s most successful management methodologies...thoroughly adapting it to the needs of today’s professional, scientific, and technical services businesses. He reveals how to identify the surprising constraints that limit your organization’s performance, execute more effectively within those constraints, and then loosen or even eliminate them. This book’s relentlessly practical techniques reflect several years of advanced IBM research and consulting with enterprise clients. Step-by-step, Ricketts shows how to apply them throughout your most crucial business functions...from project management to finance, process improvement to sales and marketing.
Do It Wrong Quickly: How the Web Changes the Old Marketing Rules by Mike Moran
For decades, marketers have been taught to carefully plan ahead because “you must get it right–it’s too expensive to change.” But, in the age of the Web, you can know in hours whether your strategy’s working. Today, winners don’t get it right the first time: they start fast, change fast, and relentlessly optimize their way to success. They do it wrong quickly…then fix it, just as quickly! In this book, Internet marketing pioneer Mike Moran shows you how to do that–step-by-step and in detail. Drawing on his experience building ibm.com into one of the world’s most successful sites, Moran shows how to quickly transition from “plan then execute” to a non-stop cycle of refinement. You’ll master specific techniques for making the Web’s “two-way marketing conversation” work successfully, productively, and profitably. Next, Moran shows how to choose the right new marketing tools, craft them into an integrated strategy, and execute it…achieving unprecedented efficiency, accountability, speed, and results.

Building an Intelligent Web: Theory and Practice will be available in October. The book is intended to be a textbook, so the price is higher than other books that I mention.
Here are the details:
The World Wide Web has become an extremely popular way of publishing and distributing electronic resources. Though the Web is rich with information, collecting and making sense of this data is difficult because it is rather unorganized. Building an Intelligent Web introduces students and professionals to the state-of-the art development of Web Intelligence techniques and teaches how to apply these techniques to develop the next generation of intelligent Web sites. Each chapter contains theoretical bases, which are also illustrated with the help of simple numeric examples, followed by practical implementation. Students will find Building an Intelligent Web to be an active and exciting introduction to advanced Web mining topics.
Topics covered include Web Intelligence, Information Retrieval, Semantic Web, Classification and Association Rules, SQL, Database Theory, Applications to e-commerce and Bioinformatics, Clustering, Modeling Web Topology, and much more!
Includes IBM DB2 Express-C, a data server used in the development and deployment of applications including: XML, C/C++, Java, .NET, PHP, and more.
If you are a professor or curriculum developer, request a sample copy from the publisher. We're very pleased that the authors and publisher of this book decided to include DB2 Express-C on the CD that is shipped with the book. Most publishers are reluctant to ship CDs with their books any longer, but it can be very important, especially for students.

Most of the work-related blogs that I read these days are found on PlanetDB2.com. I must say that Willie Favero's blog entries are quite entertaining... as well as informative. His entry yesterday was about a series of 4 new IBM commercials that were recently launched. Since I rarely watch TV these days, I had Willie give me the URL so I could watch them. They are entertaining!
The overall message is that IBM can help other people / companies win at innovation, so "Stop Talking, Start Doing".
The URL that I have is on an internal IBM website... so for IBMers, here are the four commercials. For the rest of you... try watching more TV to see these ads! I'll post them here if I find them on an external site.
Message: Talking about innovation is great. A manager giving a presentation quickly discovers that doing innovation is better.
Message: There’s nothing wrong with “ideating” a few “out-of-the-box” ideas. But if that’s all you’re doing to innovate, then, well...“good luck,” as one astute businessman puts it.
Message: A business guy is tasked with “firing up” the troops for innovation. Innovation is good. But what about implementation?
Message: A company embraces the trappings of innovation. They create a special room where people can come to innovate. Now what?
