Copy new Remotes or even the entire PARMFILE with IBM Sterling Connect:Direct for z/OS Secure Plus

Technical Blog Post

Abstract

Copy new Remotes or even the entire PARMFILE with IBM Sterling Connect:Direct for z/OS Secure Plus.

Body

Have you ever wanted to:

Replicate similar Secure+ settings for many Remotes?

Or

Make a copy of your entire PARMFILE to use on a test or another production system?

If so, then Cloning the PARMFILE may be for you. The Clone function can be used 2 ways:

Copy settings from an existing Remote node to a new name. This creates a single new Remote node in the same PARMFILE.

When used like this, you can have a 'template' node with your commonly used settings already filled in. Just customize, give it a new name, and you have a new node.

  1. Enter 'CL' in front of the Remote node you wish to copy from.
  2. You cannot clone an Alias type node.
  3. Assign a unique 'Node Name' and make changes if desired.
  4. Reply OK to accept the new node.
  5. Repeat for each new Remote node.
  6. When all nodes are complete, do a 'Save As' or 'Save Active' to make the PARMFILE changes permanent.

Clone the entire PARMFILE. This creates a copy of your VSAM PARMFILE.

At the end of this process, you will have the original unmodified PARMFILE, and a new VSAM PARMFILE with a different Local node defined.

This is useful if you want a test version of your production PARMFILE. It could also be used to rollout the same PARMFILE information to many production systems.

A Local node clone converts the Local node into a Remote node, retains all the settings from the original Local node, and creates a new Local node name. This allows for quick and easy replication of a PARMFILE. It requires the 'Save As' function which is automatically selected. Care should be taken when performing a Local node clone; there are several points throughout the process where you can cancel the function.

Clone the entire PARMFILE as follows:

  1. Use the 'CL' line command on the Local node.
  2. Reply OK to the Local Record Clone prompt.
  3. Enter a new Local 'Node Name' on the Create/Update Panel and reply OK.
  4. Reply OK to the Local Record Clone prompt.
  5. Enter a new PARMFILE name as the output Parm File.
  6. Enter a new ACCESS name as the Access File.
  7. Press Enter to continue.
  8. Verify the 'Save As' JCL statements are correct.
  9. Select 1, 2, or 3 for Browse, Edit, or Submit.
  10. Reply OK to the Confirmation prompt before the submit. Allow JOB to run with RC=00.
  11. PF3 to End out of the 'Save As' screen until you are back at the Main Screen.
  12. If you want to make further changes to the new PARMFILE, you may open it and make changes. When you are ready to use the new PARMFILE, change the SECURE.DSN in the Init Parms of the target system to reference the newly created VSAM PARMFILE.
