Abstract

Too Much Information

Body

In an earlier blog posting I explained many of reasons support requests log files or network packet traces. Included in that posting was a discussion of providing too much data so here's a deeper dive on that topic. A large amount of data can take repeated efforts to successfully download:

After finally downloading the file and unzipping it, all the log files have the same "Date Modified" on them. In order to isolate the ones from the day/time of the reported effort I have to look at the SI date stamp "D201703xx" and look for the "xx" of the reported date of the issue and delete the rest.

Alternately - one could search all the logs and then ignore errors for dates other than the one in question (such as the following which was 10 days prior to the reported issue)

However, a more expeditious way would have been to include just the logs from the date/time of the occurrence - you save yourself time in uploading them and save support time in downloading/reviewing them - resulting in a quicker time to resolution of your issue.
