Internet of Things (IOT), Big Data and even Cognitive Analytics are the technology buzzwords presently. College students are embracing IOT with Big Data and coding applications that interface with sensors in their projects. With proliferation of Mobile and Social technologies, startups and born-on-cloud vendors are seriously interested in Big Data and Analytics and now Cognitive Analytics to give them the edge over others in this competitive digital world.
By 2030, 60% of population will be living in cities. Governments around the world are working with advisors, consultants and technology providers to build smart cities. From smart grid to intelligent water systems. From smart building to intelligent campus. From smart public safety to intelligent transport system. From social service that cares to voice of citizens/residents. With overwhelming adoption of social media and mobile gadgets, citizens and residents not only contribute to the explosion of digital data but also being the voice and sensor for data collection.
Changing technology is making impact to the acceleration of building smart cities. Great smart city plan has to be supported by nurturing skills to build these cities of the next era - sensing technology, urban systems integration and their visualizations plus analysis, quantitative methods, programming and spatial data collection. Web 3.0, Social and Mobile Technology, Analytics, IT Security are essential baseline technologies. These are not all, embracing IOT, understand Big Data and Cloud, leverage on Cognitive Intelligence. These are technologies to accelerate building of smart cities and definitely a wide range of them. This is when partnering among the know-how players are the new way to collaborate for success.
Technology does play a crucial role and an important success factor. However, Smarter Cities cannot achieve what they are planned for without strong leaders and his/her execution team. Building skills in current or future workforce to equip with the necessary thinking and tools is one mission that nations are starting to place as one of the top priorities.
