Well, this weekend we had a kids day out and I brought "Smarties" to the gig. Of course, the children all love them (I do too -- especially the "extreme sour" and "tropical" flavors.) My daugther Cassie asked me a great question. She said "Mommy if I eat lots of these, I will get extra smart, right?" of course hoping that by saying that, she would get to eat the whole bag!
I too wish there was a smart pill. Well, of course for me a Smart SOA pill!
And this is what we tried to do with our Oct 3 2007 announcement. Leverage the "Smarts" of our over 5700 customers using our SOA offerings to help others customers with a smarter approach to SOA. This Smarter SOA approach has a couple of central pillars of Smart SOA are:* There is a continuum of styles from basic to advanced for pursuing SOA projects. * All styles require simplicity and robustness regardless of how simple or advanced they are * Recognition that today’s choices have consequences for tomorrow. As business needs evolve, the systems deployed for today’s needs will have to stand up to tomorrow’s demands.
The SOA Continuum has 4 styles in it: 1. Foundational for the small, department based approach, 2. Extend End to End for those customers who are ready to take their integration further internally and externally, 3. Transform - for those customers transforming their businesses at an enterprise level and 4. Adapt dynamically - allowing the predictive nature of IT to meet business needs.
Read more about it in our brochure.....Click to download the launch brochure. Our announcements of new and enhanced products and offerings are many!
So here I'll highlight just a few!For the foundational area..the SOA Sandbox!
Play with the SOA Sandbox
It is a low risk, practical, hands-on way to get started with SOA! And get this. It is a free place for developers and architects to go for full version software trials or ‘Try online’ hosted environments. In addition to the free code, it has Quick start guide; Solution cookbooks; Demos; Decision guides; Architectural guidance; Technical whitepapers; Sample SOA applicationNote: the following products are made available for trial in the Sandbox: – Tools– Rational Software Architect – WebSphere Integration Developer – Rational Tester for SOA Quality– Runtimes (Note: the runtimes are included via the embedded unit test environment)– WebSphere Application Server – WebSphere ESB – WebSphere Process Server – WebSphere Portal – WebSphere Adapters
There are more foundational announcements....including the extension of Web 2.0 with SOA...I'll blog on that tomorrow!!!
For the more advanced function, we are talking about Process Integrity! After completing their initial SOA projects, companies will almost inevitably start quickly thinking about how to incorporate the principles of SOA into their enterprise architectures. Companies will need to leverage their IT to provide strategic advantage and to support business model innovation. In order to do this, IT will need to take advantage of reusable business services that can be quickly used to build new solutions to support rapidly changing business needs.
What is it? Process Integrity is the degree to which loosely coupled systems based on SOA can deliver the mission-critical performance of traditional, tightly coupled systems. We have leveraged its years of experience building robust computing systems to deliver an SOA portfolio that can provide unmatched reliability, scalability and security across a wide range of services. This seamless synchronization across the different services, human tasks, information sources and users is key to providing support for critical business processes.
> Play with the SOA Sandbox Process integrity covers several specific aspects of the SOA environment focused on the integrity of transactions, interactions and information. Process integrity also focuses on the key aspects of security and quality of service.Transaction integrity is the ability for both long and short-running transaction to execute consistently and recover when necessary. Interaction integrity is the ability to provide users with access to the information and content they need - when and where they need it. WebSphere Portal is key to providing this interaction integrity.Information integrity focuses on the reliability, completeness and manageability of the information that flows through the SOA environment. Information integrity is supported by the enhanced IBM Information Server.Security enhancements that support process integrity have been made to Tivoli Federated Identity Manager and the WebSphere DataPower Security Gateway.
These are 2 highlights of our announcements and there will be many many more to come!
Let me know your thoughts and how you like our announcements!
I'll post the highlighted press clips and more announcements! I am headed to Canada now for a Retail Commerce Summit!! See ya soon! Sandy

This is in honor of the great job done by the US Air pilot and crew and to the Ferry and rescuers. As a frequent flier, I was very thankful for their courage and safety awareness. Thank you!!!
For our SOA reference today, we will focus on Atlas Air, who is the world’s largest cargo airline and the world’s largest fleet operator of Boeing 747s.
Over the past several years, Atlas Air’s operations had become increasingly complex and process-intensive. Its infrastructure was also complicated, comprising a variety of “homegrown” messaging applications that did not integrate well with its back-end systems.
Atlas Air needed to simplify this infrastructure and coordinate the various moving parts, and it decided to do so by implementing a middleware solution that was based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). They replaced their existing messaging system with a true enterprise service bus (ESB) through which all messages flow.
They now have the ability to integrate real-time information with process workflows, improving efficiency, reducing costs and enhancing their ability to respond rapidly to customer needs.
As many of you know, AirBus is also a big SOA client reference![Read More]
OK! So IBM made some major SOA announcements this week!
The first one is around the business value IBM's customers are seeing in the marketplace! Customers are looking to break out of verticalized pillars and drive innovation and flexibility into their businesses. The recent deep dive study by the Institute for Business Value confirms that customers are achieving hard, measurable value from their SOA projects. While 97% of surveyed customers justified undertaking their SOA projects based on cost reduction after they initiated their projects, 100% of them saw increases in flexibility and 51% saw measurable revenue increases attributable to the projects.
The second announcement is about how easy and perscriptive we are making it to "GET STARTED". The announcements today are about making it easier to achieve real business value with SOA. These announcements follow the earlier announcements we made in April of a set of SOA entry points to help businesses get started with SOA. Now, with the marketing moving past that early adoption stage, we have seen a focus on ensuring that customers can build upon the lessons they’ve learned for greater business value. This is a unified IBM is leading the way, teaming with virtually every part of the company to help customers achieve higher value SOA with initiatives such as Business Services and Business Process Management enabled by SOA. We combine all our strengths to help our customers support these projects through Infrastructure and Management for SOA and help ensure successful projects with proper SOA Governance.
And the third area is around the market momentum in this space we've seen! Wintergreen just last month an independent report from Wintergreen Research (“SOA Market Opportunity, Market Forecast and Market Strategies: 2006-2012”) and found that IBM is the overwhelming leader in SOA, with 46 percent market share (up 12% ), more than three times the market share of the next closest vendor.
As Dwight Davis, lead analyst for OvumSummit, wrote in another recent report, IBM is "currently setting a SOA bar that other vendors will struggle to clear."[Read More]

I love flowers! I love Valentine's day partially due to the flowers I receive!
My colleague Georgina Castanon has taken some amazing pictures of flowers! Check them out!
So of course, one of my favorite references, is 1-800-Flowers.com. To realize its vision of synergy among its 14 brands and meet ambitious growth goals, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, INC.—the world’s largest florist and gift shop—is deploying a new e-commerce solution. Running on System p servers, WebSphere Commerce (built on SOA) is the singular front end for all the eCommerce sites and WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Message Broker comprise an enterprise service bus that through service orientation, coordinates messaging and integration between WebSphere Commerce and the company’s disparate back-end systems.
The solution makes it easy to launch (and less expensive to maintain) new eCommerce sites, in weeks rather than months – or even years. The solution enables more rapid creation and deployment of retail Web sites, allowing 1-800-FLOWERS.COM to try out new offerings with very little investment and risk.
It also facilitates cross-selling between brands by unifying the underlying technology. The solution provides the potential for information sharing across business units, opening up the possibility for more effective marketing to customers.
It also provides a rich, differentiated customer experience with reduced maintenance and development costs.
I hope my hubbie tries it out again!!![Read More]

I love shopping! I like the hunt for a bargain, the thrill of getting great quality and the fun of haning out with friends while we hunt!
Yansha is part of my fun of shopping in China! Yansha is one of China’s largest regional retailers. An upscale brand with revenues in the billions of Yuan each year they sell high-end, exclusive goods from brands such as Versace, Prada and Calvin Klein. In order to maintain its market leadership position, they needed to increase its competitiveness against both local retailers and new foreign competitors in an increasingly deregulated Chinese retail industry.
Yansha saw that the best way forward was to transform the way it does business with its supply chain partners through the adoption of new business processes, automation and business intelligence. Yansha deployed a first-of-its-kind supply chain management (SCM) platform that leverages SOA to integrate enterprise resource planning (ERP) and SCM applications. The platform enables Yansha and its suppliers to leverage new real-time performance information to provide transparency into supply chain business processes and generate actionable business intelligence, setting new standards of efficiency.
With the SOA solution, they have reduced order lead time from 2.5 days to 4.5 hours, improved order acknowledgement rate from 80 to 99 percent, and reduced order error rate from nine to one percent. All of this was done with a nine month ROI.

Yes, I have now lived in NY for 4 years! Coming from Texas, I don't think I have ever thawed out! And definitely not this year with the temperatures falling daily!
My SOA reference today is the Bank of New York Mellon (BNY Mellon), the world’s largest securities servicing provider. If you remember, back in 2007, it was formed through the merger between The Bank of New York Company, Inc. and Mellon Financial Corporation of Pittsburgh.
We saw something then, that we are seeing now which is the new entity, BNY Mellon, needed to integrate the operations of the two organizations—including their cultures, business processes and technology infrastructures. Equally important, the company needed an IT solution that would take into account the complex and rapidly changing nature of financial services and deliver the flexibility needed to support the bank’s business strategies as they evolved.
A driver of SOA value today is mergers. Merging two complex IT infrastructures in a dynamic business environment is an ideal setting for a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach .
The company started its SOA journey by employing shared, reusable IT services as a primary strategy for achieving its stated objectives. Through the use of shared services, the bank can integrate disparate systems, processes and data, and streamline the resulting operations for maximum efficiency.
By taking a services-based approach to its integration needs, the bank has been able to hone in on application details, which has allowed the elimination of extraneous or redundant components. Taking time at the outset to clearly define its principles and standards has helped the bank ensure that future development efforts will support the company’s present and future business strategies and objectives.

China is one of my favorite places in the world. It has an energy and hope that you can feel the second you step off the plane!
I just received a report that Gartner did on Coscon, a shipping company in China, how they have deployed SOA and their learnings. Coscon undertook an SOA intitiatve to rationalize its core port operation systems and improve overall business agility and responsiveness.
They learnings they shared were:
* Linking IT and Business together. Early on!
* Ensure availability of technical staff and skill (in fact, skills are one of the most important areas for customers!)
* Include senior business analysts

So we had several votes for our painting for SOA ....... and the winner is....yes, I asked you guys to vote. This was my favorite entry!
"As much as I like Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, I hope those CIO's didn't pick it as Starry Night was painted in 1889 near the mental asylum of Saint-Remy, in, as it turns out, 13 months before his death....
SOA is on its way up and the limit doesn't seem to be in site... So that would make Piet Mondrain's "Broadway Boogie Woogie" (the yellow line one) the best choice. As Mondrain wanted the "...infinitely extendable, and the open-ended space..." that "...stretches far beyond its borders..." as told by David Sylvester about Piet Mondrain.
While (still) sitting here pondering life in the rain, I saw Elisabeth's blog! and the latest review of the InfoWorld SOA day! http://www.ebizq.net/blogs/archives/2006/05/ebizq_audio_pod.php
I head to London on Monday for the SOA Summit there. Will post in my best british accent!
I was very excited to see IBM's 3Q earnings yesterday. Due to the great acceptance and use of our SOA offerings, the 3Q results were good. Here are some of the quotes I pulled from Mark Lockridge's discussion to the financial analysts! (Mark is IBM's CFO).
To all our IBM partners and customers -- Thank you for your trust and confidence in us and our portfolio!
Some highlights:"In 2006, WebSphere technology has accelerated the emergence and acceptance of Services Oriented Architecture, contributing to double-digit revenue growth in WebSphere each quarter. IBM’s lead in SOA is well recognized and we are continuing to invest to extend our leadership position."
The WebSphere family of software grew 30 percent, and 28 percent at constant currency.WebSphere provides the foundation for web-enabled applications and is a key product set in deploying a client’s Services Oriented Architecture.
In July, we introduced DB2 version 9, commonly referred to as Viper, with enhanced XML and data compression technologies. This new database is a key component of our SOA and Information on Demand strategies and has proven to be particularly effective in SAP installations.
We are continuing to invest in high value-add Business Solutions. For example, we are enhancing our Global Development Center capabilities in China and India to leverage our Webify acquisition, and to accelerate SOA within our Industry solutions.
Security, energy and cooling efficiency, virtualization, and SOA, together with improved economics, continue to play to the strength of System z. These features are attracting new mainframe customers to this platform. Let me give you a couple of examples:
The largest profit contributor was our Software business. This quarter, our software results once again reflected strong demand for products deploying Services Oriented Architectures and Information on Demand, as well as the value of our systems management, security, and storage offerings.[Read More]

I love my iPhone. My husband would say it is my best friend! I use the iPhone apps from it to see the movie times, the weather (yes all that snow up here in the NE!), and even work!! (If you know of great iPhone apps please let me know!!) So it is exciting to see mobile providers using SOA to even provide more capabilities!
mBlox, the world’s largest mobile transaction network, enables businesses to deliver mobile services and content around the world. Specializing in global operator connectivity and mobile billing, mBlox maintains connections to more than 500 mobile operators in over 180 countries through its carrier-grade network. With the increasing maturity and standardisation of the mobile messaging market, mBlox wanted to simplify its IT platform to deliver greater efficiencies, accelerate speed-to-market, and reduce the costs of change.
Replacing its custom-developed billing system with an off-the-shelf solution and integrating it across the enterprise was a first priority. mBlox built a service-oriented architecture around 3rd party billing and accounting software.
The services are orchestrated by IBM WebSphere Process Server and surfaced through an IBM WebSphere Portal server front-end. The solution was created using a suite of IBM Rational requirements management and software development tools. Billing runs that used to take up to 10 days can now be completed within just 36 hours. Process-driven service-oriented architecture enables rapid development of new applications by reusing and orchestrating existing components, allowing mBlox to set up services for new mobile carriers within half a day.
