Retailers have hundreds or perhaps thousands of geographically distributed stores. Each store contains an array of applications and point-of-sale (POS) terminals as well as devices, which may include printers, kiosks, and more. Monitoring these assets is a complex problem. Typically, the retail stores have little or no IT experience, and the management of all of the stores is done from a central enterprise location. WebSphere Remote Server (WRS) and IBM Tivoli Monitoring components can help you answer questions such as the following:
Is the POS application running? Is the POS application running well? How many transactions are being processed (and how long does each one take)? How many POS terminals are online? Are the printers out of paper? Are the kiosks being used frequently? How much CPU and RAM is available to my in-store servers? Is the database responding quickly to requests?
Here is a link to a reference implementation of end to end monitoring for Retail environments using Tivoli Monitoring (ITM), Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC), IBM Remote Management Agent (RMA) and IBM Retail environment for SUSE Linux (IRES).
Note: All of these components aligns to the IBM Store Integration Framework and/or components of WebSphere Remote Server.
