Release 7 of Maqetta is now available! Maqetta is an open source project that provides WYSIWYG visual authoring of HTML5 user interfaces (desktop and mobile). It runs in the browser without any additional plug-ins or downloads. Maqetta allows UI designers to perform drag/drop assembly of live UI mockups with the goal of facilitating hand-off to developers.
The latest release has more significant changes than any release since our first in April 2011, so you should definitely check it out. Some of the major highlights are listed below, but please see the release notes for full details. In addition, you should check out the refreshed online documentation:
User Interface MakeoverProbably, the most noticeable thing about Release 7 is the major UI makeover done as part of our continued focus on usability. If you're an existing Maqetta user, the screenshot below is meant to whet your appetite for what you'll see when you try Release 7, but there were a ton of improvements that you really need to go try for yourself.
Eclipse Orion integrationWhile the changes won't be apparent to most users, Release 7 includes major changes to more completely integrate Maqetta with the Eclipse Orion open source project. The one notable addition this made to the user interface is the ability to launch the Orion Navigator from the Open menu. This opens a new browser window containing the Eclipse Orion cloud-based source development tools where you can perform source editing in the cloud on the various files within your Maqetta workspace:
HTML table enhancementsHTML tables are extremely powerful not only to display information in a tabular format, but also as one option for achieving tabular layout of user interface components. However, they can also be very complex to set-up. With Release 7, we've taken steps to hide this complexity from UI designers. Along with improvements to the ability to add/remove/resize rows and columns, a new table configuration dialog is now available:
Tree widget enhancementsWith Release 7, we have greatly enhanced the dialog that appears when creating or editing a Tree widget. This dialog now allows users to:
Upgrade to Dojo 1.8, more mobile widgetsRelease 7 supports the latest release of Dojo (version 1.8) and includes support for a number of new Dojo Mobile widgets. New mobile widgets include:
Save As WidgetWith Release 7, we have added a "Save As Widget" command on the dropdown menu next to the Save button on the toolbar. This command will create a re-usable widget out of the currently selected widget, and add a new widget into a "User Widgets" section of the widgets palette. This feature allows a Maqetta user to create custom re-usable components that can be used in multiple places within his user interfaces.
