This is the kick off entry for my first blog ever. I chose U^3 (U cubed) as the title because to me it embodies the three most important principles of design/user experience: Usefulness, usability and utilization. That and I really like alliteration as a writing tool. My goal with this blog is to get my ideas down so I can organize my thoughts on design, user experience (UX), user research and in general, get some practice writing so I can get work on my writing skill set as well getting to do a some HTML and CSS work. My background is in Psychology with a specialization in Human factors psychology with a concentration in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). I want to start my blog by building a foundation or a framework of how I think and write to help better communicate to my readers. My focus in HCI is in web and software UX specifically so you have a sense of the direction I am going. To get things going I want to define these three concepts to have a common vocabulary and further discuss these terms and their relationships to each other in regards to user experience and user research.
1. Usefulness in the field of User experience (UX) is a must have. If a design is useful it supports a user goal or goals. In nutshell a design has to have a purposeUser research is helpful in determining the first two terms. Early marketing research with focus groups or surveys can do wonders to determine if a design concept has a need in the market. Is there a tool need to help users complete a goal or is there a need for this type of information to your users. Testing a design’s usability can be done in a myriad ways: Usability tests, design walk-throughs, heuristic evaluations, etc. Finally Utilization can be measured with product sells or with simple web metrics like page views, registrations, downloads etc. As, I continue writing this blog I want to cover the three U's in more depth, as well as, touch on different ideas and concepts that I find interesting. Hopefully you will find this blog useful, usable and utilized (U^3)
