Given my work focus is in the general area of emerging technology and open standards, I decided a week ago to try and move 100% to using Lotus Symphony for all of my day to day office suite needs. This includes working with spreadsheets, documents and presentations. Symphony can also display web pages. I like the way Symphony arranges each document by tabs rather than in separate windows. Thus far I have run into a few nits that I have shared with the developers but all in all, I have to say, so far so good. I have started creating all new content that I produce (ie from scratch) in the Open Document Format (ODF) and am encouraging my colleagues to do the same. Symphony can also export to other formats as needed. More and more within IBM, we are sharing ODF format documents with each other. You can also generate PDFs directly from Symphony, That said, Symphony so far has also done a good job for me of importing files from Microsoft Office and letting me work with them. I am using Symphony on 1.3
on both my Mac and Windows machines.
It's a free download from the Symphony web page
if you also feel like giving it a go. I plan to blog more about the things I like and things that could be better as I play with it more. Meanwhile I have some documents to edit......
