OASIS has announced to its members the receipt of a draft charter for a TC to work on taking WS-Federation to OASIS standard. This is great news. I posted earlier today about WS-Trust and WS-SecureConversation recently becoming OASIS Standards. WS-Federation builds upon those specs and the WS-Security spec (all OASIS Standards). There now begins a comment period that lasts until April 2nd during which time OASIS Members can comment on the proposed charter. Hopefully soon after that the TC can officially form and commence work.
A few years ago, we published a document here on developerWorks that we referred to as the Web Services Security Roadmap. The document described the composable specs that would be needed over time to build a large variety of applications with differing security needs on top of the Web Services base. The specifications described included WS-Security, WS-Trust, WS-SecureConversation, WS-SecurityPolicy and WS-Federation. The first three are all now OASIS Standards and WS-SecurityPolicy is getting close to being one. With the arrival of WS-Federation, all of the specs will have found a standards organization home at OASIS. It's great to see the last major piece of that puzzle falling into place.
