Well, it's that time of year again. While every corporate blogger waits for their employer to release last year's earning report, we are forced to find other things to write about that comply within [corporate "black-out" rules].
In the past, I used this black-out period to publish my [New Year's Resolutions] in this blog. In 2010, I took a different approach. I decided NOT to publicize my resolutions to see if that allowed me to stick to them better. Derek Sivers cites research recommending you should [Keep your Goals to Yourself]. For a bit of nostalgia, here is a [recap of my previous resolutions].

In addition to being a technical consultant for IBM, I am also a certified yoga instructor with formal training. Back in 2004, I co-founded the Tucson Laughter Club, based on [Hasya yoga], a form of yoga that incorporates breathing, stretching and laughter exercises. The two jobs are actually similar, in which I am standing in front of a group of people, telling them what to do and how to do it.
January is the month where gyms and yoga classes are filled with new students who have made New Year's Resolutions. Every time I am asked "What should I do to lose weight, get fit, and sleep better?"
(Note: I am neither a medical doctor nor registered dietician. I can share with you ideas that have worked for me (or my yoga students) that might help you achieve your goals. I strongly suggest you read books and consult with medical experts as necessary.)
I always tell them the same answer. But first, I make them promise they won't share the secret with anyone, and that I will whisper it in their ear. After I get their nod of agreement, I whisper "Eat Less and Exercise More."
I get the same quizzical look every time. The response is typically "That's your big secret? Everyone knows that!" If that's true, why are nearly a third of all Americans obese, out-of-shape, and/or sleep-deprived? The answer is the knowing-doing gap.
Jeff Pfeffer and Bob Sutton explain this concept in their book [The Knowing-Doing Gap: How Smart Companies Turn Knowledge into Action]. I have read this book, and highly recommend it. People know what they need to do, but are not doing it. If you don't have time to read the book, here is an [8-page summary] from Harvard Business School Press.
While the book is focused on why businesses fail to achieve their goals, I think many of the principles apply to individuals trying to reach their health goals:

I hope everyone was able to take some time to reflect during the past few weeks. I was able to take the past two weeks off from IBM, so that I could spend some time doing things I enjoy, like...
Sadly, you get back from two weeks out, and you get slapped in the face with 341 unread emails. I am hopeful that 2010 will prove to be better than 2009.
Last Friday, I helped students learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). This was the annual [2015 Arizona STEM Adventure] event in Tucson, Arizona. This year, Pima Community College Northwest Campus provided the venue.
The event hosted more than 900 students, ranging from fourth to eighth graders. Buses collected them from 31 schools across seven cities and towns in the Tucson area. Home-schooled, private-schooled and charter-schooled children participated as well.
I was just one of 130 volunteers. IBM, [Raytheon], [Pima Community College], [Agents of STEM], [SARSEF, [StemAZing], [Office of Pima County School Superintendent], [UA Stem Learning Center], and other individuals volunteered their time to make this happen.
As I arrived, students lined up to ride this "hover chair". A lawn-blower motor floated a chair attached to a platform. A blue tarp represented water. Volunteers would pull the hover chair across the tarp, giving the kids a fun ride. I wanted to ride it myself, but it was not engineered for my body weight!
Students chose among the most interesting of 50 exhibits. IBM led two of these exhibits.
First, we had the [Bike Wheel Gyroscope]. The students would stand on a rotating swivel platform, holding a spinning bicycle wheel. When the student tipped the wheel left or right, the students body would rotate on the platform!
Second, we had Share with Storyboarding. This is the one I volunteered for. IMHO, the best part of STEM is the Arts and Design aspect needed to make products usable. Perhaps we should rename STEM to STEAM to add "A" for Arts and Design.
We held six 30-minute sessions with each group of students. Our team lead, Brenton Elmore, IBM Design Principal, explained what storyboards are, and then gave the students five topics to choose from:
Children paired up in two-person teams based on their topic interest. Why teams? Many creative collaborations involve the strengths of different teammates. For example, an author and an illustrator work together to create a comics or children's book. Broadway musicals often have a writer and composer.
Each team spent 10 minutes to draw a six-panel storyboard on [Post-it notes]. These would be stuck to a single sheet of paper. The team then would write underneath each panel the narrative of what was occurring.
Brenton taped five or six of these to the wall to share with the rest of the class. Each team would then explain to the other students what they drew, and the narrative to go with it.
When there were an odd number of students, one of us volunteers paired up with a student. Shown here is Marilynn Franco, IBM Manager, helping young Bailey in explaining their storyboard. I helped young Lili with her storyboard about a new mobile phone app idea she had.
Storyboards are an essential part of IBM's [Design Thinking]. We use them in a variety of ways, from designing business strategies and product enhancements, to creating videos about the [IBM Tucson Executive Briefing Center]!
When I make presentations to clients at briefings or conferences, I use 36 slides per hour. Each PowerPoint slide serves like a storyboard panel, and I provide the narrative on each one.

I was afraid IBM was going to pile up all the announcements on one day at Edge next week, so I am glad that our new General Manager, Jamie Thomas, has agreed to spread them out a bit. Last week, IBM [announced new SAN Volume Controller and Storwize models], and yesterday, IBM [announced Elastic Storage].
Today is all about the [enhancements to the IBM System Storage DS8870], one of IBM's Enterprise-class high-end disk systems.

Well, it's Wednesday! Normally, IBM makes its announcements on Tuesday's, but this week that landed on the 13th, and some people are superstitious, so we pushed it back to today. Today, IBM announced an exciting new addition to the IBM System Storage™ product line, [IBM Spectrum Storage™], a family of software defined storage offerings.
To understand its significance, I need to explain a few things first. Software defined storage is part of a larger concept of software defined environment.
How is software defined environment different than what you have now? In every data center, you need to map business requirements of an application workload with an appropriate set of IT infrastructure, including server, network and storage resources.
The traditional approach involves an application owner or database administrator reviewing the business requirements documented for the application, calling the server, network and storage administrators, who match those requirements to appropriate IT hardware and notify the folks in facilities to rack and stack the gear accordingly.
In a software defined environment, Application Programming Interfaces (API), Service Level Agreements (SLA) and Orchestration workflows can automate the request for the appropriate resources. This is referred as the "Control Plane".
Responding to these requests, the software can provision the appropriate server, network and storage resources required. Server, network and storage virtualization, standard interfaces and deployment technologies exist to make this practical. This is referred to as the "Data Plane".
Any time new a way of doing things is introduced into the world, there could be some resistance. Let's tackle the three most frequently stated objections:

(Nostalgia: I remember the days before self-service automation. At the bank, I had to stand in line at the bank until I could to talk to a human bank teller to get cash from my savings account. At the gas station, human gas attendants would come out and pump the gas for me, check my oil and wash my windshield. And at a restaurant, I felt like I waited an eternity from the time I ordered my meal to the time the human short-order cook had it ready and human wait staff delivered it to my table. These all seem silly today, doesn't it?)

Many often associate CAS with EMC's Centera offering, but with IBM's comprehensive set of compliance storageofferings, EMC doesn't talk about CAS or Centera much anymore.I covered the confusion around CAS in a previous post. When clients ask for "CAS" what they really are looking for is storage designed forfixed content, unstructured data that doesn't change once written. A lot of data falls under this category, such as scanned documents, audio and video recordings, medical images, and so on. Some laws and regulations further require enforcement that the data is not deleted or tampered with, until some time after an event or expiration date is met.
In the past, clients used write-once read-many (WORM) optical media, but today we have disk and tape offerings instead. Since the term "WORM" is inappropriate fordisk-based solutions, IBM has standardized to the use of the term "non-erasable, non-rewriteable" (NENR) to discusstoday's solutions and offerings.

Our leadership in tape allows us to innovate tape and disk-and-tape offerings that can provide more cost-effective solutions to store fixed content, retention managed data.The next time you have a conversation with a storage vendor, don't ask for CAS, ask instead for archive and compliance storage. Broaden your mind, and broaden the set of options and choices that might provide a better fit for your requirements.

Today,Apple and EMI announced that EMI’s entire music and video catalog will be available in May without any digital rights management (DRM) protection.Not only with the music be higher quality, but can be played on any player, presumably using MP3 format instead ofApple's proprietary AAC format. Being locked into any single vendor solution is undesirable. Similar issues abound for Microsoft Office 2007 file formats.
On my iPod, I ripped all my CDs into MP3 format, not AAC. I love my iPod, but if I ever decided to chose a different MP3 player, I did not want to go through the time-consuming process or re-ripping them again.
A blog by Seth Godin feels this Apple-EMI announcement means thatDRM is dead.
Back when music labels added value by producing and distributing music in physical form, it made sense for them to take a cut. Mass-producing CDs and distributing them out to music stores across the country costs lots of money. However, for online music, music labels don't have these same overhead costs, but continue the process of paying the artists only a few pennies per dollar. Some artists have file lawsuits to get their fair share.
