SAP HANA is an in-memory, relational database management system supported on Linux for x86 and POWER servers. The "HANA" acronym is short for "High-Performance Analytic Appliance" software. By keeping the data in memory, analytics and queries can be performed much faster than from traditional disk repositories.
Server memory, however, is volatile storage, so the data needs to be stored on persistent storage such as flash or disk drives. SAP has certified several configurations, some involve IBM Spectrum Scale solutions. I will use the following graphic to explain the three configurations.
Other combinations, such as SAP HANA on POWER with Spectrum Scale FPO, or on x86-64 servers with Elastic Storage Serer, are either not SAP-certified, or not directly supported by SAP without their approval.
IBM and SAP have worked closely together for many years, and I am glad to see SAP HANA and IBM Spectrum Scale based solutions continue this tradition.
IBM has bundled our midrange DS4000 disk with SAN networking switch in a convenient 42U-high rack, and nicknamed thisSAN-in-a-can.

Continuing my theme on naming conventions, this time I will talk about finding information.
Industry analysts estimate that information workers spend as much as 30 percent of their working day just looking for information they need, as mentioned in an interview withJeff Teper, Microsoft.A second study of middle managers found similar results, and is discussed in Information Architecture andDM Review.
Take for example looking for information on a specific person. If you were searching for"Barack Obama" or "Lulit Shiferaw", then perhaps you will find exactly the person you werelooking for.
On the other hand, some names are more common. I've met my share of people named John Smith, Jennifer Jones,or Mark Johnson. While PEARSON does not even make the top 100 list of family names here in the US, it isstill fairly common.
People looking for me may realize that I am notHead of Australian Economics at ANZ Bank, author of the book "Don't Read This!", winner of the Killam Teaching Prize, or owner offisheries in Essex.While I do work out at the gym on a regular basis, I look nothing like thisfamous body builder. There are several others, but I pickedjust a few to make my point.
At this time, there is only one "Tony Pearson" working at IBM. A while back, there was a second,a woman who spelled her name "Toni" with an "i" at the end. Her job involved deploying storage on AIX platforms,and was similar enough job description to mine that we would get each other's mail, and sometimes not realize it was meant for the other.
Dan Santow of Word Wise talks about the difficulties of proper names withaccent marks.This would make searching worse, but many search tools can handle this, stripping off allaccent marks to make the comparisons.
But what if you wanted to leave those accent marks in, for an exact match?

It's official. Last week,while I was talking about Fundamental Changes needed to make your IT environmentmore energy-efficient, IBM announced its "Big Green Linux" initiative at LinuxWorld conference.
IT managers looking to reduce their energy consumption are probably closely watching XenSource and VMware. CRN feels that a war is imminent between these two. Eweek recognizes thisbattle is bad news for Linux virtualization on x86,and that Oracle is losing patienceon their inability to work together. Simon Crosby, CTO of XenSource, compares performance between the two platforms, and feelsthat XenSource should get its rightful piece of the pie.
There is a ray of hope. Charles Babcock in Information Week explains thatpeace has been established on at least one front, XenSource and VMware are working together to improve virtualization in the Linux kernel.
Despite this, or perhaps because of this, over 30 percent of IBM's Linux server revenue is onnon-x86 platforms, avoiding the XenSource vs. VMware decision altogether. Both System z (traditional mainframe servers) and System p (traditional UNIX servers) are able to run many Linux images in a fully virtualized manner, without VMware or XenSource.

A [recent survey] conductedby Fleishman-Hillard Researchindicates that the majority of disk-only customers are now lookingat adding tape back into their infrastructure. Here are some excerpts:
"Over two thirds of surveyed businesses said they were lookingto add tape storage back into their overall network infrastructure and of those respondents, over80-percent plan to add tape storage solutions within the next 12 months.The survey, which was taken in the fourth quarter of 2007, focused on the views of morethan 200 network administrators and mid-level tech specialists at mid-size to large companiesthroughout the United States.
While disk provides online data access and availability, tape provides additional data protectionand security, lower total cost of ownership (TCO), lower energy consumption (Tape is more "green"),and can be an important part of a long term data retention and compliance strategy.
Disk is more costly, more energy hungry, and some data, although it must be retained, may seldom, if ever be looked at, so why keep it spinning?
Speaking of TCO, in a recent 5-year TCO analysis by the Clipper Group titled[“Disk and Tape Square Off Again”]stored 2.4PB of data long term on SATA disk and on an LTO tape library, the disk system was:23:1 more costly, used 290 times the amount of energy than tapeEven with a data dedupe system like IBM System Storage N series, disk was still 5 times more costly than the tape system.
The Linear Tape Open (LTO) consortium --consisting of IBM, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Quantum-- just released its "LTO-5" plans. With 2:1 compression,you will be able to pack up to 3TB of data on a single tape cartridge. And while dollar-per-GB declinefor disk is slowing down to 25-30 percent per year, tape continues to decline at a healthy 40 percent rate, so the price gap between diskand tape will actually widen even further over the next few years.
