I use the java based client, so all my chat's go directly to my mail file, where they should be. Then, each chat can be put to folders. I may talk to someone several times in a day, and each conversation may have different subject matter (client A, client B, internal issue 1, internal issue 2, general chat). I can then place those relevant chat histories into the proper mail folder, so I can quickly find all communications from my organized folder structure, or just full-text search.

Not to diminish the power and importance of this feature, but it's a good example of a way in which Sametime is playing catch up to publically available chat clients (in no small part because it tries to do so much more than chat). Trillian, for instance, has done precisely this for YEARS.

The Sametime Connect client has a chat history feature where you can have it auto save or manually save chats by person. The platform also always full-text search from within the connect client via plug-ins.

As an example: if I'm in a dialog with a peer, and a contract number is referenced, and at a later time I am trying to find all references to that contract number, using Connect I would have to search in two spots, Connect and my mail file.

 
Using the Java client, storing individual chat histories in my mail file, I need only perform one search.
 
Also, many people archive information to CD to be included in work notes. Using Java and the mail file it is very easy to create the archive database. With Connect, there would be the need to have two data stores on the CD, the NSF data and the chat data from Connect.

Jamie, the Notes IM client is not Java you're getting your Java Connect and Notes IM client mixed up.
