How the HAL 9000 could be more "autonomic"
Usually I don't like to hawk zone articles in this blog, but I enjoyed editing (and the authors enjoyed cobbling together) today's HALloween surprise, "Build a HAL 9000 with IBM autonomic computing technology."
It wasn't our intention to "fix" the HAL 9000 from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It wasn't even our intention to show you how to build an AI from IBM autonomic computing technologies (AIs are independent thinking machines; autonomic computing provides system awareness and the ability to respond to events without human interaction). It was our intention to have some fun and describe existing, autonomic computing capabilities using this famous movie (and its misunderstood antagonist) as the framework.
