Can you believe that August is almost over? The end of August is the beginning of a new season for us here at Thoughts from IM Support. And that season is none other than IOD SEASON! Information on Demand is now officially only 75 days away. As we have done for the past several IOD conferences, we'll be running a blog series on key IOD sessions, activities, etc. to help get you ready.
So, without further ado, let's get this blog series going!
We know that when you attend IOD you want to make the most out of every moment -- there really is too much going on to see and do everything. So you have to pick and choose the events and activities that will make the conference the most valuable to you and your business.
Note that you can't create your official agenda until you are registered for the conference. You can save your agenda and import it once you register.
One activity you may want to register for on Tuesday Nov 5 is IBD-2313A: Where is My Big Data? A Hands On Lab with IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer. This lab features our very own technical support expert Mike Pointer, as well as Joseph Kramer and Jean Lange. Here is the description of the lab:
"Sure I have Big Data! I don't know what's in it, but I know it's big and I know it's spread around a bunch of different repositories." A common problem with Big Data is it is so big, you don't know where to start. To help you explore what you have and what to do with it, IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer comes with many different connectors to find your data wherever it exists inside the enterprise. This hands on lab will teach you the basics of integrating IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer into your existing infrastructure so you can explore your data quickly and securely. We will explore data sourced from file systems, IBM DB2, Microsoft SharePoint, and IBM Lotus Domino. This lab will give you what you need to start exploring your Big Data.
Looking forward to seeing you at IOD 2013!

In my last post, I gave you an overview of what is going to happen in the IBM InfoSphere On Demand (IOD) based on my experience last year. I also gave you some suggestions on how to prepare for the event and some tips. I am happy to hear some very good feedback from readers. If you have not had a chance to review it yet, I strongly suggest that you review my last IOD posting before reading this blog post.
Here is the link to my last posting: Getting the most out of IOD 2012
Before you head out to the event, perhaps one week in advance, get in touch with your IBM contacts who will also go to IOD, and make appointments to meet them in person. A lot of IBMers from all over the world will be attending the IOD. For example, product managers will be attending the conference, because this is a good chance for them to meet with IBM customers face to face. IBMers in professional services, sales and tech sales and product executives will also be attending the conference.
Don't wait until the last minute to make those appointments. Last year there were over 11,000 attendees in IOD. People will be very busy in the 4 day event, so it will be difficult to find them even if you know their cell phone numbers, especially you may not have stable cell phone services in the venue. It is best to plan ahead.
I usually don't text, but I have done the most texting during last year's IOD, because that was the only way I could connect with my other colleagues at the event.

IBM Information On Demand (IOD) 2012 will be hosted in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas from October 21st through 25th. I hope you will have a chance to attend this exciting event to learn about the products in the IBM Software Group InfoSphere portfolio, and see what we can do to help you and your business compete in today's challenging global economy.
Here is a short overview of the event from my own personal experience, and some suggestions to help you prepare before you head out to the Silver State.
When you first check in to the event, you will be given an agenda booklet with every day's schedule, all of the breakout sessions listed by date/time and categorized by topic of interest, certificate programs, and the map of the venue. I suggest that you attend all of the major keynote sessions, because that will give you a good idea what are the key technologies and IBM solutions you may want to pay attention to throughout the event.
After the major keynote, you may go to any breakout sessions of your choice. IOD provides a conference agenda builder, which helps you search your interested topic and create your own personal agenda to map out the 4-day event. Here is the link to the IOD agenda builder. Simply search for the product and technology of your interest in the "Keyword" text box, then all of the relevant events will be returned. You can also filter by date, or use the other search filters that are available.
Don't miss the dessert (after lunch) and cocktail hour (around 4 or 5 PM) in the Expo area. You can enjoy good food, check out the vendors' booths for demos and network with IBMers and IBM customers and partners. When you are at the Expo, make sure to stop by the IBM Software Subscription & Support, Training Services and Education Hub (booth 832) and the AVP Red Carpet Lounge (booth 534) to receive a free pedometer, and talk to the friendly support experts. They may be able to answer your questions and give you a tip or two. The demo room is another place not to be missed, in which you can find tech sales and IBM services experts to see their latest product demos.
Breakfasts and lunches are other good networking opportunities. IBMers from different organizations sectors such as services, sales, product management, development, technical support, etc, from all over the world will be attending IOD, and they are eager to share their expertise and knowledge with you.
Like Information On Demand on facebook to receive the latest updates. You may also share your pictures and comments about IOD on this facebook page.
Last but not least, please don't miss the concert! It will be fun and entertaining for sure.
Other miscellaneous but important tips:
Watch out for new blog postings coming up on for our support recommended breakout sessions specific to IM products.
