50 DB2 Nuggets #6 : Resource Info - Memory Limitations for DB2 Workgroup Server Restricted License for different versions

Body

Do you know the instance memory limitations for DB2 Workgroup Server Restricted License for different DB2 versions?

First of all, I would like to explain what DB2 Workgroup Server Edition (WSE) Restricted License (db2wse_o.lic) means. Its nothing but that your DB2 database product was obtained as part of another IBM® product. In this case, the license terms of the bundling product takes precedence over the usual DB2 Version Workgroup Server Edition license terms.

The DB2 license command 'db2licm -l' will display the following output:

Product name:                     "DB2 Workgroup Server Edition"
License type:                     "Restricted"
Expiry date:                      "Permanent"
Product identifier:               "db2wse"
Version information:              "9.7"
Max number of Value Units:        "480"
Max amount of memory (GB):        "4"

Prior to 10.5, i.e. 9.5, 9.7 and 10.1, there was agreement between DB2 and other SWG  teams to reduce the memory limit for restricted WSE.  So, for 9.5 and 9.7 the limit is 4GB, for 10.1 is 8GB.  These limits are hard enforced by the restricted WSE license key.

We got rid of this practice in 10.5.  In 10.5,  restricted WSE has the same memory limit as standard WSE, which is 128GB. You cannot go by the standard stand alone WSE limit in DB2 License Terms prior to DB2 10.5.
