db2top shows "backup in progress" state for all tablespaces at the beginning

Technical Blog Post

Abstract

db2top shows "backup in progress" state for all tablespaces at the beginning

Body

Consider for example you have 298 tablespaces and PARALLELISM = 2.

Start an online backup on database. Check the status using db2stop command.

Q : The db2top output shows "backup in progress" state for all 298 tablespaces even if you have only 2 BM's (PARALLELISM 2) doing the work. Is this right ?

A : This behaviour is EXPECTED. Irrespective of the tool used to check (db2top, db2pd etc) at the very beginning of a backup, Db2 sets the status of each tablespace to be backed up to “backup_in_progress” and that state will clear as the db2bm threads finish processing each tablespace, so you can monitor how many tablespaces are left to backup by checking how many still have the “backup_in_progress" flag/status on it.
