What if it became cost effective to analyze data that was too time-sensitive or expensive to analyze in the past? What would that mean to you? As examples, you could more consistently identify new market opportunities before competitors, and be agile enough to respond quickly to changes in the market. This type of capability offers tremendous potential, and would be the start of a new way of doing business. You would be right in the middle of the evolution to a Big Data environment.
So how do you do that? You start with one of the key elements in a Big Data architecture, which is streams processing. That technology is radically transforming the information industry by assembling continuous insights from data in motion, that is, from data that might not have yet been stored. This new technology was developed to handle the issues of high volume, velocity, and variety of data, which are key tenants of big data. The following figure shows the differences between standard data processing of static data versus Streams processing of data in motion.
