An ITSO project leader's perspective on a residency: Setting up Linux on System z for production

My next residency that will be starting on April 2, 2013 is about how to set up a Linux on System z environment for production. I've been really busy examining and clarifying the objectives for this residency. I wanted to make sure I pulled together a team of people that have real world, live customer experiences.
The aim of this residency is to examine the setup of an LPAR using shared CPUs with memory for a production environment and another LPAR that shares some CPUs but also has a dedicated one for production. Running in z/VM mode, it can virtualize servers and based on z/VM shares, it can prioritize and control their resources. The size of the LPAR or z/VM Resources depends on the workload so Im hoping to use a WebSphere Application Server environment and a DB2 environment to calculate the resources for Java workloads and the database workload.
I also want to examine the network decisions that need to be made regarding the use of VSWITCHes, shared OSA or Hipersockets and the Hiperpav, or FCP/SCSI attachment used in conjunction with an SVC storage controller with their associated performance and throughput expectations.
Some of the topics I would like this team to explore are things like, how do you size the z/VM environment itself? How do you decide on Linux guests and their sizing and what decisions need to be made if you're using a database, a web server and applications - especially Java applications.
Im hoping that this Redbooks publication will show the power of System z Virtualization and flexibility in sharing resources in a flexible production environment!
