Engineers like to take things to extremes. We create things that go higher and faster and things that are bigger and smaller. We can manipulate individual atoms and we can create huge vehicles and structures. Today marks the day that the biggest ship ever created has floated for the first time where is it being built in South Korea. This ship, The Prelude, at 488 meters long is longer than the Empire State building is tall. It will serve as Shell's Floating Natural Gas Facility when it is completed in 2017. As Shell points out, creating something on this scale required great talent for engineering, design, manufacturing, and supply chain. And, they not only have to build at scale, but they still need to meet the challenges of safety, quality, cost and schedule.
There are simply no limits to what we can achieve. The video below gives you a sense of scale and pride that goes into a creation like this.
