This past week, a group of builders from the Czech Republic demonstrated a life-size full scale replica of the Star Wars X-Wing fighter made from Lego's in Times Square. This passionate group of 32 people created the X-Wing as part of a publicity campaign for several Star Wars media projects. But, it also shows how much can be done with this basic assembly block. Star Wars helped an entire generation imagine the future (even though it took place a Long Long Time Ago) and what can one day be accomplished in large scale engineering projects. And, Lego's have been the training tool for generations of engineers.
Another interesting part of this article is the growth of the Lego company over the years. This gives me great hope that a new generation of engineers will bring us the flying cars and food replicators we have all been waiting for. They also note that they have 250,000 AFOL (adult fans of Legos) within Lego's social community. As a bonus, you might enjoy this history of Lego's overview. It shows an amazing journey for the founder and inventor of Lego's.
