In today’s world when security is becoming a major concern for the enterprises, no wonder many enterprises have security policies which mandate the passwords to be greater than 8 characters. Till now this was restricted in TXSeries. But TXSeries V8.1 comes up with an exciting feature which supports greater than 8 characters for better compliance of security policies.
TXSeries long password feature allows you to specify passwords up to 100 characters now. Its very easy to use and all the PASSWORD APIs support this feature.
Longer passwords are considered to be more robust and secure. You can use long password feature using various APIs, transactions or EAM, ESM modules.
The 3 APIs that support long passwords are :
a) EXEC CICS SIGNON USERID(userid) NEWP
b) EXEC CICS CHANGE PASS
c) EXEC CICS VERIFY PASSWORD - Similar to above APIs, this API also allows uptill 100 characters in the PASSWORD field now.
If your applications are using any of these APIs, they will continue to work as is for passwords uptill 8 characters. But if you want to leverage the new feature of long passwords, then you will need to recompile your applications.
TXSeries V8.1 also introduces a new transaction called CESL (CICS SIGNON LONG) to support Sign on for longer password. CESL has remain unchanged. This is to ensure backward compatibility with existing applications that are using CESN. CESL is exactly same as CESN except that it allows upto 100 characters in password and newpassword fields.
Similarly, if you are using CTG clients or ESM, EAM for authentication and authorization, you can use the long password feature. So make full use of your Security products like LDAP, Active Directory Server, etc, and enjoy the security more than ever!
